Former Weymouth police officer Justin Chappell, aged 43, pleaded guilty to assaulting a man in his custody by punching him about 13 times without justification.
The incident, which occurred nearly two years ago on July 2, 2022, involved Chappell responding to a call about an allegedly intoxicated man causing a disturbance at a home.
After arresting the man, Chappell punched him repeatedly with a closed fist while trying to place him in the police cruiser, resulting in pain and visible injuries to the man’s head.
Chappell’s guilty plea was for one count of deprivation of rights under color of law, according to federal prosecutors. U.S. District Court Judge Allison Burroughs has scheduled sentencing for July 16.
The charge can lead to a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, up to three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. Sentencing will be based on the U.S. sentencing guidelines and statutes.

In some states, you are not legally obligated to identify yourself to the police.
But, as this video suggests, there may be consequences for not doing so, i.e., the police may take efforts to determine who you are.
Or try to determine who you are not, and stop investigating you. So, for many people, complying with an officer's request for identification may be easier than not honoring the request.
Whether some officers may abuse this for bad reasons is of course possible.

I think over here in Floriduh, we are required to ID ourselves if we are traffic or foot stopped. No ID on them.. Name and d/o/b is enough -- they have computers.
Honestly, unless someone has a want or warrant, why would they refuse? They aren't leaving the detainment .

Excellent thread about a recent case in MS. "Qualified immunity" seems to protect a lot of bad acts committed by cops - if you or I did what they do, we'd get arrested. Too many cops kill or injure people with impunity - because they know they'll get off. It was not always that way - the Ku Klux Klan Act was created to eliminate protection for cops and others committing bad acts under the color of official actions. Very interesting thread.

"Reason articulable suspicion of a crime being committed" is SCROTUS level case law.
This isn't 1939 Germany or 1975 Soviet Union: "papers please" isn't a valid thing in the US.
As much as I detest the 1st Amendment frauditors appearing in our Sovcit thread I hate the Deputy Dawgs that abuse the citizens even more. "DWB" is obscene.

Melrose firefighter used ID of dead man to get job, certification, fed investigators say
WCVB
Updated: 4:57 PM EDT May 24, 2024
MELROSE, Mass. —
A Melrose, Massachusetts, firefighter is facing multiple charges stemming from an identity theft, according to court documents.
The man, whose true identity is unknown and referred to as "John Doe" in court documents, is accused of stealing the identity of man who died over 20 years ago and using that name to apply for a driver’s license and passport, as well as attend the fire academy.
Doe’s passport application was denied after it was suspected he submitted false information, including a birth certificate and a recently issued driver’s license, and an investigation was launched.
It was later determined Doe used information about Henry Huang, a man who died in 2002. Doe is also accused of using the name Truong Nguyen.
Doe was hired as a Melrose firefighter in January 2024 upon graduating from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy. Doe also obtained a Massachusetts EMT-Paramedic certification under the false name in 2023.
The investigation revealed Doe is actually a legal permanent resident of Vietnam, who was ordered deported in 1995 after convictions of larceny and embezzlement, among other charges.
Doe, while using the Nguyen alias, was arrested in 2010 for stealing more than $46,000 from the Norwell Firefighters Union, where he was an officer of the union, according to court documents.

commented videoResidents file complaint that Lafayette Police wrongfully arrest two men without warrant
Vince Martorano
May 24, 2024 Updated May 28, 2024
LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Residents are filing a complaint against the Lafayette Police Department after a wellness check gone wrong. WLFI has obtained video showing multiple Lafayette Police Officers entering the home without a warrant, and arresting people inside for resisting law enforcement.
On May 21, multiple Lafayette police officers entered William Neal's home without a warrant. Neal said the incident stems from a wellness check in which Lafayette police said they had significant reason to believe someone was hurt inside. Lafayette Police confirmed they did not have a warrant.
"We had a call that we need to check on you. You need to come out here. That's not a lawful order," Neal said. "You need to come out here. We need to come out here. That don't make no sense."
Neal said the officer claimed a call was made to 9-1-1 and Neal, his son, and his girlfriend Tammy needed to step outside and speak with officers. Lafayette Police confirm no call was made from the house.
In a statement to News 18, Lafayette Police Chief Scott Galloway said, "Officers had received compelling evidence suggesting a domestic battery and confinement had occurred with persons at the address."
According to Neal, the evidence is a seven-year-old video of a domestic violence situation between Neal's other son, and another woman taking place in another town.
Neal said the son doesn't live in the house anymore. He and his girlfriend were wrongly addressed by the police as the names of the two individuals in the video.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/29/us/m ... tsapp.html‘Did You Tase Him in the Face!?’ Inside ‘Goon Squad’ Deputies’ Group Chat
Years of messages from an encrypted WhatsApp text thread show conversations of sheriff’s deputies, including those who terrorized Mississippi residents.
Between vacation photos and cookout invitations posted on their private text thread, a group of Mississippi sheriff’s deputies who called themselves the Goon Squad traded pictures of rotting corpses and joked about rape and shocking people with Tasers.
They did it all in front of their supervisor, who often joined in the banter.
An encrypted WhatsApp group chat obtained by The New York Times and Mississippi Today provides a yearslong record of the day-to-day conversations of a patrol unit involved in terrorizing residents across a central Mississippi county for a generation.
The Goon Squad came to national attention last year after Rankin County sheriff’s deputies tortured two Black men in their home and shot one of them in the face, nearly killing him. Six officers, including three from the Goon Squad shift, pleaded guilty and were sentenced to federal prison in March.
An investigation by The Times and Mississippi Today last fall revealed that nearly two dozen residents experienced similar brutality when Rankin deputies burst into their homes looking for illegal drugs.
Most of the deputies in the chat have not been charged, and some have not been accused of violence or other illegal behavior. Several deputies said their comments were jokes and denied doing anything illegal. At least nine still work at the department.
The text thread, the contents of which have not previously been reported, shows that for years the deputies chattered routinely about ways to humiliate and brutalize criminal suspects.

I feel like I've seen this before, but I dunno if it is because the video is old or because of a similar incident.

Ok, without defending the Cops behaviour...
That thumbnail on the front looks like it's AI generated and is deliberately provocative. It is not shown in the video that I saw (I admit I fast forwarded through it) All the cops shown were wearing Tee shirts at the very least and had badges, so they were in Uniform. They were not the topless steroided up Viking/Hells Angel types as shown, screaming at the tiny woman who was 3 times smaller than the T-Rex I mean Cop.
One Cop was professional to the mother who came up shouting about her daughter and diffused the situation, which is a always very tense situation to put it mildly.
Second, when half the video is the guy just talking at the screen or talking to a "Civil Rights Lawyer" rather than showing us what actually went on, they are pushing an agenda. And I sampled what he was talking about the cops and how such and such a thing sets them off and basically turns them into animals...
That said there is a lot that the cops did wrong here, but we are not shown what went on before the Car stopped. If the car took off and let them on a chase then their behaviour is more understandable. As Chris Rock said "We all know what happened to Rodney King, but nothing would have happened if Rodney had not run. If the Cops have to chase you, they are bringing a whopping with them." But that's speculation.
If there's more information out there then it would change, but right now it looks to me like a youtube agitator framing this in the worse possible light for his own agenda.

The thumbnail is clickbait, but the video is bad and the cops scared the crap out of them done them dirty for no good reason other than not pulling over fast enough. Which I question, because the cops come up with different stories about it. Would like to see the footage of the "pursuit".
