Did Kari Lake campaign with a pretend combat veteran, hoping to beat a real one?
Opinion: It takes chutzpah for Kari Lake to campaign with a possibly phony combat vet while running against a real one.

Kari Lake had a “meet and greet” on Friday with Steve Slaton at his Trumped Store in Show Low during a campaign swing through northeastern Arizona.

It was, she said, a “magical day,” and I suppose it was.

It’s rare, after all, to see a candidate for the U.S. Senate campaign with a guy who appears to be a pretend combat veteran.

Especially while running against an actual combat veteran.

Slaton campaigns as a combat pilot

Yet there was Lake on Friday, standing arm in arm with Slaton, a Republican legislative candidate who claims he co-piloted an attack helicopter during the Vietnam War.

According to official military records, however, Slaton was a helicopter repairman and crew chief stationed in Korea in 1974. He didn’t even join the Army until June 29, 1973 — fully three months after the last U.S. combat troops left Vietnam.

Should have been 6mo+1day.
Kari Lake Attorney Bryan Blehm Is Suspended From Practicing Law for 60 Days

The man who calls himself Arizona’s “most vocal and active pro-MAGA attorney” and represented election denier Kari Lake’s 2022 bid to contest her failed Arizona gubernatorial run is suspended from practicing law, an Arizona Supreme Court panel ruled Friday.

The panel said Bryan Blehm, who was sanctioned by the Arizona Supreme Court last year in connection with meritless claims he made in Lake’s case, is suspended from practicing law for 60 days, effective July 7.

At a disciplinary hearing held for Blehm in May, attorneys for the Arizona Bar recommended Blehm’s law license be suspended for six months and one day. But the panel on Friday concluded that punishment is “excessive” for a first offense that, while serious, involved “relatively isolated and easily detectable misstatements.”

The panel also said it would have been better equipped to make this determination had Blehm actually appeared for the hearing.

In an apparent act of defiance, Blehm declined to attend the hearing and instead posted a video on X (formerly known as Twitter) of himself sitting inside his vehicle with his dog. “I am by far the most vocal and active pro-MAGA attorney in the state of Arizona. Hands down,” he said, insinuating that the bar association is using its disciplinary efforts to try to prevent him from practicing law around the time of the November election.

Revealed: Trump ally Kari Lake gave speech in front of Confederate flag
Video shows Arizona Senate candidate repeating election-fraud claims at event with Confederate flag behind her

Joan E Greve
Fri 7 Jun 2024 23.34 CEST

The Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake addressed supporters with a Confederate flag displayed behind her during a campaign event at a Trump merchandise store in Arizona last week, where she repeated false claims about election fraud.

In footage obtained by the Guardian, Lake is seen speaking into a microphone, surrounded by a group of supporters, at the Trumped Store in Show Low, Arizona. Behind her, a Confederate battle flag and a yellow “Don’t Tread On Me” flag are affixed to the wall. Both flags are available for purchase on the website of Trumped Store, which sells an array of merchandise with the former president’s name and likeness.

Writing on X last week, Lake described the event as a “magical day”.

“So many incredible patriots in Heber-Overgaard, Show Low and the White Mountains,” she said. “America is stepping up. Arizona is stepping forward. It’s time to save this great Republic. I’m honored to be in this fight with all of these amazing patriots.”

The Confederate flag has long been condemned as a symbol of racism and slavery, and a number of institutions have sought to distance themselves from it in recent years. In 2020, the Mississippi governor, Tate Reeves, a Republican, signed a law to remove the Confederate battle emblem from the state flag, making Mississippi the last state to do so.

Reached for comment about the video, a spokesperson for Kari Lake told the Guardian: “The Kari Lake campaign does not respond to British propaganda outlets. We stopped doing that in 1776.”

Hmmm. On second thought she could be admitting she was alive in 1776; hence the need for extreme filters.

Not a single one of those flags in that picture has been the official flag of any country or, well, anything.

Yes, the "Confederate Flag" wasn't.

:( I'm sad to report that Stephen Richer lost his primary to an election denier named Justin Heap. You can look Heap up on your own, he's another disaster. Finchem and Rogers won too also. Birther-friendly & CyberNinja dude Ken Bennett lost to someone worse. Yuck. Richer wrote a thoughtful post. A fu*king 26% of voters showed up. This is what happens.

It's been a privilege. Thank you.

Elections have winners and, sadly, losers. And in this one, it looks like I'm going to end up on the losing side of the column.

But that's the name of the game. Accept it. Move on.

Congratulations to @azjustinheap on winning the primary (I haven't called him yet to congratulate him because calling him at 7:00 AM seems... unsportsmanlike?).

In my remaining 4 months in office, I will be sure to:

1)

Ensure the continued efficient and lawful execution of my duties in recording, voter registration, and mail voting.

I'm so proud of how my team (@RecordersOffice) did this election. Our voter rolls were in better shape than they've ever been. Mail voting went off without a hitch.

And on the Board of Supervisors side (@MaricopaVote, @maricopacounty), they executed an amazing in-person election yesterday. It was basically serene at the office.

We had over 800k votes in this election.

But we will likely have over 2 million in Maricopa County in November, so buckle up!

2)

Ensure that either @azjustinheap or @TimStringhamAZ has everything he needs to hit the ground running in January 2025.

My predecessor (@Adrian_Fontes) showed grace, class, professionalism, and selflessness in how he handled the transition.

And considering she embodies class and professionalism, I'm sure Helen Purcell did the same.

So I won't be the one to drop the baton!

(Note: one of my friends said the Maricopa County Recorder's Office is basically like teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts. It's cursed. So best wishes to my successor!)

.......................

As for me, I'm excited for whatever comes next. And if it's back in business, out of the spotlight, well ... that sounds just dandy!

I'll likely be writing some longer form stuff in the future. I've subjected you all to some of my longer reports before (in many ways this journey really got going when I wrote my 38-page open letter to Arizona Republicans in 2021). It's something I enjoy, and the last few years have given me a lot to think about in terms of election administration, democracy, politics, humans, etc.

That's for another day, but for my last bit today -- the most important bit -- THANK YOU to the people who worked in my office the past 4 years and the people who supported my political efforts. You're the best.

Onward!

The Democrat in the race, Tim Stringham, will need help and support, but a lot of Republicans have been posting their cool support.

Timothy Stringham
@TimStringhamAZ
Lauren and I decided to make a drastic course correction in our lives in order for me to run for Maricopa County Recorder because we saw this coming even back then.

For all of my Republican friends who are hoping and waiting for the days of the old Republican Party to return - it isn’t. This isn’t a passing phase, this is a new political era.

If you voted for Stephen Richer, I imagine you did so because of his honesty in the face of lies over the last four years.

I’m asking you to continue to vote for the honest candidate.

Consider voting for a Democrat this time around.

Do we know what the percentage of registered Democrats that voted versus the percentage of registered Republicans? I'm probably wishing on unicorns that Republicans just aren't that enthused and maybe won't show up in force fot the general?
