Florida’s Money Man Threatens to Cut Ties With Bank of America, Wells Fargo

The Florida GOP and Governor take their War on Woke to the Big Banks - either see the world as they do, or lose all the public funds on deposit, and get out of Florida. Big talk, but it could be classic Republican Kabuki theater to hide their true intention: to benefit DeSantis' top campaign contributor by giving them access to billions in public assets.

Ron DeSantis’ crackdown on “woke” banks could help a big Ron DeSantis donor

The GEO Group is a prison contractor that needs a cash infusion, and is unable to get loans through normal channels because of their financial woes. The new law gives them the ability to hold and use public monies as banks do minus FDIC protections, federal oversight, and public records inquiries. IE: A Dark Bank.

‘Impossible to hold him accountable’: DeSantis signs laws to ease 2024 run
Measures would let him campaign while serving as Florida governor and shield travel records from public

Sam Levine
Mon 15 May 2023 12.00 BST

Ron DeSantis is using the final weeks before he reportedly launches a presidential campaign to modify Florida law to allow him to run while serving as governor and reduce transparency over political spending and his travel.

DeSantis is poised to sign a bill that would exempt him from Florida’s “resign-to-run” law, so that he won’t have to give up his office in order to run for president. Under existing state law, if he were to run, DeSantis would have had to submit a resignation letter before Florida’s qualifying deadline this year and step down by inauguration day in 2025. Last month, Republicans in the state legislature passed a measure that says the restriction does not apply to those running for president or vice-president.

The bill also imposes sweeping new voting restrictions in the state and will make it much harder for non-profits to do voter registration drives.

“I can’t think of a better training ground than the state of Florida for a future potential commander-in-chief,” Tyler Sirois, a Republican state lawmaker, said when the bill was being debated.

Some Democrats questioned why lawmakers would allow DeSantis to take his attention away from being governor. “Why are we signing off on allowing Ron DeSantis the ability to not do his job?” Angie Nixon, a legislator from Jacksonville, said last month.

DeSantis also signed a bill last week that will shield records related to his travel from public view. The new law exempts all of DeSantis’s past and future travel from disclosure under Florida’s public records law, one of the most transparent in the US. It also exempts the state from having to disclose the names of people who meet with the governor at his office or mansion or travel with him, said Barbara Petersen, the executive director of the Florida Center for Government Accountability, who has worked on transparency laws for more than three decades in the state.

DeSantis slams Disney as legal feud escalates: 'Pound sand'
Disney claims DeSantis violated its free speech rights

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday dismissed a lawsuit against him filed by the Walt Disney Company, and said he would continue to try to rein in Disney's power in Florida by taking back control over the land used by Disney World resort.

"Sometimes you just need an executive to come in and tell them to pound sand," DeSantis said in an interview with The American Conservative.

He refuses to announce his schedule specifically because he can’t handle protesters. This wasn’t announced until this morning and people here were literally scrambling to get out of bed to run down there. You could hear them quite clearly from inside his presser. Fucking coward.

The Washington Post @washingtonpost wrote: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed a bill into law Monday barring the state’s colleges and universities from spending money on diversity, equity and inclusion programs, and limiting how race can be discussed in many courses.

“If you look at the way this has actually been implemented across the country, DEI is better viewed as standing for discrimination, exclusion and indoctrination,” DeSantis said at a news conference at New College of Florida in Sarasota. “And that has no place in our public institutions. This bill says the whole experiment with DEI is coming to an end in the state of Florida.” https://wapo.st/3LYw44o
:snippity:
The law also forbids public colleges from offering general education courses — those that are part of a required curriculum for all college students — that “distort significant historical events,” teach “identity politics,” or are “based on theories that systemic racism, sexism, oppression, or privilege are inherent in the institutions of the United States and were created to maintain social, political, or economic inequities.”

The Florida legislation has been met with backlash at both the state and national level, where higher education experts and First Amendment advocates say the state is trampling on academic freedom. “It’s basically state-mandated censorship, which has no place in a democracy,” Irene Mulvey, president of the American Association of University Professors, said in a recent interview with The Washington Post.

DeSantis said students who want to study “niche subjects,” such as critical race theory, ought to look elsewhere. “Florida’s getting out of that game,” he said. “If you want to do things like gender ideology, go to Berkeley. Go to some of these other places.”

The governor held the signing on the campus of New College of Florida, a public liberal arts college in Sarasota, where the governor recently appointed a crop of conservative trustees. Eliminating New College’s DEI office was among the newly constituted board’s first orders of business.

The event drew protests, whose chants could be heard inside the bill-signing ceremony.

Mini-Mussolini preparing to announce WH bid any day now

https://www.wfla.com/news/politics/desa ... y-day-now/
A presidential run for Gov. Ron DeSantis is now looking all but certain after two developments in Tallahassee Monday. The governor’s press secretary Bryan Griffin handed in his resignation from the executive office of the governor and announced he is joining DeSantis’ political operation. Griffin said in a statement: “I am stepping away from this role to pursue other avenues of helping to deliver the governor’s success to our country.”

That same political operation also announced an office move Monday. After spotting a moving truck outside of the Republican Party of Florida headquarters in Tallahassee, 8 On Your Side confirmed the political operation is setting up shop in a new office across town. The cost of this move could force the governor’s political team to file with the FEC within the next 15 days, which would potentially confirm a presidential bid. :snippity: :snippity:

A Florida Teacher Showed a Disney Film With a Gay Character. Now She's Under Investigation

Florida’s state Department of Education has opened an investigation into a teacher who showed her students a Disney film featuring a gay character.

Jenna Barbee, a teacher in the Hernando County School District, said in a TikTok that she showed the film, Strange World, to her fifth grade class after a unit on ecosystems, plants and animals, since the movie focuses on humans’ relationship to the environment. (The Hernando County School District did not return TIME’s request for comment.)

“My thought process was, what a better way to showcase all these standards along with huge lessons of overcoming differences, spreading kindness, communication and chasing your dreams,” she continued.

The film is a PG-rated animation that follows three generations of a family as they explore uncharted land beneath their world. The movie was released in 2022 and stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Gabrielle Union, among others. The movie, which is Disney’s first film with an openly gay character, has a subplot about a boy having a crush on another boy, but Barbee said that was not the reason she showed the film.

“The LGBTQ aspect of the film is harmless,” she said. “It’s just a talked-about crush.”

'We made history tonight:' Donna Deegan will be the next mayor of Jacksonville
Donna Deegan celebrated her win Tuesday night at Estrella Cocina in Downtown Jacksonville surrounded by supporters and family.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — First Coast News has called the Jacksonville mayoral race in favor of Donna Deegan.

She celebrated her win Tuesday night at Estrella Cocina in Downtown Jacksonville surrounded by supporters and family.

"We made history tonight, it's a brand-new day for Jackonville, Florida" said Deegan during her acceptance speech. "You know what the best part is? Love won today."

Deegan will become the first woman mayor in Jacksonville history.

She continued, "As much as I wanted to win this race for the people of Jacksonville, I wanted love to win. I made a decision when I got into this race that no matter what happened, no matter what the landscape looked like, we were going to lead with love over fear, we would not go with division, we would go with unity..."

Deegan, a Democrat, narrowly beat out Republican opponent Daniel Davis with roughly 8,000 votes. She said during her acceptance speech that Davis called to tell her congratulations on a hard fought race following the announcement she had won.

Yes, this is originally from Fox News, but trust me. I almost giggled watching team trump and team desantis go for each other's throats.
Pro DeSantis PAC offers to pay for Trump to move out of Florida after he called it " the worst state"
And it pains me to have to say this about trump, but many of the things he brings up about the state of Florida are absolutely true. I can't believe I used the word trump and true in the same sentence.

How the heck would Trump know anything at all about the state of Florida? All he does is golf and eat in his rich man's estate. He never travels around. He never talks to anyone who lives in Florida, unless they pay to see him. He's never seen 99.9% of Florida.

Trump would be saying the same thing about Florida in any case where a governor of Florida was apparently going to run against him in a primary. Even if that person had actually helped make Florida a nice place to live, he would be saying Florida is a cesspool.
