ROME — It wasn't quite a mandate, but the announcement landed with nearly the same power.
After Italy said last week that its coronavirus health passport would be required to go to the movies or dine indoors, daily bookings for inoculations soared. A new kind of patient started arriving at vaccination centers: people who had been wavering or reluctant. In one waiting room in Rome, Federica Puccetti, 19, said she still didn’t want the shot. But she had plans to go to the island of Sardinia. Inoculation had become the path to a normal vacation.
“Otherwise, you can’t do much of anything,” Puccetti said, and then a volunteer told her it was her turn.
In making its health pass a de facto ticket to daily social life, Italy has become representative of the new pressure tactics being deployed in several major European countries at a crucial stage of the pandemic.
Europe is catching up to US in vaccination, and will probably surpass us.

The Provincetown superspreader event occurred because of the nature of Ptown itself.
Located on the tip of Cape Cod it is a tourist mecca for New Englanders. It is connected by ferries to Boston and Plymouth run by several companies capable of handling thousands of people per day.
The first week of July 60,000 visitors jammed into Ptown's narrow streets and filled its bars, restaurants, dance halls and shops. Then those 60,000 ferried back to Boston and on to points north, south and west.
About 95% of the permanent population was vaccinated and so did not wear masks.
Within days reports of cases traced to Ptown started coming in. First dozens then hundreds.

A big difference between last year and this year? I remember being so overwhelming concerned about the health workers last year when there was no vaccine. How many health workers got extremely sick last year? How many died last year? I know the health workers are getting overwhelmed with patients again this year, but I am thrilled that there is now a measure of protection for their own health with the availability of vaccines.
These days I worry that staff will finally, after a year and a half, completely burn out. I've just been told my doctor is quitting, but I haven't found out why. If it's the prospect of a fourth wave, who can blame him? I have no idea how they've kept going up to this point.

Didn't NYC get army field hospitals and staff allocated last year?
Cuomo had the New York National Guard fit out a convention center as spill-over beds for covid, and the Navy sent a hospital ship. (I don't know that it all ended up being used. I got the impression that, because they were so desperate, they tried everything and surprisingly enough worked to turn the tide.)

As I recall, they were going to use the hospital ship for non-COVID patients until there was a COVID outbreak in the patients on the ship. Don't know what happened after that.
I made this part of my argument to people last year. For some reason, many believe these health care facilities and workers are limitless. Fill these places up with un-vaxed COVID patients and then what happens when someone suffers a car accident or heart attack? -- no place to receive them.
Selfish mofos. Screw them -- un-vaxed go to the back of the line!
