nextdoor - where you find out your neighbors are morons

There's been a post or nineteen mentioning nextdoor and run-ins there, so here is a thread to complain about the people in your neighborhood. Here is mine.
TAZ JP • Surprise, AZ wrote: Just keep this in mind. Part of the Dem strategy is to keep the nation in perpetual fear and psychosis and to use Covid to take down a president and exert control over free citizens. The main reason so many people are disgusted with the current administration is they lie as a strategy and simply do not have the ability to solve real problems.
People complained about Trump's tweets and large ego, but I ask one simple question. When you are trying to solve real problems that affect the nation do you care what the person tweets or what they can do? President Trump achieved several significant accomplishments that former administrations only pandered to. Moving the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, reforming prison sentencing, securing our southern borders, balancing trade, energy independence, lower unemployment with opportunities for anyone willing to work, and then Covid! How timely to use Covid as a political weapon against citizens of the United States!
I simply don't care what the man tweets, I care about my country and the power hungry swamp doing everything it can to rob me of my God given freedom and the opportunities provided in the best country on earth. Does anyone really believe we would be where we are right now, today, if Donald J. Trump had remained in office??
And it's got HEARTs and FINGER POINTERs and EVERYTHING! Arg!

Well, I agree with the final sentence at least. We'd be a hell of a lot worse off, that's for sure.

But really. "Part of the Dem strategy is to keep the nation in perpetual fear and psychosis" - seriously? It makes me physically ill that my neighbors believe this. Universal healthcare keeps people in perpetual fear and psychosis? Dafuq? The whole strategy is laid out in the Democratic Party Platform, which is readily available for anyone that wants to read it. Their evil playbook is being run even as we speak. :eyeroll: Contrast that with the Republican Party Platform! Oh wait, there isn't one. They haven't bothered to have one in recent years because their platform is whatever tfg says.

And the rest. I just can't. nextdoor taxes my mind.

I think I'm lucky. Politics occasionally creeps on to my Next Door, but frequently gets shut down. Also, you can block anyone you don't want to see. But I don't doubt it could be a big problem in a lot of places.

I just can't even. This was a post from someone who tested positive for Covid seeking treatment advice. Every other post advocated ivermectin. Unfortunately, moderation is handled by people in your local neighborhood, who in my case included an awful lot of Trumpers.

I downloaded it thinking I could get help with practical questions and quickly realized it’s a cesspool. I think responsible adults are too busy, leaving the constant posting and liking to the cult.

Ohh fancy. They typed it up, no spelling mistakes, and even dosage instructions for prescription medications. Very doctory. We know whose neighborhood sewers are going to get a workout.

They typed it, printed it, and took a photo of it, then told you took to take a screen shot. Vs. just, you know, typing it online or even in a notes app. And you should trust their medical advice. Don't you?

Publishing this as a screen shot might be an attempt to get around text filters that are scanning for COVID misinformation. I don't know how good Nextdoor's is, but a lot of larger sites, especially Google and Facebook, have good OCR algorithms that probably automatically scan each photograph uploaded for a bunch of stuff including text that violates policy. They probably also scan for other stuff like porn, kiddie porn, and other stuff. So uploading a picture of text instead of entering text itself may not be all that effective.

The recommendation to take another screenshot may be an attempt to get around "signature" (a.k.a. "digest") algorithms that can quickly check to see if a forbidden image has been uploaded. A mathematical algorithm takes a file and generates a very large number (256 bits, often). If two files have the same signature, they're identical. So any storage system is going to generate a signature for an image or video to see if it already exists, to eliminate the need to store a duplicate copy of the file and eat up tons of disk space. It's trivial to add a check to a signature check to see if that file is already banned. However, it's not hard to do another OCR check on a new image if they change the image a little bit, as would happen by taking a screen shot of a screen shot, so the usefulness of these techniques to confuse the censors is not all that high.

Protip: the computer science geeks at Google, Facebook and Amazon are way, way smarter than you are. A lot of image recognition toolkits are cheap and easily integrated into web sites, so this sort of thing will get harder all the time.

I've seen that before. You're right — Meta, Google, Amazon, et. al. are way smarter than they are. But then so's my cat.

I've used Nextdoor to find screen repair and tree trimmers but, yeah, cellpool it is. I haven't bothered recently but I know, two years ago, when people were pushing hydroxychloroquine, I objected and got my ass kicked by....pretty much everyone. There were a few "likes," but no comments in favor of sanity. I then turned the thread in for pushing covid misinfo and the moderators did take it down.

Yep. And if you had followed so many GOP reps example, you would have purchased a ton of Pfizer stock and been comfortably wealthy today.

It's distressing to see how many folks - neighbors - buy this malarky. Must be something in the water (or the sewer).

As you know, I consider this topic to be up there on the top tier of important problems that have brought about the fall of democracy. And how this topic is IGNORED by main stream media, which continues to report as if the playing field of information was level. Ran across this yesterday, and it spoke to me:

Same here. For me it's number one with a bullet. I truly don't think there is anything more important in tearing down our society first, and now tearing down democracy itself, than rwnj media. I am disgusted by it and disgusted by "normal" media's failure to have started pointing it out much earlier. Some of the CNN anchors are on it and talk about it quite a bit, but it's way too late.

Oh Nextdoor is being in hell. One of the communities I own a townhouse in had a fairly vibrant Nextdoor going, until one of the members started bitching about everything. Her real name is actually "Karen" ... The last straw was her complaining that a teenage resident who posted photos from his new drone (we were all proud of him) --she thought maybe he was peeping in her windows.

That was two years ago. Now all that gets posted is HOA approved crap... no community discussions.
