I wonder, what made this threat credible?

Where is Steel Valley?

And we probably don't need new threads until it's actually confirmed as an incident. 7 schools were on lockdown in 3 days down here for "credible threats" that turned out to be nothing.

As you will not be too surprised to learn Steel Valley is in western Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh.

Defender: Student accused of HCC threat is mentally ill https://trib.al/WvninKp

8:28 AM - May 11, 2018
A Harris County public defender asked a judge Friday to set a low bail amount for the HCC student accused of making shooting threats against the midtown campus because of a mental disability.

Luis Rivera, 21, is accused of using a fake name to make an online threat about causing casualties at the central campus of Houston Community College on Monday. HCC shut down the campus on Monday and Tuesday while the threat was investigated and located a “person of interest” on Wednesday. Rivera was charged Thursday.

A judge in Harris County’s Probable Cause Court set Rivera’s bond at $20,000, higher than the public defender’s requested $2,500. Rivera has been diagnosed as autistic, which should be taken into consideration while setting bond, the defender argued.

So we are now claiming that yet another individual characteristic, autism, is a mental illness?

Reports of gunshots in area prompt Phillips Avenue school lockout; teen shot in foot seeks treatment, police say
https://riverheadlocal.com/2018/05/09/r ... l-lockout/
(Updated 3:15 p.m.) Gunshots in the area of Brown Street and Goodrich Avenue in Riverside were reported by multiple people this morning at about 9:40 a.m., Southampton Town Police said in a press release.

Patrol units responded to the area and conducted a search but located no victims, police said. However, a short time later police were called to Peconic Bay Medical Center for a report of a victim with a superficial gunshot wound, according to the press release. Police later confirmed that a 16-year-old victim was shot in the foot.

The Southampton Town Police detective division responded to the hospital and an investigation is currently underway, police said.

Phillips Avenue Elementary School went into lockout and a Southampton Town Police School Resource Officer responded and remained at the school as a safety precaution, police said.
Riverside is south of the Peconic River in the Town of Southampton. Our Town of Riverhead is north of the river.

My Sprout who, you may remember, has generalized anxiety disorder, recently confessed to me one of his 'real' reasons for being afraid of school, other than bullies he's encountered: Shortly after he started our local public high school a young man he was starting to befriend was killed in a drive by. Not at school, near the skate park as he walked home. Random.

But in the weeks after there was a large uptick in muttered threats, not so muted threats and general macho posturing among the friends of this kid. They were talking retaliation and acting like they knew who shot him.

Our town, more than 30 years ago, had a big gang problem. The then-mayor Bob Bartlett was a miracle worker. Over the course of about 10 years the gang problems dropped waaay down due to his 'summits' where all the stakeholders got to express their sides. The violence dropped, more each year, and until most newer residents had no idea there had even been a problem. It's been pretty quiet.

Along with the summits came downtown/old town revitalization, which lifted everyone's boats. A movie theater, tons of locally-owned restaurants. So, naturally, housing prices Have gone up, the Metro stop was built, and the last year or so have seen a backlash against gentrification. And guess who's back?

The gangs are ramping up again and the high school in our leafy suburb is too scary for my already-anxious son to go.

I just called my 3 NRA funded Congressional "representatives" and told them I lay these deaths at their feet.

Sadly the NRA has also infiltrated the Democratic Party. These deaths are the responsibility of gutless politicians whose only desire is to be re-elected.

I realize that school shootings remain relatively rare.

This hits home. :madguy: Mrs. V. is retired but both of our daughters are public school teachers. We have 2 nieces and a nephew who are teachers. We know a lot of teachers.

I spent my working life at a defense contractor and at a major multinational petrochemical company. The security at all of those companies' sites was tight and multilayered. (It was so tight that sometimes it was hard to get things done. ;))

I would hate to see our schools have to adopt that type of security but with so many guns floating around perhaps it will be necessary for them to do so. :(

Weird that the Santa Fe ISD police department is the lead in this case. Supposedly explosive devices found around the high school. The SFISD spokesman can barely speak English. Thoughts and prayers from the Chief.
