Richard Trumka, a third-generation coal miner who became one of the nation’s most politically influential labor leaders, representing more than 12 million workers as the president of the AFL-CIO, died Aug. 5 at 72.

His death was confirmed by labor federation spokesman Tim Schlittner, who did not provide additional details. Speaking to reporters Thursday, President Biden called Mr. Trumka a close friend and said he died while on a camping trip with family.

Yes it does. She was great on Night Court. I had no idea she was 70.
Edit: I had forgotten that Harry Anderson is gone too. He passed in 2018. He was even younger than Markie.

Coach Bobby Bowden
Source: AP

By STEVE REED

Bobby Bowden, the folksy Hall of Fame coach who won 377 games and built Florida State into one of college football’s great dynasties with two national championships, has died. He was 91.

Bobby’s son, Terry, confirmed to The Associated Press that his father died at home surrounded by family early Sunday morning. Florida State also announced the news on social media.

“It was truly peaceful,” Terry Bowden said in a text message to AP.

Bobby Bowden announced on July 21 he had a terminal illness that Terry Bowden later said was pancreatic cancer. Bobby Bowden had been treated for prostate cancer more than a decade ago.

He’s one of only a very few of my celebrity sightings where I just happened to see a celebrity outside of a theater. He was yelling at his kid in the restaurant at the Hyatt in Boston. His kid wouldn’t eat his breakfast.

I read late last night that Jimmy Carter might be in the last hours and I've been waiting all day for that.

As Twitter itself explains, an algorithm determines just what can make a subject trend, and these are determined by several factors, including who you follow, what you might be interested in, and where you happen to be. And all that chatter about the number of tweets and retweets? That, according to Twitter, is just one of the factors its algorithm uses to determine whether it's worth of "trending."

This is why when "Jimmy Carter" picked up and started trending on social media, members of the Twitterverse sat up and took notice because, well, you never know. As one Twitter user put it: "I'm going to need Congress to pass legislation that requires Twitter to place a notice saying 'Still alive' next to Jimmy Carter and [actress] Betty White's names every time they trend. I can't handle this kind of stress in my life."

Maki Kaji, a university dropout who turned a numbers game into one of the world’s most popular logic puzzles and became known as the “Godfather of Sudoku,” died on Aug. 10 at his home in Tokyo. He was 69.

His death was announced on Tuesday by the puzzle company he co-founded, Nikoli. The cause was bile duct cancer, the company said in a statement.

In a speech in 2008, Mr. Kaji said he first “fell in love” with a game called Number Place in 1984. He renamed it Sudoku.
