Indian official suspended after he drains reservoir to retrieve phone he dropped while taking selfie
Sun, May 28, 2023 at 7:08 AM GMT+2
NEW DELHI (AP) — A government official in India has been suspended from his job after he ordered a water reservoir to be drained so he could retrieve his smartphone, which he had dropped while taking a selfie.
Food inspector Rajesh Vishwas dropped his Samsung smartphone in Kherkatta dam in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh last week, The Times of India newspaper reported.
Vishwas first asked local divers to jump into the reservoir to find the device, claiming it contained sensitive government data. But after the initial efforts to retrieve his smartphone failed, he asked for the reservoir to be emptied using diesel pumps.
Over the next three days, more than 2 million liters of water were pumped out from the reservoir, which is enough to irrigate at least 1,500 acres of land during India’s scorching summer, local media reported.
In videos that went viral on social media, Vishwas is seen sitting under a red umbrella as diesel pumps run to drain water from the reservoir.
Vishwas told local media the water in the reservoir was unusable for irrigation and that he had received permission from a senior official to drain it.
The smartphone was eventually retrieved but wouldn’t even start because it was waterlogged.
Authorities later suspended Vishwas after he was widely criticized for wasting water resources.
India is one of the most water-stressed countries and extreme temperatures had led to severe water scarcity, causing crop losses, forest fires and cuts to power.

Research university claims $1 million in losses after samples and cultures spoiled
A janitor reportedly destroyed over 20 years of research after turning off a chemistry lab freezer, according to a lawsuit filed in the Rensselaer County Clerk’s Office in upstate New York.
Per the lawsuit, obtained by the Albany Times Union, an unidentified custodial worker contracted at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) lab from Daigle Cleaning Services turned the freezer off after finding a beeping alarm annoying.
The freezer was turned off despite a sign that explained the alarm and how to mute it, according to the suit.
"The freezer is beeping as it is under repair. Please do not move or unplug it. No cleaning required in this area. You can press the alarm/test mute button for 5-10 seconds if you would like to mute the sound,” the sign read in bold letters.
Upon discovering the freezer had been turned off the following day, graduate research staff attempted to save the research materials, “however, a majority of specimens were compromised, destroyed and rendered unsalvageable demolishing more than 20 years of research,” the lawsuit said.
The incident took place in September 2020 and involved at least 25 years of work done by award-winning chemist K.V. Lakshmi.
Located in the Cogswell building, Lakshmi’s research focused on photosynthesis and could have a valuable impact on solar-panel development, RPI’s attorney Michael Ginsberg said.

Going to blame the university here. If the materials are that vital its their responsibility to ensure its survival in the proper conditions. Sticking a note on it and calling it a day does NOT count. They could have spoken to the Janitor and told him to leave it alone. They could have put the power line directly into the wall in such a way so it could not be plugged out by anyone.

Boyce pointed to his Facebook profile, asked the victim to add him as a friend, police said, and she complied.
“I thought if maybe I added him on Facebook, he would leave and he did,” the victim told local outlet WRTV.

MARSHALL COUNTY, Ind. (WSBT) — A woman was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) during an employment meeting with the Marshall County Sheriff's Department.
According to the Sheriff's Department, Nicole Sniadecki, 39, of Plymouth, came in just before 9 a.m. for a scheduled meeting related to her inquiry into employment with the department.
While speaking with Sniadecki, Captain Jeff Snyder observed slurred speech along with an alcohol smell on her breath.

Lidl is recalling PAW Patrol snacks in the UK due to an explicit website link on the packaging.
The URL links to pornographic content and used to be the domain name for the snack maker.
Lidl is recalling "PAW Patrol" branded snacks from its UK stores as the website shown on the packaging now carried explicit content.
The German chain said four products branded with the children's TV show characters were being recalled because the supplier's website had been "compromised" and directed users to content "not suitable for child consumption."
PAW Patrol is a popular kids' TV show that first aired in 2013, with a movie following in 2021. Brands, including movies and TV shows, often license characters to manufacturers to put on their products.
Insider accessed the mobile version of the website and found that it shows Chinese pornographic content. The desktop version of the website displays an error message in Mandarin.
"We recommend that customers refrain from viewing the URL and return this product to the nearest store where a full refund will be given," Lidl said in its product recall notice.

A man damaged a 16th-century Florence fountain while climbing it for a selfie, the latest example of tourists wrecking things
Joshua Zitser

A tourist climbed up the Foutain of Neptune in Florence, Italy, to take a selfie, the mayor said.
He caused around $5,375 in damage to the historic monument, according to Deutsche Welle.
This summer, tourists have repeatedly defaced historic monuments across Italy.
A tourist climbed up the famous Fountain of Neptune in Florence, Italy, this weekend, damaging it by breaking off a piece of marble in the process, the city's mayor said.
Dario Nardella, Florence's Mayor, said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday that the tourist was trying to take a selfie on the monument when he caused damage.
The Fountain of Neptune, which was completely restored in 2018, was built in the 16th century to commemorate the marriage of a member of the House of Medici to an Archduchess of Austria.
Video footage and an image with a blurred-out face, both posted by the mayor on X, appear to show the individual scaling the historic monument in the heart of the Italian city.
Nardella said in the X post that the man was identified thanks to surveillance cameras.
The City of Florence said he is a 22-year-old German tourist.
Nardella said that he would now be made to pay a substantial fine. The exact number was not specified.

Man tries to sue Melbourne hospital after watching his wife's caesarean led to the breakdown of his marriage
Dad tries to sue hospital after watching wife give birth

A father has tried to sue a hospital after he claimed watching his wife deliver their baby via C-section left him with mental distress.
Anil Koppula took legal action against the Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne, seeking $1 billion in damages after watching his wife's caesarean in 2018.
He said he developed a 'psychotic illness', after he saw his wife's blood and organs, and watching the procedure had led to the 'breakdown of his marriage'.
A father has tried to sue a hospital after he claimed watching his wife deliver their baby via C-section left him with mental distress.
'Mr Koppula alleges that he was encouraged, or permitted, to observe the delivery, that in the course of doing so, he saw his wife's internal organs and blood…He says that the hospital breached a duty of care it owed to him and is liable to pay him damages,' the court papers say.
Mr Koppula, who represented himself in court, claimed that the hospital should be liable for damages of $1bn.
The Royal Women's Hospital acknowledged its responsibility to provide a duty of care, but denied that it breached it.
Justice James Gorton on Tuesday threw out the lawsuit, calling it an 'abuse of process,' the Herald Sun reports.
