A man accused of killing six people and injuring three others, including two officers, in a series of shootings across Austin and San Antonio on Tuesday has been arrested and charged with capital murder, according to police.

Interim Austin police chief Robin Henderson announced the capital murder charges and other pending charges against the suspect at a news conference early Wednesday. The Austin Police Department says that the man is linked to four shootings in Austin and possibly a homicide in San Antonio that all took place over eight hours Tuesday; the mass shooting was the 39th of 2023, according to a Washington Post database.

While authorities did not name the suspect, Travis County jail records show that Shane James, 34, was booked on four counts of capital murder at around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

SOON: Las Vegas police will hold a news conference
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department will soon hold a news conference to provide updates on the shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill and Adam Garcia, vice president of Public Safety Services and director of University Police Services, are expected to speak at the news conference.

Officials do not release information about shooting victims
Officials are not yet releasing any information about any victims in the active shooting at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, according to Adam Garcia, the director of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Police Services.

At a news conference Wednesday, Garcia said there is no further threat to the university and police do not identified a motive.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department previously said the suspect was dead.

A number of victims in the University of Nevada shooting have been transported to local hospitals, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill said Wednesday at a news conference.

An investigation is ongoing, he added.

I was in a residential area near UNLV, at the home of a retired UNLV math professor. My Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI at UNLV) ukulele group was rehearsing when we heard about the active shooter. We are scheduled to perform at UNLV Beam Hall next week. We finished up and I had to find a route home to avoid all the closures. I-15 is also closed down to allow for first responders. FUCK THE NRA

I read on the interweb that the black band means they lost an officer, and the funeral hasn't happened, because after the funeral the band comes off.

Reason for Metro's black band is because two Nevada State Police officers were killed by a hit and run drunk driver last week while they were assisting a motorist who was stopped on I-15 in Las Vegas. Suspect was quickly apprehended. There was supposed to be a memorial service at Alligent Stadium tonight but it has been cancelled due to the UNLV shooting.

The black bands are not limited to police. I've worn a black arm band twice - first time was in high school when a classmate committed suicide by shotgun. It is a show of respect and mourning.
