Winter Olympics - PyeongChang, South Korea, February 2018

I LOVE the Olympics! This is the time we get to see athletes and sports that are otherwise never on TV.

If you are in the US, the NBC family of networks is showing the events, many of which will be on NBCOlympics.com streaming. The day by day TV schedule is here: http://www.nbcolympics.com/tv-listings

Note that there are a few events starting the day before the opening ceremonies.

 Yes. I really enjoy the Olympics. And could use another diversion right now so I don't just put my head in the oven.

Didn't I hear Pence is attending? If so, all the snubs from the athletes will be fun to watch. :swoon:

 If onamatopeic determinism were A Thing, the toxophilitic tone of PyeongChang's name suggests it as an ideal venue for an archery tournament.

:bag: I'll get my coat.

You heard correctly, he is trying to pull of another football / baseball game trick. Seems to miss the fact that Olympics were a time when war was put to rest:

I’m nervous. Pence is going to be evangelically political and it’s not going to go over well.

Yeah
.Fred Warmbier, the father of an American who died after he was imprisoned in North Korea, will attend the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, later this month, The Washington Post reported on Sunday. He will travel to the country as a guest of Vice President Mike Pence.

I have a dream (no, not quoting MLK) that S.Korea would poke a long stick at Pence and his entourage by rejecting Warmbier from entering the country as a potential trouble maker during the games :shh: .

Oh, Shit: 1,200 Olympics Security Guards Sidelined Due To Norovirus Outbreak
Timothy Burke
Today 1:47amFiled to: 2018 olympics

1,200 security staffers have been sent home due to a norovirus outbreak just days before the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics are scheduled to kick off.

41 guards suffered sudden diarrhea and vomiting due to the highly contagious disease, prompting the prophylactic evacuation of the security staffers. An outbreak of the virus rocked last year’s athletics world championships in London, sidelining at least 30 athletes and team members and leading to a controversial time trial for one athlete who was barred from competing in the qualifying rounds due to his being suspected of having the disease.

Norovirus is so contagious due to its ability to survive outside of a host for several days; both North and South Korea are also in the midst of a massive outbreak of bird and swine flus. More than 80,000 North Koreans have tested positive for swine flu while a million chickens and half a million eggs have been destroyed in South Korea due to the bird flu outbreak there.

Other than that, temperatures are expected to be the lowest ever recorded at an Olympic opening ceremony on Friday. Two years ago, the pool was sick. This year, all the athletes and spectators might be.

Am I a bad person for thinking it would be nice if Mike Pence contracted the norovirus at the Olympics? :?

Trump is so germphobic that he probably will refuse to be in the same room with Pence and Ivanka after they return from Korea. ;)

BREAKING: 47 Russian athletes lost their doping appeal. They will not compete in these Olympic Games.
http://
nyti.ms/2nSNqV6

8:35 PM - Feb 8, 2018
PYEONGCHANG, South Korea — Russia failed in an 11th hour attempt to overturn a ban against 47 athletes and coaches from participating at the 2018 Winter Games on Friday, saving the International Olympic Committee from welcoming individuals it had judged to be tainted by the most elaborate doping program in sports history.

The decision, delivered by the secretary general of the Court of Arbitration for Sport at a packed news conference, just hours before the opening ceremony, allowed the I.O.C. a reprieve from the legal disputes and welter of criticism linked to the Russia’s doping scandal.

The court essentially ruled that the I.O.C. had the right to decide which Russian athletes it could invite because it had already banned the country’s Olympic committee in December for its yearslong doping program that had corrupted several Winter and Summer Games.

Russia has continued to deny that it operated the doping program, whose tentacles reached to the highest levels of Russian sport, according to investigators. The panel agreed.

Remember Pita Taufatofua, the flag bearer for Tonga in the 2016 Olympics? (the shirtless, oiled up taekwondo athlete?) Well, he qualified for the Winter Olympics in cross-country skiing. And once again, he was chosen as the flag bearer.

And once again, he went shirtless and oiled up:

Watching the Korean athletes march together, and the North & South Korean hockey players carry the torch together while their flags waved next to each other was very touching. For me, anyway. [blinks back tears]

Top that, Pence and President My Button is Bigger than Yours!

If you missed it, there was an amazing drone light show, too.

The fact that Pence remained seated when the host country's athletes walked in was rude and churlish.

And don't think that people didn't notice.
