TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday tapped former state education commissioner Richard Corcoran to serve on the state university system’s Board of Governors.
The Board of Governors oversees Florida’s 12 state universities and is tasked with such responsibilities as adopting regulations designed to carry out state laws related to higher education.
Corcoran, a former Republican House speaker, served three years as the state’s top education official overseeing Florida’s public-school and college systems. During his time at the helm of the state education department, Corcoran was a close ally of DeSantis on contentious issues such as efforts to prevent school districts from enacting mask requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic and to bar critical race theory from public-school curriculums.
Corcoran also was a key figure in the state’s decision to reopen schools in the early days of the pandemic, which DeSantis for the past two years has touted as a major political victory.

Desantis will veto the bill to fund the Tampa Rays new Spring Training facility because of their recent statements about gun violence following the Buffalo and Uvalde mass shootings.
The statement that reportedly caused Desantis to punish the Rays.
Desantis was asked if his veto of funding for Tampa Rays facility was because of their stance on gun violence: “Companies are free to engage or not engage in whatever political discourse they want .. (But) it is inappropriate to subsidize political activism of a private company.”
Why are they holding this in Florida, anyway? It's obvious they are not wanted.TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Special Olympics reversed its Covid-19 vaccine mandate for upcoming competitions in Orlando after Florida threatened event organizers with a $27.5 million fine over the requirement.
The Special Olympics issued a statement on Friday saying it will lift its mandate as directed by state officials on May 27 “based upon the Florida Department of Health’s interpretation of Florida law.”
This year’s Special Olympics USA Games are set to kick off Sunday and will wrap up on June 12. The event is expected to attract 4,000 athletes.
The Florida Department of Health sent a letter to Special Olympics International threatening the $27.5 million fine on Thursday. A copy of the letter, first reported on Twitter by ABC News, states that the Special Olympics had asked 5,500 people to provide proof of vaccination in order to gain access into the 2022 USA Special Olympics Games, which violates a state ban on requiring proof of vaccination.![]()
Yep. I don't think they realize that the type of people who support them are not the type of people who will support this decision. Really bad choice.raison de arizona wrote: ↑Fri Jun 03, 2022 4:18 pm Huh. Guess they don't care about the health of their athletes. Also, they made DeSantis the Co-Chair of the 2022 Special Olympics. Not an organization to support.
