Re: Weather Alerts
I posted the above back in November. The game is tonight. The temperature should be about 3° at the start of the game while the wind chill will be about -13°. There are underground pipes which keep the ground about 55° so at least the playing field is not frozen. All the spectators may be frozen, but not the grass.MN-Skeptic wrote: ↑Wed Nov 24, 2021 8:09 pm I know this isn't exactly the right thread, but I think it's appropriate.
U.S. Soccer Has Selected Columbus and St. Paul to Host Critical Home World Cup Qualifiers Against El Salvador and Honduras
More at the link. With results at home vital to qualifying for the World Cup, U.S. Soccer has selected Columbus, Ohio and St. Paul, Minn. as the venues for the critical World Cup Qualifiers against El Salvador and Honduras.
Lower.com Field will be the site of USA-El Salvador, presented by Volkswagen, on Jan. 27 (ESPN networks, Univision networks). Following the away match against Canada, the U.S. returns to face Honduras on Feb. 2 for the first World Cup Qualifier at Allianz Field. (FS1, Univision networks). Kickoff times will be confirmed in the near future.
Minnesota will become the 21st different state to host a World Cup Qualifier when the USMNT takes on Honduras at Allianz Field. The team makes its second visit to the home of Minnesota United FC, after previously opening the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup with a 4-0 win against Guyana. The stadium has also been the site of two USWNT friendlies against Portugal in September 2019 and Korea Republic just last month.
So why post in the Weather thread? Because they will be playing soccer in Minnesota on Feb 2. In an open arena. Feb 2. St. Paul. Where the average high on that day is 25°. These folks are nuts.

That map makes it look as if it's going to stop right before it hits Pittsburgh. Starting tonight, rain; starting 4-7 AM to 7 PM, ice; then comes snow on top of ice. Because it's starting out with rain, there is no way to pre-treat against the ice and snow. It's not going to be a fun 72 hours. We're all set with bread, milk, etc., but hubby had to run some errands today, and said every place was packed.

Re: Weather Alerts
It's a mess here from the storm, but it could have been worse, although north of the city it is. We were looking at twelve hours of freezing rain and ice, but the temperature didn't drop for that long, so I don't think we had more than several hours of icing. It's certainly not a day to be out on the roads, but It didn't get as bad as it could have. We deal with snow just fine here, but ice storms are not as common here. I don't think it's unusual for us to go through winters without dealing with ice. When I lived in Michigan, it was a whole 'nother story.

Tonight the temp drops from 50 to much colder. However, the only winter storm warnings and winter weather advisory area, south of me, again. Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and mid-Illinois, up to Chicago, are looking at winter storms. For me, maybe an inch.

There's a bad combination of melting snow, heavy rain, ice in the rivers, creeks, and streams with high temperatures. It makes for a real mess.PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Thursday was a record setting day here in W. Pennsylvania with both daily rain totals and daily high temperature records being set.
As we start our day, flooding is still ongoing in several communities. This includes:
An active ice jam is ongoing in southeast Lawrence county along Slippery Rock Creek. The Flood Warning goes through at least 8:30a
High water on the Allegheny River at Rimer. The river is expected to rise above the flood stage of 19” tomorrow morning.
A broader flood advisory is in place through 8:30 for nearly all of Butler and Beaver county. A broad flood advisory is in place for Lawrence County through 10:30a.

Today's alarm clock was thunder, thunder, and more thunder. I had not expected a thunderstorm in February especially.
Not sure why I bothered shoveling the snow on Thursday.

Oregon I-84 was closed yesterday in both directions continuing into today because of a +100 vehicle pile up. Effectively, the entire pass from Pendleton and La Grande is closed.

Forecast to get down to 29° tonight, about as cold as it ever gets here*, and stay chilly through the weekend.
*there was that one time it got down into the teens, and the uninsulated exterior piping at homes across the city created a winter wonderland that was largely unappreciated.

I hate winter, but it's almost over.
Re: Weather Alerts
Any consolation that it's the first day of meteorological spring?
We are 9 inches under for snowfall for this winter so far. We had the seventh-highest rain amount in February. Not good if you live in a flood zone around here. I never care how much snow we get in March. The days are longer and warmer, and even a foot of snow will be gone in a week.
Briefly, 70 degrees was on the weather map for this weekend.

Rising Mississippi River to halt construction, trigger routine levee inspections, starting Friday

Heavy rains will cause the Mississippi River to rise to 11.4 feet Friday in New Orleans. This means construction work near the region's levees must stop while federal officials inspect those structures.
The Army Corps of Engineers said Thursday that it plans to conduct twice weekly inspections of the levees while the river remains high, and that any subsurface projects within 1,500 feet of the levees should come to a halt while the inspections occur.
Those projects include any installations of swimming pools in neighborhoods that are adjacent to levees, any foundation installations for new homes, and any utility work that requires crews to dig underground, USACE Public Affairs Specialist Matthew Roe said.
Crews can apply for waivers to continue their work; the Corps considers those requests on a case-by-case basis when the river’s height crests above 11 feet.

6 dead, including 2 children, as major tornado hits Iowa
Winterset is a bit southwest of Des Moines. It's in Madison County, as in "The Bridges of Madison County."Six people, including two children, were killed when a powerful tornado ripped across central Iowa on Saturday evening.
The Madison County Emergency Management Agency said in addition to the six deaths, at least four people were injured.
At least an EF-3 tornado ripped through Winterset, Iowa, just southwest of Des Moines, according to the National Weather Service.
"Initial interrogation of photos and videos from around Winterset suggests at least EF3 tornado damage occurred late Saturday afternoon," the Des Moines NWS office wrote on Twitter. "NWS survey teams will be out Sunday to thoroughly investigate the damage and further assess a potential rating.”
Photos and video from several cities across central Iowa showed damaged homes.
An emergency center was set up in New Bridge Church in Winterset, officials said.
