Cop stole nude photos from woman’s phone during Missouri traffic stop, FBI tells her

BY KATE LINDERMAN
SEPTEMBER 11, 2024 4:55 PM |

It seemed like a routine traffic stop for a Missouri woman caught in February with the taillight out on her car.

The officer asked for insurance information, so she unlocked her phone to show it to the Florissant police officer, court documents say.

The officer grabbed her phone, without her permission, and took it back to his vehicle, disconnecting it from the Bluetooth associated with the woman’s car, court documents say.

Hoping the officer was “just running her plates or performing other official police business,” she waited 10 minutes for him to return with her phone, according to court documents.

The officer eventually brought the phone back and did not issue her a ticket.

Months later, in July, the woman was contacted by the FBI. Officials shared information with her that led the woman and her husband to file a lawsuit Sept. 6 against the officer that pulled her over and the City of Florissant.

I miss many things about NYC, but sometimes it's a bit of a relief that I no longer live there.

https://balloon-juice.com/2024/09/16/op ... d-wtf-nyc/

Excerpts from a post on the Balloon Juice blog, reorganized:
Meanwhile, what the hell is going on in the Adams administration?

:snippity:

A 49-year-old bystander remained in critical condition Monday, one of two passengers hit by police bullets when NYPD officers opened fire on a subway platform in Brooklyn during a confrontation with an alleged fare-beater a day ago.

The 49-year-old was hit in the head. A 26-year-old woman, another bystander, also was grazed. A police officer was wounded, too. All shots were believed to be fired by the NYPD, authorities have said.

The two officers who opened fire were assigned to patrol the Sutter Avenue subway stop in the 73rd precinct when they spotted a man skip the station turnstile and walk through an open gate toward the train platform, Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey explained at a Sunday evening press conference from Brookdale Hospital.

The uniformed duo followed the alleged fare-beater up the stairs to the elevated L train platform around 3 p.m., when they gave him commands to stop and turn around. Maddrey said during a verbal altercation, they “became aware of a knife.”

Body-worn camera footage, which Maddrey said he reviewed before the press conference, allegedly showed the man make a verbal threat to the officers. He told the cops, “I’m going to kill you if you don’t stop following me,” the chief said.

As the encounter continued to escalate, a northbound L train pulled into the station. The train cars opened and the man jumped inside, according to police.

Maddrey said the officers followed the man, each firing a Taser which proved ineffective in subduing the man. He then exited the train while it was still at the station and charged the officers with the knife, the chief said.

👥 Readers added even more context

What started as the arrest of a fare-beater ended up with four people being shot, all by a single police officer. Yet the early headlines made the public believe there was a shootout on train when that’s not what happened at all.

Then the mayor, the new police commissioner, the head of the MTA, and seemingly other major city official held a press conference to obscure the fact that this was a major screwup and not a subway shootout.

Now have a nice day.

This is cops behaving badly, but also being raided by state cops. All thanks to investigative journalism.
Phil Williams has been doing some amazing work in central Tennessee. This latest saga involves a small town cop, and especially the assistant chief. The asst chief is a major conspriacy nut. He's invited other and more nutty folks to help flush out the rampant human sex trafficking in the area (italics for non-factual nature of the subject).

Additionally, they broke the law by trying to set up a sting to catch people trying to hook up with minors on line. The problem is they totally screwed the pooch on how they went about it.

Good video and article about the whole situation. Williams deserves all the prizes. Also, I'm wondering how an assistant chief in a tiny town of 6200 people can afford the home/property they show from a helicopter as the place is being "raided."

Kentucky Today: Sheriff arrested in shooting death of Letcher County judge:
A judge was shot and killed Thursday afternoon in his courthouse chambers in Whitesburg and the Letcher County sheriff has been arrested, according to reports.

Reports from The Mountain Eagle, a local newspaper in Whitesburg, said Letcher District Judge Kevin D. Mullins was shot and killed, apparently by the Letcher County sheriff.

Officials say Sheriff Mickey Stines was arrested after surrendering to police. The shooting occurred in the judge’s chambers about 3 p.m.

Stines allegedly walked into the judge’s outer office, told court employees and others gathered he needed to speak with Mullins alone. The two then went into the inner office, closed the door and those outside heard shots. Stines walked out with his hands up and surrendered to police.

NYC sheriff probed by DOI over alleged pay-to-play scheme involving law enforcement group he chairs: sources

By Larry Celona and David Propper
Published Sep. 23, 2024, 10:22 p.m. ET

New York City Sheriff Anthony Miranda is under investigation over an allegation he solicited donations for a law enforcement organization he leads in exchange for looking the other way on subjects of enforcement, sources told The Post.

The probe is being handled by the Department of Investigation after a complaint was recently lodged against Miranda, two sources said — as Mayor Eric Adams’ administration has been engulfed in a series of separate federal inquiries.

City investigators are looking into whether Miranda sought donations to the National Latino Officers Association by offering to ignore certain law enforcement issues, according to the sources.

“NLOA represents both uniform and civilian members who are employed by law enforcement agencies on the city, state, and federal level and represents non-law enforcement personnel employed in the private and public sectors,” the association says on its website.

Messages sent to the association’s general email and to Miranda’s listed email were not immediately returned.

City Hall and the DOI also did not immediately return emails seeking comment.

The DOI is also looking into whether the sheriff’s office improperly seized cash from unlicensed pot shops during raids that took place in recent months, the Daily News reported, citing sources.

Miranda said during a council hearing last week he did not believe sheriff’s personnel had seized any cash during the raids.

NYC sheriff’s office searched by DOI as part of probe into Anthony Miranda, illegal pot shop cash seizures: sources

By Joe Marino, Larry Celona, Craig McCarthy and Patrick Reilly
Published Sep. 26, 2024 Updated Sep. 26, 2024, 9:05 p.m. ET

The city’s sheriff’s office in Queens was searched Thursday morning by the Department of Investigation as part of a probe into Sheriff Anthony Miranda and his office’s handling of cash seizures from illegal pot shops, sources told The Post.

The DOI descended on the sheriff office’s Long Island City headquarters after Miranda on Wednesday found an estimated tens of thousands of dollars in cash inside a safe in the building, sources said.

Miranda reported the safe to DOI, according to sources, and investigators from the agency also located a ledger book with pages ripped out alongside the dough.

Investigators are counting the money and taking pictures of the ledger, one source said, adding there was no record of the origins of the cash.

The DOI has been looking into whether the sheriff’s office, under Miranda’s leadership, improperly seized cash from unlicensed pot shops during crackdowns on the illegal businesses in recent months.

Miranda has been in “panic mode,” according to sources, since he told City Council members at a hearing last week he did not believe sheriff’s deputies had seized any money during the raids.
