Minnesota 5th CD 2018: Primary August 14

Associated Press
As Ellison departs Congress, Omar chases another first ...

Rep. Keith Ellison's decision to leave Congress to run for attorney general back home in Minnesota set off a scramble for his congressional seat, which has been a Democratic lock for more than half a century. It's a race with echoes of the recent primary upset in New York, in which Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old self-described democratic socialist, defeated one of the most powerful House Democrats.

Though the Minnesota race has no incumbent, Omar is hoping to harness the energy that Ocasio-Cortez tapped to defeat five other candidates in the Aug. 14 primary, including the state's first Latina lawmaker, state Sen. Patricia Torres Ray, and Margaret Anderson Kelliher, a former state House speaker who spent a decade as a powerbroker in Minnesota politics.

Omar broke into elected office by unseating a 22-term Democratic incumbent in 2016 while en route to becoming the nation's first Somali-American state lawmaker. With one term under her belt in the Minnesota House, she's touting her background — "I myself would have been part of the travel ban," she says — to persuade voters that for her, the fight against President Donald Trump would be personal. ...

The Minneapolis area has been trending more liberal since long before Trump, said Brian Melendez, a former chairman of the state's Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. He noted Ellison's 2006 victory to become the first Muslim elected to Congress, as well as a raft of very liberal candidates who have won city offices and Omar's 2016 primary victory.

Like many other Democratic primaries around the country, the race for Ellison's House seat is testing what kind of political experience matters most for Democratic voters who hope to rein in the Trump administration, which has emerged as the central focus in the race.

Just read Ellison's bio on Wikipedia. A good man. But please can someone explain to me, coming from very unreligious countries, why Ellison converted from being Catholic to a follower of Islam in his late teens and is still there?

Speaking of Ellison, his August Surprise hit today, with an ex-girlfriend and her son claiming Ellison had assaulted her during their relationship. She claims she has video of the encounter. However, she is refusing to release the video. I'm not a fan of Ellison, but her refusal to prove her allegation by releasing the video, plus the timing of the charge, smells like bullshit to me.

To drag this back on topic:

Former Project Veritas staffer crashes Ilhan Omar campaign event in Minneapolis
A campaign event for state Rep. Ilhan Omar was disrupted Saturday night when Laura Loomer, an alt-right provocateur with a history of attacking Muslims on social media, confronted Omar and Michigan congressional candidate Rashida Tlaib.

Loomer was part of a group that confronted Omar and Tlaib at the event at Holy Land deli in Minneapolis. In an interview late Saturday, Loomer, who previously worked for Project Veritas, said she has been traveling the country investigating Muslim candidates for office, including in Minnesota. She declined to say how many people were with her.

Omar could not be reached for comment late Saturday. Rep. Ray Dehn, DFL-Minneapolis, who attended the event, said Loomer and a few other men and women interrupted Tlaib and Omar as they spoke at Holy Land.

“Unfortunately, [Omar and Tlaib] weren’t able to speak a lot because they kept getting interrupted,” he said. “I’ve seen way too much of this, and it’s really getting sickening.”

As the group shouted questions about Hamas and female genital mutilation, Dehn said, the crowd of supporters began to chant “Time for Ilhan.”

FiveThirtyEight: Polls close: 9 p.m. Eastern

The 5th District is also open (outgoing Rep. Keith Ellison’s own primary for attorney general has drawn headlines), but with a D+52 partisan lean, it should be a safe hold for the DFL. State Rep. Ilhan Omar, the first Somali-American legislator elected anywhere in the country, is now seeking to be among the first Muslim women in the U.S. Congress. She’s running in the DFL primary against state Sen. Patricia Torres Ray, who was the first Latina in the Minnesota Senate, and former state House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher, one of the most powerful women in Minnesota political history. The three candidates all say they would abolish ICE, implement single-payer health care and probably even impeach Trump.

Ahead of swearing-in Dem lands at same airport where she arrived as a refugee

On the eve of her swearing-in as a member of Congress, incoming Rep.-elect Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) posted a picture on Twitter reminiscing on her experience entering America as a refugee.

Omar posted a picture Wednesday of herself and her father in a Washington, D.C.-area airport.
<snip - see tweet below>

Omar came to the U.S. at the age of 12 as a Somali refugee cast out of her country by a civil war in her home country. She spent time at a refugee camp in Kenya before coming to America with her father.

Omar’s swearing-in Thursday will be a historic occasion. She will be the first Somali-American and one of the first Muslim woman in Congress.

23 years ago, from a refugee camp in Kenya, my father and I arrived at an airport in Washington DC.

Today, we return to that same airport on the eve of my swearing in as the first Somali-American in Congress. #Hope #Ilhan 🙏🏾

In a 2012 tweet, Minnesota State Representative Ilhan Omar accused Israel of “evil doings” as the Israeli military carried out an aerial campaign meant to halt rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip by Hamas and other terror groups.

“Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel,” she wrote at the time.
