It is the height of the summer season so it is not good that this weekend may be a washout. :(
Saturday
A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Cloudy, with a high near 80. Light and variable wind becoming southeast around 6 mph in the morning.

Saturday Night
Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Cloudy, with a low around 69. East wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Sunday
Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Cloudy, with a high near 79. East wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
Due to the forecast-

The threat of rain Saturday morning has led to the annual Cardboard Boat Race to be postponed until Sunday, Aug. 26, according to Riverhead Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith.
This is the 2nd postponement this year. Since the race was scheduled to begin at 9AM tomorrow most competitors will have already finished building their boats. There are usually about 100 competitors and over 1000 spectators. The highlight of the event is the NoFo/SoFo grudge match between the Town Supervisors of Southampton and Riverhead. The Peconic River, where the race is held, is the boundary between the two towns.

In the summer down here, we just assume the % chance of rain actually means the % of the day it will rain. It's 20%ing pretty good out there right now.

After about a hour's lull we have rain again. :?

It was a good call to postpone the cardboard boat races which would be starting now.

The upside? No lawnmowers! A Saturday w/o lawnmowers. :-D

Have moved out to the porch to watch the rain.

A heavier band of rain is now over Nassau County. It is headed this way.

I can hear that there is almost no traffic on Main Rd. So far no helicopters. People don't love the East End very much when it is raining. :(

It was Taco Tuesday at Aquebogue's best (only) Mexican restaurant.

To heck with Trump. Here is some important news.

New grant funding will support new programming at historic Jamesport Meeting House

https://riverheadlocal.com/2018/08/21/n ... ing-house/
“Board members are thrilled by the generous support of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation,” Wines said. “This will allow us to extend our programming in ways that would not be possible without this assistance.”

Last year, the foundation provided grant funding for the installation of an air-conditioning system and the rehabilitation of the century-old kitchen.

“It is important not only to preserve significant historic structures like the Meeting House, but also to support creative programs that will engage the public. In this way our historic buildings come to life by using them to host innovative and original community outreach,” said Kathryn Curran, executive director of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation.

:snippity:

The Jamesport Meeting House, built in 1731, is the most significant historic structure in the Town of Riverhead. It is not only the oldest building in Riverhead, but is also the oldest public building on the East End of Long Island. The Meeting House is a Riverhead Town landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since 2008 when a group of local residents came together and arranged financing to buy the building, it has become a vital not-for-profit venue for a broad range of events: classical concerts, Broadway performances, bluegrass, folk music, Shakespeare, civic association meetings, lectures, community spelling bees and weddings.

The taco looks delicious, but the decor is a mix of Pepto-Bismol, Hello Kitty, and an ice cream shop.

North Forkers awake to sad news.

Riverhead Kmart will close in November, company announces

https://patch.com/new-york/northfork/s/ ... aign=alert

http://riverheadnewsreview.timesreview. ... announces/

https://riverheadlocal.com/2018/08/22/r ... -november/
“As part of our ongoing efforts to streamline Sears Holdings’ operations, strengthen our capital position and focus on our best stores, this week the company informed associates at 46 unprofitable stores that we will be closing these stores in November 2018,” the statement read. It continued to state that “eligible employees will receive severance” and be given the opportunity to apply for employment at other Sears and Kmart locations.
The Kmart space becomes the latest large retailer casualty along Route 58, where Sports Authority, Waldbaum’s and Toys R Us have closed. ShopRite is opening in the former Waldbaum’s location, but Sports Authority and Toys R Us remain vacant — as does the space formerly occupied by Walmart, which moved to a newly constructed building on the western end of the highway.
We hope that the BJ's located next to the Kmart will remain open.

We have gone east to Greenport and west to Calverton and north to Northville.

Today we go south to South Jamesport, the mysterious hamlet south of Peconic Bay Blvd. ;) What will we find there?

Just south of Villa Volkonski in the center of the Circle-

Image

The southern access road to the Circle.

Image

Suburban style houses on the site of the Epworth League Fresh Air Camp.

Image

Someone has a pet peeve. ;)

Image

Campgrounds children are dangerous but we give people fair warning. :)

Image

6th Street, the way to South Jamesport Ave.

Image

The town is behind on its mowing.

Image

Freshly painted SJ Ave leads south to the bay.

Image

According to the US Postal Service, Bay Area Blvd is the boundary between Jamesport and South Jamesport.

Image

Now we enter South Jamesport, once the playground of Brooklyn's political and social elite.

Image

Long, straight flat roads encourage some folks to speed. :(

They eat eggs in South jamesport.

Image

This little bar survives from the time of the great hotels.

Image

This house, in a prime location, has remained closed up for years.

Image

This stately home, Wisteria Court, was built in the late 1800's by a man who married the daughter of the owner of the Great Peconic Bay House Hotel which was located 2 blocks to the south.

Image

Brooklyn's elite could not be bothered to go up to Main Road for their mail. They had the clout to get this little post office on 2nd Street.

Image

The last surviving hotel from Jamesport's glory years.

Image

Time for a beer?

Yes.

Image

The restaurant in this hotel reinvented itself over the winter as a high-end steak house. I had not tried it since.

The lunch menu was pricey.

Image

The house special drinks are weird.

Image

Charles Foster Kane Crush? Really?

This was my $17 burger platter-

Image

Two There's Something about Bloody Marys prepared for a other couple eating there.

Image

I do not think the new restaurant format is working. Last year this place was usually quite busy on a sunny weekday lunchtime. Today at height of the summer season at about 12:45 PM there were two couples dining on the front porch. I had the bar to myself. There were no diners inside the main restaurant.

Continuing south-

To the right is the location of the Miamogue Hotel, the first large luxury hotel in the hamlet.

Image

This "pocket park" includes most of the site of the Great Peconic Bay House Hotel, the largest and fanciest of the hotels.

Image

This 1950's era motel is on the site of the old Locust Grove Hotel. It was The Motel on the Bay for decades. New owners have gone upscale. It is now the Jamesport Suites.

Image

The last undeveloped beachfront parcel is now under contract. :(

Image

A surviving step that once led to the Great Peconic Bay House.

Image

Miamogue Point. The southernmost part of the hamlet. The three sticks in the sand are what is left of the Great Peconic Bay House's bulkhead.

Image

A rich man being a jerk. After building his beachfront McMansion this guy tried to keep people off the beach including the part below the mean high water mark that he didn't own. The town stopped him but I see this year he has put up a new fence down to what he claims is the mean high water mark.

Image

The site of the old scallop houses. The narrow cottages with peaked roofs are original scallop houses that have been converted to vacation homes.

Image

That rich guy I mentioned before and his neighbor tried to take this access way to the beach private. The town attorney proved that the town owned all the way to the bay. If you zoom in you will see the sign declaring this a public right of way and forbidding parking there.

Hate Graffiti Over Politics Near 'Top Chef' Tom Colicchio's Home
MATTITUCK, NY — Hate graffiti was found outside the North Fork home of famed celebrity chef Tom Colicchio Tuesday.

According to "Top Chef" judge Colicchio, who posted on Twitter, red graffiti that read "Trump" was found on the mailbox and on the grass and street in Mattituck were painted the words, "Cuomo = Death to America."

"This was in response" to his Perry Gershon political campaign yard sign, he said. Also found was his wife's name, a cross and a Jewish star, he said.

Gershon, a Democrat, is facing off against Rep. Lee Zeldin, a Republican for his congressional seat.
