Veteran Miami prosecutor quits after judge's rebuke over conjugal visits for jailhouse informants

By JOSHUA GOODMAN, Associated Press
Updated March 8, 2024 8:52 p.m.

MIAMI, Florida (AP) — A veteran prosecutor in Miami has resigned after a judge found that state investigators manipulated witnesses, including possibly providing conjugal visits to jailhouse informants in exchange for their testimony, in a high-profile death penalty case against a notorious gang leader.

During his career Michael Von Zamft has led some of the biggest murder, conspiracy and racketeering cases in the Florida state attorney’s office in Miami and at times served as a trainer and supervisor to younger prosecutors.

He resigned this week following a stunning rebuke by the judge, who disqualified him and another prosecutor, Stephen Mitchell, from the resentencing trial of gang leader and convicted murderer Corey Smith.

Nick Rekieta, MN lawyer and YouTuber, facing drug charge

Minnesota-based lawyer and online legal analyst Nick Rekieta is facing a drug charge in Kandiyohi County.

Rekieta was arrested Thursday along with his wife Kayla and a fellow online personality. Prosecutors filed charges against Rekieta and his wife on Friday for second-degree possession, child endangerment, and a gross misdemeanor firearm charge.

According to the charges, law enforcement attempted to execute a search warrant on May 23 at Rekieta’s home in Spicer and was greeted by a girl at the front door who would not let them inside.

After Rekieta refused to provide the door code, law enforcement used a door ram to get inside and found Kayla, Imholte, and four juveniles inside.

Law enforcement proceeded to search the master bedroom and bathroom, where they allegedly found a variety of drug paraphernalia, including three small baggies that tested positive for cocaine, eight green tablets that tested positive for Ketamine, and a digital scale, and several other items that tested positive for cocaine, charges claim.

Authorities also found a Sig Sauer AR with several magazines and loose ammunition underneath the bed, a spent shell casing on the bedroom floor, and located additional firearms and ammunition in the garage, according to court records.

Here, if interested, the search warrant for Nick Rekieta's home. Started from suspicion of child neglect and drug use from four reports to a church pastor, whom I understand is a mandatory reporter. One from church preschool teacher relaying children complaining of being hungry, not getting fed, and wearing same clothes for 3 or 4 days until they started to smell. Others about behavior change, weight loss, track marks on arms. Interestingly, Rekieta's appearance on streams including the one above seem a significant part of the probable cause beyond those.
Fun fact: another tweet notes the judge who approved it was one he had once referred to on his stream as "dumb bitch with a leaky pussy."

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — An assistant district attorney in the Erie County District Attorney's Office is now facing multiple charges, accused of sharing confidential information and driving while high on marijuana.

On Thursday morning, Buffalo Police, alongside other law enforcement agencies, announced the arrest of 28-year-old De'Lenci Shannon-Brown, of Buffalo. He is charged with two misdemeanors: Official Misconduct and Driving While Under the Influence of Drugs.

"Nobody is above the law," said Michael Keane, acting Erie County District Attorney. "We hire our attorneys and our support staff and we entrust them with confidential information and it's an outrage that this behavior took place. It's an outrage that he violated this trust."

Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said officers stumbled upon this alleged misconduct Wednesday while digging through phone records in a separate, unrelated case.

They immediately alerted the DA's office and began working with the sheriff's office to gather more evidence. In the meantime, Keane said, Shannon-Brown was at work, although he was monitored throughout the day and kept away from both court and his computer.

Tom Girardi found guilty of wire fraud: 'It wasn't a hard decision,' juror says

LOS ANGELES CALIF AUGUST 27, 2024 - Former high-powered litigator Tom Girardi exits the federal courthouse in downtown Los Angeles with Natalie Degrati, an investigator with the federal public defender's office, after he was convicted on Aug. 27, 2024 of running a massive 10-year Ponzi scheme in which prosecutors said he siphoned at least $15 million in settlement funds from four of his clients. Jurors convicted the 85-year-old Girardi of four counts of wire fraud for stealing from injured clients and spending money on private jets, golf club memberships, jewelry and the career of his now-estranged wife, ``Real Housewives of Beverly Hills'' star Erika Jayne. A federal court jury in Los Angeles found Tom Girardi, once a legal titan and now a disgraced former attorney, guilty Tuesday of wire fraud for leading a years long scheme in which he embezzled tens of millions of dollars.

The verdict concluded a 13-day trial in which prosecutors elicited emotional testimony from former clients, including a burn victim and a widow whose husband died in a boating accident, employees of the now-closed law firm Girardi Keese and an outside attorney who struggled to get a woman the settlement money she'd been granted.

As clients went unpaid, prosecutors told the jury, Girardi spent money on private jets, country clubs and the entertainment career of his now-estranged wife, Erika Girardi, a star of “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.”

Girardi, 85, had been on trial on four counts of wire fraud; he was found guilty on all four.
