Deadly tornado hits Mississippi as storm system stretches across East
A destructive storm system draped itself across half the country Thursday, from the Gulf Coast to Canada and with a wingspan from Maine to the Dakotas. At least one person was killed in Mississippi, where a tornado touched down.
Authorities in Kemper County, Miss., along the Alabama state line, reported that the storm also caused several injuries and extensive damage and destroyed at least one steel building.
By early afternoon, the tornado was moving toward Alabama, and the more heavily populated cities of Birmingham and Tuscaloosa were in the path of the worst of the storm system.
A tree fell on this home in Hazelwood, Mo., during heavy storms Wednesday. There were two reports of tornadoes in the town, according to Weather.com, and the governor declared a state of emergency.
The system, which has disrupted weather all over the country this week, formed a giant T on Thursday. Snow fell in the Dakotas and upstate New York, and ice slickened roads in Wisconsin. Rain drenched the Ohio Valley and New Orleans.more... with photos:

Weatherman opines that the OKC area tornado is the most destructive in world history. While this may or may not be true, the fact is that the more property and the more people there are in an area hit by a natural disaster, the more harm the disaster will do. Hurricanes are usually used as the subject of such an observation, but it also applies to floods, last year's derechos, tornadoes, forest fires, ...

I just spoke to family in Tulsa. Almost everything there is shut down and people sent home. Family is safe for now, but if they get hit they have nowhere to go, no underground shelter or basements.

Moore got hit a few years ago too. Nearly leveled the town then also.
Edit: May 3, 1999 an F-5 tornado hit that area.

I would think several times about moving back there if I were...anyone.Yeah, I've been on a rant about this most of the afternoon. The developers who are building all those tract homes should be required to build storm cellars for every X number of homes they build. Ditto for the schools having storm cellars. But OK doesn't like the gubmint telling biznesses that they can't put people in death's way with their products. I wonder how many of the OK Congressional delegation voted against Sandy relief?
