RE: Traci and Luke at the Grammys -

I played Fast Car during the Super Bowl a couple weekends ago. Love that song, and I love Luke's cover of it. He treated it well.

I'm not a sports fan. Don't watch the games on teevee. Don't read the sports section in the paper. Never watch ESPN. When The Great Annual National Holiday arrives, I generally just read a book or something. This year was different. Our neighborhood includes a number of immigrants that prefer Futbol over the Super Bowl. So, I invited them over for dinner. A half dozen showed up, and among them were two students from Congo. The music was on random rotation of my playlist, and when Traci / Fast Car came on, these two started singing along. The rest of us joined in, and that started a whole round of playing personal favorites with narratives about what these songs meant to them.

Best Super Bowl ever!

To change the world start with one step
However small the first step is hardest of all
Once you get your gait you will walk in tall
You said you never did

'Cause you might die trying
'Cause you might die trying, 'cause you

If you close your eyes 'cause the house is on fire
And think you couldn't move until the fire dies
The things you never did, oh
'Cause you might die trying
Because you might die trying

You'd be as good as dead
'Cause you might die trying
'Cause you might die trying
If you give you, you begin to live
If you give, you begin to live
You begin, you get the world
If you give, you begin to give
You get the world, you get the world
If you give, you begin to live
You might die trying, oh
You might die trying, yeah
You might die trying
The things you never did
'Cause you might die trying
You'd be as good as dead
'Cause you never did

Apologies if I've posted this before. I remember the early days of Heart when they performed Zep at the end of the concert and wham! The Seattle symphony came out as back up.

Last Sunday, the Gospel reading was John 3:14-21 which meant it was time for "God So Loved the World" from John Stainer's work, The Crucifixion. This is one of the standards of the church music world.

One of the other versions out there is by living composer Bob Chilcott. A few years ago, actually in March of 2020, I decided I had the voicing finally to do this version. So, we did. That was the last thing we sang before the lockdown.

I am kicking myself for not recording it because the choir did a wonder full job with it. So, for an example, here is the BYU choir (they are quite good).

In Stainer's larger work there is part of a solo:

"Here in abasement; Crownless, poor, disrobed, and bleeding"

If you don't do it right, it sounds like they sing, "Here, in a basement: crownless, poor, disrobed, and bleeding". That could refer to some of the MAGA except that would be "Here, in mom's basement..."

RIP Karl Wallinger, an underappreciated musician, songwriter, and story teller from Jolly Olde. He didn't quite hit the mark in America, but his work is much better known in the UK. He's had a few chart climbers over there. Here's a sample of his work at KEXP/Seattle in March 2013.

Remember the surreal music in 2001: A Space Odyssey? That was avant-guard composer György Ligeti. He also composed for an organ.

In the opening, where there is no sound, I think the performer presses the keys and then turns the blowers on, which causes the notes to sound slowly and even slide up in pitch as the bellows are inflated. I have used that technique to do a cheesy bagpipe imitation (press the notes for the drone and then turn the organ on so the blowers start and the bellows fill up, much like bagpipers start the air).

The page-turner/stop-puller gets his steps in moving back and forth to press stops. The times they change (you can see them popping in and out), the stop-puller is pressing a piston/button called a stepper. They have programmed the changes so you can do multiple ones with a single button/piston/toe stud which can be helpful as you can do many in a row and don't need to press different pistons.

Jake Shimabukuro puts on a great show at a reasonable ticket price. Highly recommended.

We saw him at a small local theater during the pandemic and had a great time. He constantly your so he should be near you soon.

It's a bit early in the day. So, save this one for later. Like after you've had a pitcher of Slow Gin Fizz.

Fresh St Vincent - Broken Man. About 30 days old. Be the first on your block to listen! Actually see a music video with less than a million views! Hear someone that uses a guitar as an implement. Be astonished how quickly the song ends.

And if you asked yourself "who the hell is St Vincent?", you're in good company. But, now you know.
