Iceland volcano erupts weeks after earthquakes shake southwest coast

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/ic ... r-AA1lHoIk
"An eruption has started north of Grindavík," the Icelandic Met Office said in an alert on its website. "It can be seen on webcams and seems to be located close to Hagafell, about 3 km [about 1.8 miles] north of Grindavík."

An "earthquake swarm" started around 9 p.m. local time and the eruption began at 10:17 p.m., the office said.

Iceland's Meteorological Office confirmed early Tuesday morning local time that the eruption was located on "the dyke intrusion that formed in November." The eruption fissure, as the Met Office called it, began expanding southward, with the southern end of it near Sundhnúkur.

Iceland's Meteorological Office confirmed early Tuesday morning local time that the eruption was located on "the dyke intrusion that formed in November." The eruption fissure, as the Met Office called it, began expanding southward, with the southern end of it near Sundhnúkur.

It estimated the lava discharge from the fissure to be "hundreds of cubic metres per second," adding that the biggest lava fountains were on the northern end. The lava was spreading laterally, the office said.

Seismic activity had slowed after midnight on Dec. 19, according to the office.

I like this geologist's YouTube channel. Here is his commentary on what is going on in Iceland.

Gansu earthquake: Over 120 killed in China's deadliest quake in years

By Frances Mao & Christy Cooney BBC News

At least 127 people have been killed in north-west China in the country's deadliest earthquake for years.

The 6.2 magnitude quake hit mountainous Gansu province around midnight on Monday (16:00 GMT), also shaking neighbouring Qinghai.

Fatalities may rise, with more than 700 reported injured in icy conditions.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered thousands of rescue crew to the region, among the poorest and most diverse in China.

The earthquake is the country's deadliest since 2014, when more than 600 people were killed by a quake in south-western Yunnan province.

On Tuesday, footage shown on state TV and social media networks showed entire villages split by the quake, as well as collapsed buildings and houses.

Residents who fled their homes were also shown huddling over makeshift fires at hastily erected evacuation camps. Temperatures hit -13C (8.7F) on Tuesday, Chinese media reported.

Survivors said the tremors had felt like "being tossed by surging waves" and recalled rushing out of their apartments.

Iceland downgrades volcano threat level as activity appears to end
Officials say no visible movement at site near Grindavík but it is possible lava may still be flowing underneath

Staff and agencies in Reykjavik
Fri 22 Dec 2023 17.49 CET

Authorities in Iceland have downgraded the threat level from the volcano that erupted earlier this week, as officials said they could no longer observe volcanic activity at the site of the eruption.

The eruption on Monday opened a fissure in the ground about 2.5 miles (4km) long, spewing orange lava into the sky only 2 miles from the town of Grindavík.

“Volcanic activity seems to have come to an end late yesterday night or early that morning,” the Icelandic meteorological office (IMO) said on Friday, adding no activity had been visible during surveillance flights.

“Despite that, it is possible that lava is flowing underneath ... and therefore it is not possible to say that the eruption is over,” it said.

Authorities also lowered their alert level. The state of emergency, declared on Monday evening, was downgraded by a level.

On Thursday, authorities began allowing the 4,000 residents of the evacuated town access to the small fishing port between 7am and 4pm. But authorities said it was still not safe for overnight stays and first responders were present in the town in case an emergency evacuation was required.

Residents of Iceland village near volcano that erupted are allowed to return home

BY MARCO DIMARCO
Updated 8:41 PM CET, December 22, 2023

GRINDAVIK, Iceland (AP) — Residents of the small Icelandic fishing village near where a volcano erupted were told Friday they could return home.

The regional police chief said residents, business owners and employees could enter Grindavik beginning Saturday and could stay overnight.

The town of 3,800 near Iceland’s main airport was evacuated Nov. 10 when a strong swarm of earthquakes led to cracks and openings in the earth between the town and Sýlingarfell, a small mountain to the north. The volcano finally erupted Monday, spewing semi-molten rock in a spectacular show that lit up the night sky.

Japan issues tsunami warnings for west coast after 7.6-magnitude earthquake
Japan Meteorological Agency warnings apply to Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama prefectures

A powerful earthquake has struck central Japan’s western coastline, prompting tsunami alerts and warnings for residents to evacuate.

The quake, which hit at 4.10pm local time and is estimated to have been magnitude 7.6, knocked out power to tens of thousands of homes and disrupted flights and rail services. In Wajima city on the Noto peninsula, close to the epicentre, at least six people are reported to have been inside houses that collapsed.

Waves of up to 3 metres (10ft) were reported along stretches of the Sea of Japan coast. The Japanese public broadcaster NHK said waves could reach as high as 5 metres.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued tsunami warnings for the prefectures of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama, as well as less serious tsunami advisories for as far north as the island of Hokkaido and as far south as the island of Kyushu.

More than 40 earthquakes of at least magnitude 3.5 struck between 4pm and 7.30pm.

A large fire in Wajima appears to have destroyed at least half a dozen houses. There are no reports of fatalities or injuries from the fire so far.

Local hospitals have reported multiple injured people arriving for treatment, though damaged roads are hampering the transport of patients.

Authorities were still assessing the extent of the damage and residents needed to prepare for any more tremors, the Japanese prime minister, Fumio Kishida, said in comments broadcast on NHK.

“Residents need to stay on alert for further possible quakes and I urge people in areas where tsunamis are expected to evacuate as soon as possible,” he said. Buildings shook 190 miles (300km) away in Tokyo.

Ah...I remember when it was just a State part pre-eruption, the last place I went camping with my parents before I turned 18 and moved out.
Stunning park, absolutely beautiful. If you're on FB and want to see photos and more, check out https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063736174852

We've been there twice since the eruption, the late 90s and then again about 15 years later. It was amazing what a difference there was over that period of time.
