Prove it’: DeSantis claim teachers are ‘instructed’ to tell young kids they may be transgender sparks massive outrage

David Badash, The New Civil Rights Movement
July 28, 2022

Florida GOP Governor Ron DeSantis, continuing his months-long, fear-based attack on the LGBTQ community, appears to be claiming that elementary school teachers are "instructed" to tell children they they might be transgender, and insisting if anyone dares to disagree with him, they are "lying."

His claim, which appears in a clip posted by The Recount, is drawing massive outrage on social media.

"This will be for elementary school kids, where they're instructed to tell them, 'You may have been born a boy, that may have been what you said, but maybe you're really a girl.' That's wrong. That has no place in school – so that is happening in our country. Anyone that tells you it's not happening is lying to you," DeSantis, talking very fast, says in the video.

"So I think what we did in Florida was very important, we laid down a marker to make sure that that's not something that gained a foothold here, in the state of Florida, and our kids are able to be kids."

DeSantis' claim that "that is happening in our country" has drawn demands he "prove" his claims. The nation wide focus of his claim lines up with DeSantis' expected run for President.

Well, this is an unfortunate turn of events. Does this count as micro-management? Also, so a doctor that doesn't believe in abortion doesn't have to give one, a baker that doesn't believe in gay marriage doesn't have to bake a gay wedding cake, but an attorney that doesn't believe in restricting abortion rights or trans rights still has to prosecute them? Neat trick!

First - DeSantis can eat shit and die.

Second, (3rd, 4th.....) - What happens to the people of Hillsborough County? Since the prosecutor was elected, can DeSantis replace him? Does the position stay empty? Is there a deputy who covers for him? Is the guy still collecting his paycheck?

That's a blue area so I bet they're pretty damn pissed.

So, is Warren locked out of his office, or all this heading to court for review? Or both at the moment?

He's locked out. He was allowed to gather personal belongings, under surveillance, and escorted off the property.

DeSantis is Dictator of Florida. He's everything trump wishes he could be.

Why did the prosecutor speak out about his position on this? He could have decided each on a case by case basis as he does anyway. :confuzzled: Does he plan to run for judge or governor?

If I understand correctly, he was one of several who signed a letter saying they wouldn't prosecute anyone involved in obtaining an abortion past 15 weeks. So it was hypothetical. DeSantis hasn't yet signed the inevitable forced birth law we all know is coming. My question is, is the bastard brave enough to sign it before election day in November or does he hem and haw around then sign it the day after he's reelected?

My mistake - he signed it in April and it went into effect last month. I don't know how i missed that, other than any news involving DeSantis tends to rage me so I avoid it.

I'm trying to find out when the next Hillborough County prosecutor election is but when I type the keywords in, all I get are stories about the suspension. I was hoping it would be this year and the people reelect the suspended fellow.

It appears Warren was elected in 2016 and 2020.

Warren can fight this in court, the Florida Senate, or both.

One is (mostly) legal, one is political. I suspect Warren will lose in either.

Why? Does DeSantis really have the ability to remove elected officials?

Per the explainer, the governor can remove (for certain reasons) elected officials who aren't subject to impeachment. Such as local prosecutors.

The checks against the governor's powers are a hearing in the Florida Senate. That'll go nowhere.

And the courts. But Warren catagorically said no prosecuting for abortions before 15 weeks. The courts likely will defer to the governor's conclusion that's an abandonment of duty.

Warren was engaging in a form of civil disobedience. Suffering the consequences for doing so was foreseeable, perhaps intentional.

State fires attorney probing former Gov. Phil Bryant in welfare scandal lawsuit
Brad Pigott, who was zoning in on high-profile welfare scandal players who have so far escaped legal scrutiny, says his firing was politically motivated. It is unclear whether the termination could weaken or end the state’s ongoing civil lawsuit.
