Since you seem to maybe know something about ships... do you know what they called the "gunwale" of a ship before guns were invented? I ask because I read books that are often set in pre-gun times, yet the author will talk about people climbing in over the gunwales or the cargo being stacked as high as the gunwale, and it always stands out to me as really weird, especially after I looked up "gunwale" and found the definition said its the top of the side of the ship, "where guns would be mounted."

Any ideas? Thanks!

A gunwale is the upper edge of a boat's hull, where it meets the deck*. The word comes for Old Norse gunnr, meaning "shield", and originally referred to the top plank (wale) of a ship's side.
(noting an alternative is the Old Norse gundr which means "War" - I prefer gunnr as the source as the upper plank(wale) shielded the rowers from the sea as well as being somewhere handy to hang your shields)

Thank you! That's actually kind of funny because most of the books I'm reading are set in the Viking Era, so for it to come from Old Norse is rather appropriate
