I'm sure that he honestly (if that word can be used in conjunction with Donald Trump) believes that the documents were his to take. After all, he was the President! I think he may have refused to return them because that would be admitting that he did not have the right/authority to take them. It wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't even know the contents of the documents.

And that still ignores the time line. The National Archives were trying to get him to return the documents for several months before the Jan 6 committee was even FORMED.
Of course Trump would use these documents for personal gain. He especially would trade the information contained in them for personal favors. He loves people owing him favors. And I see no reason why he would ever voluntarily give important documents back. He feels entitled to hang on to every document associated with him. Trump really, really does not understand that he was merely an individual holding a four year term in office and all of the documents associated with that term belong to the office of the President, not to him personally. With his businesses, the businesses are HIM. That simply does not apply to the job he filled for four years. Basically, for four years he was a temporary employee.
