Thx RTH. The article describes how Prince Charles's Aston Martin is converted to run on fuel derived from white wine and cheese whey. Presumably over-priced organic cheese from his own estate's production, and wine from his own vineyards.
But whatever fuel is employed, surely an Aston Martin (or any other luxurious fuel-guzzling status symbol) is never green?
Hypocrisy runs deep with the Queen of England and her family. They love their unaccountable privilege.

a simple pill could keep people infected with the coronavirus
a case of bad highlighting in the NYT Daily Newsletter
Full sentence reads of course as: "Molnupiravir, an antiviral medication made by Merck, could herald a not-too-distant future when a simple pill could keep people infected with the coronavirus from dying or falling severely ill."
The highlighting happens by the choice of using those words as a link to the full article at https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/17/heal ... ravir.html

Re: Weird Headlines
Drug lord Pablo Escobar smuggled hippos into Colombia.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2 ... ilization/
“It was logistically difficult to move them around, so the authorities just left them there, probably thinking the animals would die,” Nataly Castelblanco-Martínez, a Colombian ecologist working at the University of Quintana Roo in Mexico, told the BBC earlier this year.
Instead, the hippos flourished. In the 27 years since Escobar’s death, the group of four has swelled to between 80 and 120.

Re: Weird Headlines
Ya, and they are starting to spread beyond the lake Escobar had them in, and people have been attacked by them. Hippos are utter bastards. The Egyptians called them Water Demons.
One of the problems is that the locals haven't got the message that Hippos are dangerous, so they have been going up to them thinking they are passive like cows.

It's not just what Suranis says, it's very much not a happy ending for the other river life, as the hippos make a total shitpile of the water and the river bed. Beavers (in the right environments) are sometimes described as ecosystem engineers; hippos are ecosystem demolition contractors.
For the sake of the ecosystem, they need eradicated or reenzooed.

One usually thinks of invasive species of something much smaller, sometimes greener. Do hippos feed on Asian carp? Move them to the US river systems!

No, they're herbivores. Like many herbivores they might eat an occasional bit of meat, but they don't have rods or nets to go fishing.

Re: Weird Headlines
Yeah, the article says they have become a nuisance and the locals are starting a program to sterilize them before the population explodes.
And yes, most people don't know that the #1 (non-microbial) killer of people in Africa is not the Lion, Snake or Alligator, but the Hippo. Powerful, surprisingly quick, foul-tempered and aggressive.

Actually, poisonous snakes as a group kill tens of thousands of people in Africa every year.roadscholar wrote: ↑Mon Oct 18, 2021 2:11 pm And yes, most people don't know that the #1 (non-microbial) killer of people in Africa is not the Lion, Snake or Alligator, but the Hippo. If I recall correctly, hippos kill several hundred humans each year.

I stand corrected.

I knew they kill hundreds of people every year, but they're vegetarians? They don't eat people they kill?
I heard that in the Zoo they eat Soylent Green.

Re: Weird Headlines
I have seen it pointed out that hippos kill more humans than crocodiles* (which would be a non-mammal) in Africa. It is conceivable that hippos kill more humans than any one single species of poisonous snake. Or, maybe whoever was saying this did not really consider all of the options.roadscholar wrote: ↑Mon Oct 18, 2021 3:20 pm I stand corrected.

* Alligators are native to US and China, and as far I know do not live in Africa.
Re: Weird Headlines
Pedant here.
There are NO poisonous snakes. You will not die from eating one.
There are, however, VENOMOUS snakes. You may die if one bites you and you are envenomated.

As long as we are picking nits, a few snakes do exist that are both venomous _and_ poisonous.
