Supreme Court won’t hear case over FBI national security demands of X

https://thehill.com/regulation/court-ba ... press.coop
The Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear an appeal from X, formerly known as Twitter, seeking to make public the number of times the FBI requested user information from the company in connection with national security investigations.

The social media company sued the government in 2014, during the Obama administration, after it was blocked from publishing the quantity of requests in its biannual online “Transparency Report,” claiming the government unlawfully restrained its speech.

In its petition to the high court, X argued it’s critical to make the standards for discussing the extent of governmental surveillance “clear, settled and constitutionally adequate.”

“History demonstrates that the surveillance of electronic communications is both a fertile ground for government abuse and a lightning-rod political topic of intense concern to the public,” X wrote.

The government’s arguments were largely filed under seal due to the inclusion of classified information.

Two lower federal courts ruled that the FBI rightfully barred the publication of the data to protect national security.

A federal district court in 2020 ruled that the government’s classification decision was justified and that “no more narrow tailoring of the restrictions can be made.”

In March, a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed that decision, with Circuit Judge Daniel Bress, a President Trump appointee, writing that the government’s redactions of the Transparency Report were “narrowly tailored in support of the compelling government interest in national security.”

Bress also said the government’s classified declarations spelled out the importance of keeping confidential the number and frequency of intelligence requests made to social media platforms such as X.

“Against the fuller backdrop of these explicit illustrations of the threats that exist and the ways in which the government can best protect its intelligence resources, we are able to appreciate why Twitter’s proposed disclosure would risk making our foreign adversaries aware of what is being surveilled and what is not being surveilled—if anything at all,” he wrote.

After getting pwned by Mark Cuban, Elon, in a ketamine induced tantrum, has whipped out his ban hammer & started suspending accounts critical of his mismanagement style. Included in the purge are Ken Klippenstein, Ryan Shead, and Liam Nissan (who was going by Sissy SpaceX at the time.)

#ApartheidClyde is trending.

Apparently Elmo sobered up from his ketamine bender, saw the bad press, and un-suspended the accounts that hurt his delicate little fee-fees.

New verification system on X gives boost to dark web sales of stolen accounts

Jonathan Greig
January 5th, 2024

Dark web forums and marketplaces are increasingly selling access to hijacked X accounts verified with specialized tags only given to paying customers.

Researchers at the cybersecurity company CloudSEK said they have noticed the phenomenon since Tesla CEO Elon Musk took over the company and changed the social media site’s verification system.

When Musk took over, he changed the relatively arcane merit-based verification process and made it so anyone could simply purchase verification. He also rolled out other changes that allowed organizations to verify themselves with different colored checkmarks.

Government organizations and NGOs can get gray check marks while companies can get gold. Anyone else can purchase blue verifications. All three require paid monthly subscriptions.

“Dark web forums and marketplaces have a dedicated section where social media sales are extensively observed. Recently, there has been a surge of posts where threat actors were selling accounts with Twitter Gold verification,” the researchers said.

“A strikingly similar series of advertisements was also seen on Telegram channels, indicating that malicious campaigns are brooding on a large scale that requires a Twitter Gold account. The advertisements on the dark web can be traced back to multiple online shops and their marketing partners, such as Facebook, Telegram, etc.”

They added that the amount of shops and service providers today is “humongous” and can be found with simple searches on Google, Facebook and Telegram.

The cybercriminals behind these efforts offer a range of prices for different X accounts. They get the accounts through several different methods:
  • By manually creating accounts and getting them verified before offering them for sale
By hacking existing accounts through previously leaked username and password lists
By using information stealer malware that can steal credentials from infected devices

Just search for "Taylor", single term, and it picks up most of the correct Taylor Swift references.

Elon Musk has made it so you can’t search “Taylor Swift,” that’s how insecure and fragile men are.
The "official" explanation: CBS: Explicit AI-generated Taylor Swift images spread quickly on social media:
Pornographic, AI-generated images of the world's most famous star spread across social media this week, underscoring the damaging potential posed by mainstream artificial intelligence technology: its ability to create convincingly real and damaging images.

The fake images of Taylor Swift were predominantly circulating on social media site X, previously known as Twitter. The photos - which show the singer in sexually suggestive and explicit positions - were viewed tens of millions of times before being removed from social platforms. But nothing on the internet is truly gone forever, and they will undoubtedly continue to be shared on other, less regulated channels.

* * *

Like most major social media platforms, X's policies ban the sharing of "synthetic, manipulated, or out-of-context media that may deceive or confuse people and lead to harm."
I don't buy this:

Twitter is full of porn. It is also full of spam. It is even full of porn spam.

There are better ways to deter the uploading and dissemination of AI-assisted porn than blocking searches for someone's name.

Republicans hate San Francisco (49ers. What's a more capitalistic pursuit than gold mining?)

The original twitter poster almost certainly intended his post to refer to SF, but I thought that possible alternative interpretations should be explored. Tampa Bay (Buccaneers) came to mind, as did Green Bay (Packers), but neither was as funny as Vegas.

Taylor Swift searches blocked on X after fake explicit images of pop singer spread
White House press secretary calls fake images ‘alarming’ and urges social media companies to prevent spread of such misinformation

Reuters

The social media platform X has blocked users from searching for Taylor Swift after fake sexually explicit images of the pop singer proliferated on social media this week, an executive said on Sunday.

Searches for Swift’s name on Sunday afternoon on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter yielded the error message, “Something went wrong. Try reloading.”

“This is a temporary action and done with an abundance of caution as we prioritize safety on this issue,” Joe Benarroch, head of business operations at X, said in a statement.
