Same here, not that far north and west of you. It was almost Stygian black in my office right before a 10:00 Zoom call this morning. Normally, looking out the windows at the lake makes me happy, even in winter. But today, you'd never believe you were in prime summer season on one of the most popular vacation lakes in the Northeast.

At least the jet skis aren't out today. I feel the same way about them as you do about lawn mowers.

Local radio news reports local cases of flesh eating bacteria in the waters around the East End and coastal Connecticut.

Recent rain has washed bacteria into the salt water so many beaches are closed. Some areas are closed for shellfish harvesting.

One case of flesh eating bacteria appears to be the result of eating raw oysters.

Perfect late summer weather this weekend on the North Fork. Highs in the low 80s. Lows in the 60s.

Some local advertisers still pushing early summer merchandise but a few are starting end of season sales. Anyone want annual flowers? ;)

The cottage just to our east is occupied this weekend with 5th/6th generation cousins of Mrs. V. They have won the weather lottery. ;)

Mrs.V's shopping buddy, aka cousin from DC, will be heading home on Tuesday. :(

The summer's over...... ;)

Mrs.V and her shopping buddy are headed to the upscale area of New Suffolk (home to the US Navy's first submarine base) to hit the fancy shops.

Meanwhile the cats are holding me hostage on the porch to insure that Mrs. V returns in time to serve their supper. ;)

Sunday afternoon and some Circle visitors are packing for their trips home.

Three, maybe four,
cottages will go dark tonight and tomorrow.

Mrs.V's sister will visit us here next month for the first time in over 20 years. She and her husband summer in Maine but never find the time to get down here.

As the Circle begins to empty we are enjoying wonderful fall weather. Highs in the 70s. Lows in the 50s.

Since Sunday 3 cottages have emptied for the season. A 4th cottage may have emptied but I can't see it from the porch. I haven't seen any of the folks who were there this weekend walking in the Circle for 2 days.

As the North Fork empties less trash is produced. The good old European American trash truck has been arriving earlier this week than its has for over a month.

It is quiet now and will remain so until Labor Day, the last gasp of summer.

Then about 3 weeks later the dreaded weekend pumpkin traffic will begin as harvest season gets into full swing.

The morning DJs on the local Oldies station just admitted that the summer is winding down. :faint:

It is not even September yet! The Oldies station usually keeps pushing summer until October.

I guess the overnight temperatures in the 50s have convinced them. ;) I was chilly last night. Got up and put on a flannel shirt.

Refrigerator repair guy coming today. A wide window of possible arrival times so I am up early just in case. ;)

Forecast today is for rain, then more rain followed by even more rain into tomorrow. That's the forecast from the Oldies station which always puts a positive spin on local weather so as not to discourage tourists. So I am expecting monsoons.

Oldies station fishing report is pushing porgies.

Not my favorite fish. I'd rather eat canned tuna.

Small wonder there are plenty of porgies left in the Bay at the end of summer. ;)

Unusually quiet Sunday morning.

This morning is the Jamesport FD 5K Sound to Bay Run. So the Main Rd is currently closed to traffic.

The Run starts at Iron Pier Beach on the Sound. As soon as all the runners cross Sound Ave which happens quickly since they are all fresh at that point, Sound Ave is reopened and
Main Rd is closed.

Once most of the runners cross Main Rd it is reopened. Stragglers have to cross at the Jamesport traffic light.

Starting to hear traffic so Main Rd may have reopened. ;)

Hurricane Franklin is going to cause high waves on our south shore along the Atlantic beaches.

Good news for surfers but will discourage family beachgoers and will cause erosion and might wash out beach roads just in time for Labor Day weekend.

Today an accident has backed up eastbound traffic across the Canal on the South Fork. Eastbound morning traffic was already heavy this week due to the Hamptons Classic Horse Show.

Today the entire south shore of Long Island is under a high alert for rip currents and a high surf advisory (6 to 9 feet). Some beaches are closed to swimming.

The surf advisory may not sound that serious but the roads on the barrier islands and on the South Fork Atlantic beaches are very low and tend to wash out easily.

Otherwise we expect perfect weather for the Labor Day weekend.

A six foot wave is a monster. I don't go out in anything higher than four feet. I'm a skinny dude, and 6 to 9 feet is scary.

East Hampton beaches remain closed for a second day. Also small craft warnings.

Powerful hurricanes don't have to get close to shore to disrupt normal activities.

So here we are at the Labor Day weekend. Sunny cool weather. Beach surf and rip currents beginning to calm.

Here schools open next week so this will be the last gasp of summer.

Busy weekend for the local Oldies station which will be broadcasting live from both the Hamptons Classic Horse Show and the Shinnecock Indian Nation's Annual Pow Wow.

And as the weekenders arrive the lawnmowers come out. :(

Expecting many noisy parties, some with illegal fireworks, within hearing distance this weekend.

Going to be too cool for serious beachgoers and too early for fall fruits and veggies this weekend so the wineries and breweries will be very busy.

We learned yesterday that the supermarket 4 miles to the east is going to cease operations on October 9th.

There are other markets not much further away but this is the only local market that sells Mrs.V's favorite brand of marmalade. So Mrs. V is heading over there today to get another couple of jars.

Warm weather has returned here for a few days.

New York State has reopened the state park beaches on Long Island now that the surf and rip currents are fading.

Fireworks going off a bit to the west.

One of the houses there is an AirBnB which appears to be occupied by a party crowd this weekend. Was noisy Friday evening as well.

Just got the word that Mrs. V's #2 brother and his wife will be here the last week of this month when Mrs. V's sister will also be here.

This is good. Mrs. V was beginning to suffer from lack of relatives syndrome. The primary symptom is her suggesting that maybe we should head back to Texas soon. ;)

That brother owes us money for his share of the new roof on the cottage that he and Mrs. V own together. He will not leave the North Fork without paying up. Mrs. V is very persuasive.
;)

So we have 2 weeks until the siblings arrive, a week or so with them here, then about 2 weeks until we head to Texas. Where has the summer gone? ;)

The fireworks have ceased.
