An ‘abortion abolitionist’ became an Oklahoma senator. The fringe is celebrating its big victory
The hardline fragment of the anti-abortion movement is gaining traction in the wake of Roe v Wade’s fall

When Dusty Deevers won his race to become an Oklahoma state senator on Tuesday night, he wasted no time in making sure his new constituents knew what he stood for.
“Here in Oklahoma, it’s time to abolish abortion, abolish pornography, abolish the state income tax and give power and equal representation back to the people!” the Republican posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Deevers’ use of the term “abolish abortion” is no mere rhetorical flourish. On his campaign website, Deevers has identified himself as an “abortion abolitionist” – an adherent of a hardline, fringe segment of the anti-abortion movement that, in Oklahoma and elsewhere, is growing in the wake of the fall of Roe v Wade.

Anya Cook had a pre-term rupture of the membrane, which causes significant complications. “[The doctor] told me in that very moment that you can get an infection, possibly sepsis and die. The nurse asked if she could pray for me.”
According to Florida’s abortion ban, she wasn’t sick enough yet and was sent home. She ended up delivering her daughter, in a hair salon toilet. As she was rushed to the hospital, paramedics told her she was bleeding out.
In April of 2022 Florida passed a 15-week abortion ban. A year later, the ban was expanded to 6-weeks.

Pregnant Texas women find a little sliver of pay back: Tickets in the HOV Lane.
"Do you understand, with everything that's going on, this is a baby and she's 34 weeks," she told the deputies.
A judge agreed with her, and the June ticket was dismissed.

Voters in Ohio earlier this year overwhelmingly backed an amendment to enshrine abortion rights in their state's constitution, but Republicans in the state are plotting to thwart their wishes.
News 5 Cleveland reports that some Republicans in the Ohio state legislature are now going all-in on backing a total abortion ban that would only have exceptions to save a woman's life but not for women who were impregnated due to rape or incest.
At the center of the effort is anti-abortion advocate Austin Beigel, who is working with several anti-abortion Republicans on crafting the ban.
While talking with reporters, Beigel acknowledged that this bill would contradict the will of the voters but said that didn't matter because voters made an "immoral" choice last month.

I don’t know how that will play out, but I can’t imagine the Republicans who voted for abortion choices will be happy with their overlords.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/202 ... texas-bansTexas city is latest to debate ban on using roads to transport people seeking abortions
Amarillo considers ordinance that has become part of new anti-abortion tactic to undermine people’s ability to flee states
A string of Texas localities have passed controversial ordinances banning so-called “abortion trafficking” – and another city may soon join their number.
Over the last several weeks, the city of Amarillo, Texas, has become embroiled in a debate over whether to pass an ordinance to block people from using the city’s roads to transport pregnant people seeking abortions in other states. The city council will meet on Tuesday to debate the measure. It is not expected to vote.
This type of ordinance has sprung up as part of a new anti-abortion tactic to undermine people’s ability to flee states with abortion bans. Since the fall of Roe v Wade, abortion foes have scrambled to find a way to cut off what they see as “abortion trafficking”, even though many experts argue that the US constitution protects the right to interstate travel.
In October, Lubbock county became the largest Texas locality yet to enact an ordinance restricting people’s ability to travel for abortions. Idaho has also passed a separate law banning “abortion trafficking”, which would block people from taking minors across state lines for abortions without parental permission. A judge froze that law earlier this year.

Kinda curious as to how this law would not be struck down as violating the state constitution, accordingly. IANAL, but I thought that even at the state level, a constitutional amendment becomes pact and parcel of the actual constitution and trumps legislative statute. Or am I not grokking?AndyinPA wrote: ↑Tue Dec 19, 2023 1:45 pm https://www.rawstory.com/ohio-abortion-law-2666659920/

Maternal death rate in the US has risen 40% since the repeal of Roe...over 60% in states with abortion bans. The one lesson doG has not been able to teach conservatives...dead women can have no babies. Should have learned it about 700 years ago when the birth rate in Europe was terrible and maternal deaths were sky high. What changed? What led to the population explosion in Europe that led to Europeans practicing what Hannity calls replacement theory all over the world? Well, Europeans threw aside the conservative ideal that the only male that could see a woman's naked body was the husband, got rid of all the midwives, and allowed pregnant women to see doctors and get exams. So, quite frankly, doG has proven that if you want more babies, put the women first (like doG) and not last like conservatives are doing.John Thomas8 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 19, 2023 5:09 pm How many constitutional amendments does that proposed law violate?

The death rates remind me of something. This is a controversial theory, but I find it pretty interesting. It links abortion restrictions to crime rates, as in a bunch of unwanted babies twenty years later grow up to do bad things.

Let's not forget another negative from the 80's that conservatives used to complain about (but we decreased by almost 80%) and that was teenage pregnancy. Conservatives are going to create another generation or 2 of "Welfare Mommas" that they can complain about. Starting to rise again.raison de arizona wrote: ↑Tue Dec 19, 2023 5:37 pm The death rates remind me of something. This is a controversial theory, but I find it pretty interesting. It would be. The R majority Ohio Supreme Court recently dismissed the appeal by R Attorney General Dave Yost of a lawsuit that had blocked implementation of the state's 6-week abortion ban. The Court held that the suit had been mooted by the adoption of the amendment enshrining the right to abortion in the state constitution. The only way assholes like Beigel and his co-conspirators can ban abortion is with another constitutional amendment reversing the one just adopted in a landslide by Ohio voters.Ben-Prime wrote: ↑Tue Dec 19, 2023 5:18 pmKinda curious as to how this law would not be struck down as violating the state constitution, accordingly. For twenty-five years, the trusted family doctor in a small Wyoming town had been raping and molesting the women and children who most relied on him.Mostly Mormons, the naive victims sometimes realized on their wedding nights the truth about what had happened in Dr. Story's office. In riveting detail, veteran crime writer Jack Olsen tells the searing story of a small group of courageous women who decided to bring a doctor to justice -- and unearthed a legacy of pain and anger that would divide their families, their neighbors, and an entire town.

Ohio grand jury to decide whether to charge woman who miscarried for ‘abuse of a corpse’
Brittany Watts’s water broke prematurely and she miscarried at home; when she went to the hospital a nurse called the police
Carter Sherman
Tue 26 Dec 2023 13.00 CET
A grand jury is set to decide whether an Ohio woman who miscarried a nonviable fetus should face criminal consequences.
Brittany Watts, who was reportedly turned into the police after her September miscarriage, has been charged with the fifth-degree felony of “abuse of a corpse” in Trumbull county, Ohio. Her case has been held up as evidence of how easily pregnant people can find themselves in law enforcement’s crosshairs – especially since the overturning of Roe v Wade and amid tightening abortion restrictions in the US.
If convicted, Watts could spend up to a year behind bars.
In September, Watts showed up at an Ohio hospital with signs that her water had broken prematurely, according to CNN. That condition can make it impossible for a pregnancy to continue and, if left untreated, pregnant people in that condition can slip into deadly sepsis – which has happened in other states post-Roe.
Watts was 21 weeks and five days into her pregnancy, CNN reported. At the time, Ohio law banned abortion past 22 weeks of pregnancy. That law has since changed: thanks to a November referendum, Ohio now permits the procedure until viability, a benchmark that generally occurs at about 24 weeks of pregnancy. Still, the Washington Post reported that staffers at the hospital spent hours debating how to proceed with Watts’s case.
Watts left the hospital against medical advice because, she told the doctor, she could “better process what was happening to her at home”, according to the Post. She returned the next day, but left again.
Watts ended up miscarrying the fetus at home, into the toilet, which became clogged with blood, tissue and stool, according to the Washington Post. Watts thought that she removed the mass clogging the toilet and “placed it outdoors”, in the words of the outlet.
Afterward, she went to the hospital – where a nurse reported her to the police, Watts told the Washington Post.
