There's an upgrade. Moving from version 3.2.8 to 3.2.9.

Unfortunately, I hadn't backed up all the files for a few weeks, what with the holidays, visiting my dad, and so forth. Of course, a new version means changes to the files, and I have to have a complete backup in case anything goes pear-shaped. I make backups of the database every week, but backups of the files is equally important.

And there are nearly 40,000 files, because of all the uploaded graphics, pdf files, etc.

So it took more than an hour to back up the files.

Which was the smartest thing I ever did, because when I had it all backed up and ready to upgrade, the consarn frickin' frackin' software told me that my installation of PHP also needs to be upgraded before I install the latest upgrade of phpBB.

And that takes time, so I restored all the files I backed up, optimized and backed up the database, and restored the board to where it was this morning at 6 a.m. Eastern, with no upgrade.

But at least the board works. I'll get in touch with my hosting company today about upgrading my PHP installation, and then maybe tomorrow we'll get to upgrade to the latest version of phpBB.

As Twitler said this week, ALL IS WELL. And I'm not even trying to start WWIII.

For further information, see my signature.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

I did notice we were offline still when I first checked this morning, but I just assumed some upgrade/update was taking longer or something.

In that situation, the most important thing is not to panic. Because people who panic make mistakes.

This was not a mistake by me, because they didn't tell me in advance that before I can upgrade the forum, I have to upgrade my PHP installation. They didn't tell me that until I was well into the process.

Of course, I knew we were offline for a long time, but it's better to be offline for 2 hours and return to a working forum than to feel pressured and panic and really break the damn thing. But I didn't panic, and I did exactly what I needed to do, step by step, to get us back to where we were at 6 a.m. It just took me 2 hours to get back to where we were.

By the way, I did notify anyone who knows about our Facebook page. Whenever we're offline for any extended period, I will post on the Facebook page with an explanation. Here's the link:

Bookmark that, por favor. It may come in handy when WWIII starts.

I noticed, yes I noticed. The board is nice and brisk now. Maybe it's just my new computer build and lightening fast connection. So how any features are we missing now?

ZERO.

We are exactly the same as yesterday and the day before. When I get my PHP installation upgraded to the latest version, then I will upgrade the phpBB software to the latest version. Then maybe we'll have something new and improved. But for now, no change and nothing missing.

I took my pot last night so I slept through the overhaul. I have no idea how this works. I just turn the key and it goes.

It was egg-zaktly High Noon when I wanted to pull my regular dosis of Fogbow in. Like last week, no chance on a Sunday :-D I am seriously planning of changing the time zone in my account to trick the Rooster crowing when I am not reading ;)

I appreciate the work, but it will never inconvenience me at 5 AM on any morning. I don’t attend early mornings.
