Another Shooting

Or, as I’ve heard it said, “Well-regulated militias don’t slaughter children & random strangers.”
A well regulated militia is actually DEFINED in the Constitution - and in the non amended part to boot.Dave from down under wrote: ↑Sat Oct 28, 2023 2:39 pm “ A well regulated Militia, “
I believe that the US has a law or two about that…
I'm with this. I assume driver licensing varies by state, but in my day in WA State, we had driver's ed (yes, the schools still taught it back then), had to pass a written test and driver's test to get a license, but still - you can't go driving on the roads without proof on insurance, minimum liability insurance. I'm not in the insurance industry, but I imagine that the insurance companies will charge a might high price to cover someone wanting an assault rifle in case of any deaths, injuries, etc. One goes around ignoring a law and not getting a license and insurance can face tickets/fines or even jail time.Dave from down under wrote: ↑Sat Oct 28, 2023 2:39 pm “ A well regulated Militia, “
Other than that..
Treat guns as vehicles
Levels of licence (from driver to pilot) that need to show regular competency.
Levels of insurance (based on weapon damage potential and use and storage).
No unsecured firearms in public (locking devises on all - and id like a 10 minute time lock as well).
No drugs/alcohol
Etc
Columnist Jeff Tiedrich now opens his pieces about gun violence by saying "a well regulated militia killed three people yesterday," or however many died in the latest incident when he posts. Just to remind people.
To clarify, his argument when he first started doing that was "If you think a single person having the unrestricted right to bear arms is the same as a general rule for a well-regulated militia to be similarly well-armed, then you should be able to drop 'a well-regulated militia' as the subject for any gun killing. If it fails to make sense to you when the words are replaced, then clearly the two are not the same f*cking thing." Or words to that effect.W. Kevin Vicklund wrote: ↑Sat Oct 28, 2023 8:23 pm

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A fight between two groups turned deadly in Florida when a shooting in a Tampa street during Halloween festivities resulted in two deaths and 18 people hospitalized early Sunday morning, police said. One suspect is in custody and at least one more is being sought.
At least two shooters opened fire just before 3 a.m. on the 1600 block of East 7th Avenue in the Ybor City area, Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said during a press conference at the scene.
The fight occurred in an area with several bars and clubs, and there were large numbers of late night revelers in the area at the time, Bercaw said. Police were not immediately sure if the people involved in the fight were inside any of the bars before the shooting.
Tampa police spokeswoman Jonee Lewis said “hundreds” of people were out on the streets as numerous nightspots closed early Sunday. She said one person was detained but no charges were immediately filed. “They’re being questioned and we’ll go from there,” Lewis said.
A mass shooting in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood left 15 people injured Sunday morning, police said.
Officers were called to the 1200 block of South Pulaski at approximately 1:04 a.m. Sunday for reports of shots fired, according to an official statement by Chicago police.
When responding units arrived, officers reportedly observed a suspect firing shots into a building where a large gathering was taking place.
The suspect attempted to flee the scene, but was taken into custody a short time later, Chicago police said.
At least 15 people sustained gunshot wounds during the attack, police said. A 26-year-old woman was amon the victims, shot in the left hip and right buttocks. She was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, police said.
A second victim, a 48-year-old man, was shot in both legs and hips, and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
At least 13 other victims sustained gunshot wounds during the shooting, and all were listed in good condition at area hospitals with a variety of injuries, police said.

Sgt Jon Guay of Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office blasted state law enforcement in a since-deleted Facebook post
The Maine State Police have been blasted by a local deputy as “utter clowns” for its response in the immediate aftermath to the mass shootings in Lewiston last week, as it emerged that several major warning signs about suspect Robert Card had been missed in the months prior to the horrific incidents.
In a since-deleted scathing Facebook post, seen by Bangor Daily News before it was taken down, Sgt Jon Guay of Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office claimed local and federal agencies were met with “radio silence” during the manhunt as state troopers took the lead on the case.
Authorities on Monday said that Card’s “concerned” family had alerted the local sheriff about his mental health – and that they were concerned he had access to firearms – in May this year. Records demonstrating how Card “aggressively” discussed guns — in conversations with former recycling plant colleagues and friends — have also surfaced.
The Maine National Guard had also asked local police in September to check on the US Army reservist amid concerns that he would “snap and commit a mass shooting”, according to CNN.

How ridiculous is this story?!
Cannon Air Force Base is on lockdown as it conducts "active shooter protocol," Capt. Jackie Pienkowski, chief of public affairs at the base, said early Tuesday evening.
"There's not an active shooter, but we are trying to locate a person who has made threats," Clovis Police Chief Roy Rice said about 6 p.m.
"Nobody has been shot."
Rice said Clovis' police SWAT team is on base, working with Cannon to clear areas around the base golf course and hospital. "We'll clear every building before the night's done," Rice said.
"No known injuries, but they are on lockdown," Curry County Sheriff Mike Reeves said. "They had some information about somebody might be armed ... possibly a shot fired. But we can't find anybody. (Clovis) PD, state police, all my guys are on base. But that's about as much as I know right now."
Cannon personnel received a text message at 4:59 p.m. that read, "There is an active shooter on Cannon AFB. Last known location was bldg#1408/HOSPITAL. All non-response personnel should seek shelter immediately until further notice."
Pienkowski issued the following statement from Cannon at 6:24 p.m.:
"Both Cannon AFB and Chavez housing residents are directed to stay sheltered in place until further notice. Security Forces is conducting clearing operations and searches across base. There are no known injuries at this time. We will continue to update here as new information becomes available."

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - Four people had to be taken to the hospital after they were struck by bullets in an early morning shooting, where hundreds of rounds pierced through a DeKalb County home on Thanksgiving morning.
Officials tell FOX 5 the shooting happened shortly before 3 a.m. on the 3000 block of Cascade Manor Drive. At the scene, officers found four victims who had been shot inside the home. The victims ranged in age from 37 to 57 years old.
Medics rushed the four people to a local hospital. They are all expected to survive.
The shooting terrified neighbors, many of whom were preparing to host their families for Thanksgiving that day.
Caius Rigsby lives in the area. He says he couldn't believe what he was hearing.
"Some shots just started firing off. They shot consistently, they didn't stop." Rigsby told FOX 5. The shots kept going and going. "I just rolled off the bed, grabbed my girlfriend and covered her."
According to authorities, the victims were inside the home when someone or a group fired over 100 rounds into the house.
Police say three other people were inside the home during the shooting and were not injured.

Suspect arrested in shooting of three Palestinian students in Vermont
20-year-olds were on their way to a family home for Thanksgiving dinner when a white man with a handgun fired on them

A suspect was arrested Sunday in the shooting of three Palestinian students in Burlington, Vermont the night before, police said, adding that contrary to media reports the shooter did not speak before firing.
Jason J Eaton, 48, was arrested Sunday afternoon near where the men, all 20 years old, were shot, the Burlington Police Department announced. They said he lives in an apartment close to the scene, a search of which revealed evidence that gave investigators “probable cause to believe that Mr Eaton perpetrated the shooting”, police said.
The victims – Hisham Awartani, Kinnan Abdalhamid and Tahseen Ali Ahmad, all 20 years old – are undergraduate students at Brown University, Haverford College and Trinity College respectively, and were on their way to Awartani’s grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving dinner when a white man with a handgun fired on them.
Two of the men are reportedly in stable condition, according to police, but the third received “much more serious injuries” after being hit in the spinal cord. Two were reportedly wearing the Palestinian keffiyeh when they were attacked.
The chief of police, Jon Murad, recommended caution when it came to identifying a motive in the attacks. “The fact is that we don’t yet know as much as we want to right now,” Murad said. “But I urge the public to avoid making conclusions based on statements from uninvolved parties who know even less.”
Police said two of the men are American citizens and the third is a legal resident.

His mother says that he's a "very religious person" who often reads the Bible.
Kinnan Abdalhamid’s uncle also spoke briefly at the press conference, having just flown in from California. He said that his family sent his nephew to the U.S. “because they thought it would be safer” than life in the West Bank. “I feel somehow betrayed in that decision,” he said.

A man accused of killing six people and injuring three others, including two officers, in a series of shootings across Austin and San Antonio on Tuesday has been arrested and charged with capital murder, according to police.
Interim Austin police chief Robin Henderson announced the capital murder charges and other pending charges against the suspect at a news conference early Wednesday. The Austin Police Department says that the man is linked to four shootings in Austin and possibly a homicide in San Antonio that all took place over eight hours Tuesday; the mass shooting was the 39th of 2023, according to a Washington Post database.
While authorities did not name the suspect, Travis County jail records show that Shane James, 34, was booked on four counts of capital murder at around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.
