Today there has been a flurry of news stories claiming that Angela Chao's death is under "criminal investigation," but not providing any further information. The sources are the Daily Mail, the NY Post, Fox News, and the like, so

Sounds more (to me) like they want to avoid releasing any info to the media. Any unattended or accidental death is investigated as "criminal" until it's ruled out, but meanwhile the cops don't have to say anything since it's an active investigation. Great way to dodge the media.

Well the CT didn't catch fire, so there is that.

I saw an early after the incident tweet by Elmo suggesting the valet was unfamiliar with the power of the CT and lost control . Nope. Hotel shot down that saying the valet station was closed for the evening. It was the owner/driver not a hotel valet.

OpenAI fires back at Elon Musk in legal fight over breach of contract claims
ChatGPT maker releases emails in support of claim Tesla boss backed plan to create for-profit unit

Dan Milmo Global technology editor
Wed 6 Mar 2024 12.30 CET

OpenAI has hit back at Elon Musk’s lawsuit accusing it of betraying its altruistic roots, claiming the Tesla chief executive had in fact supported the artificial intelligence company’s plans to create a for-profit unit.

Executives at the ChatGPT maker released a blogpost containing what they claimed was historical email correspondence with Musk in which the entrepreneur suggested merging the San Francisco-based startup with Tesla.

Musk appears to have said in one 2018 message that OpenAI should attach to the electric carmaker “as its cash cow”, adding in a further email: “Tesla is the only path that could even hope to hold a candle to Google.”

The blog, authored by OpenAI executives including its chief executive, Sam Altman, claims that in 2017 “we and Elon decided the next step for the mission was to create a for-profit entity”.

Last week Musk filed a lawsuit accusing OpenAI, where he was a founding board member, of deviating from its foundational mission by forming a for-profit unit – and putting making money before its core aim of producing technology for the benefit of humanity.

Musk left the board of OpenAI in February 2018 and a year later the ChatGPT developer created a for-profit arm, in which Microsoft is the largest investor – an arrangement that Musk focuses on in his lawsuit.

“We’re sad that it’s come to this with someone whom we’ve deeply admired – someone who inspired us to aim higher, then told us we would fail, started a competitor, and then sued us when we started making meaningful progress towards OpenAI’s mission without him,” the executives wrote.

The company said it intended to seek a court dismissal of Musk’s claim of breach of contract, which has been lodged in a San Francisco court.

German local leftist activists behind this - pictures in the article
Germany: Sabotage case launched against Tesla protesters
A far-left group claimed responsibility for attacking the power grid connected to Tesla's Gigafactory near Berlin. An electricity pylon was the target of arson, turning the lights off for thousands of local households.

March 7, 2024

The public prosecutor's office in the eastern German city of Frankfurt an der Oder has opened a probe into a recent attack on the power grid supplying energy to Tesla's Gigafactory in the Berlin-Brandenburg area by environmental activists camped out near the site.

Office spokesperson Carola Ochs told German news outlet DPA on Thursday that investigations were moving forward after the incident in "all directions" and that it involved the criminal offense of sabotage of infrastructure causing harm to the community.

An electricity pylon in Brandenburg exhibited scorch marks after the attack, with the probe also based on the charges of disturbing public works and arson.

The ensuing power outage temporarily cut electricity for thousands of households in several districts of Berlin.

It's likely to halt Tesla's operations until the end of next week, much longer than originally thought, the company said in a statement late on Wednesday.

Arson attack shuts down Tesla's German plant

Ochs said that Germany's federal public prosecutor was also informed about the case and would have the right to take over the investigation if it wanted to or saw the need.

The far-left extremist "Volcano Group" said it attacked the power grid. However, the exact identities of the perpetrators are still unclear.

Faeser: A 'serious arson attack' which disrupted hospital operations

In separate remarks to dpa, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said the "suspected left-wing extremist action" was a "serious arson attack."

She noted that thousands of residents in the greater Berlin area were left without electricity, and power cuts impacted hospitals and medical operations carried out by doctors.

"We must have a tough response," she said while urging the public prosecutor's office to take action and impose "severe penalties."

The "Volcano Group" claimed the attack was a response to Tesla's treatment of workers and the environment. The Tesla factory in Grünheide intends to expand, drawing concerns from environmental activists that this will threaten the area's forests and water supply.

A report on Thursday by Berlin newspaper Tagesspiegel said that Tesla had consumed 451,654 cubic metres of water over the past year, well under the amount agreed with the local water authority.

$3,000 to enclose your cold, steel truck bed.

I bought a "cabana attachment" for my Honda Element for about $250 IIRC. Of course, the seats in the Element fold down to make two pretty comfy beds, and when you lay down, you're looking up through the sunroof, and out through the tinted side windows, while you get fresh, insect free air through the cabana screen once you've zipped the awning closed. And mine looks just like it did in the catalog.

Tesla is the worst performing stock in the S&P 500. Analysts say it has further to fall

https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/14/investin ... index.html
The once red-hot electric vehicle maker — heralded as part of the so-called Magnificent Seven behemoth tech stocks — is currently the worst performer in the S&P 500 this year, down nearly 32% since January.

The story of Tesla’s (TSLA) decline has been well documented. The company has been plagued by safety issues and recalls, slowing growth and has even been forced to slash prices. But a new report by Wells Fargo analyst Colin Langan on Wednesday offers a darker picture than previously imagined.

Tesla, he wrote, is a “growth company with no growth.”

Langan predicts that Tesla’s growth will remain flat this year and then decline in 2025 as competition increases, deliveries disappoint and the beleaguered auto and tech company is forced to cut prices again.

UBS also downgraded its forecast for Tesla on Wednesday. Analysts said concerns are mounting as demand for electric vehicles slows and as Chinese rivals take an ever greater share of the global market.

Yeah... no.

The initial paragraph from Wikipedia re Ark Invest -
ARK Investment Management LLC is an American investment management firm based in St. Petersburg, Florida, that manages several actively managed exchange-traded funds (ETFs). It was founded by Cathie Wood in 2014. At the height of February 2021, the company had US$50 billion in assets under management. As of October 2023, assets had dropped to $6.71 billion, after a period of poor performance.

Thanks for the heads up on what fund to not invest in. Once upon a time Gregg had a post about why Tesla was so overvalued. I couldn't explain it half as well so I won't try. Things haven't improved for Tesla now that nearly every other car company in the world has started to get into the EV market.

Rear Wheels Breaking Off. “Floppy Wet Noodle” Windshield Wipers. Easily Humiliated by a Subaru. This Is the Cybertruck.
A list of the most disturbing, hilarious, and catastrophic Cybertruck disasters.

Here’s a serious question: Since Tesla’s Cybertruck was officially rolled out to the public on Nov. 30, has it seen a single week without a series of either hilarious or nigh-catastrophic disasters?

It has been four years since Elon Musk botched the exhibition of his company’s first electric pickup truck, by touting “unbreakable,” “bulletproof,” “Armor Glass” windows that broke easily after contact with a metal ball. (The windows being easy to break might have been a good thing, however: As the Wall Street Journal reported recently, the shipping executive Angela Chao died in a tragic accident after she backed her Tesla Model X into a pond and firefighters, police, and paramedics were unable to break the Tesla’s windows and rescue her.)

Having now recovered from myriad parts-sourcing and manufacturing issues, the Cybertruck has seen its belated introduction to prime time greeted with much hype—and worry. It’s not just the overwhelming size and weight of the thing, or its documented struggles in scaling off-road hills, or its sharp, stainless steel edges, all of which could prove fatal in the event of a collision with pedestrians, bikers, or other drivers. Really, it’s … basically everything about this boxy monstrosity. During the November rollout at Tesla’s Texas Gigafactory, tech reporters and other observers made note of the truck’s complicated doors, its floppy and lengthy windshield wipers (which … don’t cover the entire windshield, are rather expensive to replace, and apparently “flop around like a wet noodle”), its windows’ rebranding as “rock-proof” instead of “bulletproof,” and its incredibly faulty anti-crash features. Not long after the event, even more concerning elements came to the public’s attention, in the least ideal way possible: publicly, and dangerously.

Let’s lay out a little timeline here:

• Just a few days after the rollout, a transportation-focused TikTokker posted a popular video showing off the Cybertruck’s alarming “visibility fails,” including the driver’s obstructed front and rear views, and the lack of easy functionality for gear shifts and land-change indicators.

Interesting tidbit I ran across a couple of days ago is that it took over an hour to get Ms. Chao out of her Tesla in the lake because they couldn't break the bulletproof windows.
