For what it's worth, called out the stupid liars who didn't fact check, just shared manipulated video of President Biden in Maui. Millions and millions of people saw the manipulated video. It got a Community Note, but we know fake news spreads infinitely faster than the truth. Took a moment to post LIAR on the top folks listed in the article: Hannity, Anna Paulina Luna, Matt Wallace and Andy Ogles. It's more important than ever to confirm information, this is just going to get worse.

Within a day of Hawaiian authorities releasing 388 names of people unaccounted for following the deadly wildfires on Maui, more than 100 of them or their relatives came forward to say they were safe, the FBI has said.
The agency is reviewing the information provided and working to remove the names from the list.

Louisiana residents told to ‘get out now’ in face of sweeping wildfire
Nearly 1,000 people in Merryville, in Beauregard parish close to Texas border, ordered to evacuate as Tiger Island fire burns nearby

A rare uncontrollable wildfire in Louisiana has forced nearly 1,000 residents to evacuate the town of Merryville in Beauregard parish, near the state’s border with Texas.
“Get out now!” the Beauregard parish sheriff’s office wrote on social media.
The Tiger Island fire started on Thursday in the nearby town of Pitkin and spread quickly. Efforts to extinguish the flames began with the deployment of air water tankers, but local firefighters have not been allowed in the fire area because of the dangerous conditions, according to officials.
The fire remains uncontrolled and “fire containment has decreased from 85% to 50% today due to constant shifting wind conditions and the dry conditions of the vegetation”, the sheriff’s office said on Friday morning.
It is the largest wildfire seen in the state in recent years.
At least one house was destroyed. Hundreds were left without power in the town of Singer, and residents there were asked to conserve water.
Buses were standing by at the town hall ready to transport residents. First Methodist church in DeRidder was established as a shelter for evacuees.
It has not yet been said exactly how the fire started, but the Louisiana governor, John Bel Edwards, urged residents to adhere to the statewide burn ban, which was put in place earlier in August in light of the exceptionally hot and dry conditions.

How 19th-century pineapple plantations turned Maui into a tinderbox
Land privatization and water depletion set the stage for the Lahaina fire 150 years ago. Now, land companies may benefit even more
Claire Wang

In the late 18th century, when the Hawaiian Kingdom became a sovereign state, Lahaina carried such an abundance of water that early explorers reportedly anointed it “Venice of the Pacific”. A glut of natural wetlands nourished breadfruit trees, extensive taro terraces and fishponds that sustained wildlife and generations of Native Hawaiian families.
But more than a century and a half of plantation agriculture, driven by American and European colonists, have depleted Lahaina’s streams and turned biodiverse food forests into tinderboxes. Today, Hawaii spends $3bn a year importing up to 90% of its food. This altered ecology, experts say, gave rise to the 8 August blaze that decimated the historic west Maui town and killed more than 111 people.

Pacific communities planting fire-retardant trees to help prevent another wildfire disaster like Maui
The fires that devastated the Hawaiian island of Maui have shown that rising sea levels are not the only threat faced by Pacific islands.
Key points:
Like in Maui, decades of land clearing in the Pacific have led to the growth of flammable grasses
Planting trees with dense, water-heavy leaves could help prevent a build up of fuel for fires
Indigenous fire practices and other measures are being used to mitigate fire risk amid El Niño

The latest conspiracy flying around is that the Lasers fanning the flames in Hawaii were leaving blue stuff alone, with lots of videos with blue stuff coloured in and everything else grey. So now people are posting videos and pictures of themselves painting their roofs blue.

The people don't want to leave. Some have rooms in hotels. Some move in with neighbors who still have standing homes. Some have tents. Some have families outside of Lahaina. Most of the children have not returned to school.
Some people died with their pets. Recently, a young man and his dog were found, died hugging together.
Sad time.

https://www.civilbeat.org/2023/08/lahai ... k-remains/In a state that has grown accustomed to threats from tsunamis and hurricanes, the disaster in Lahaina is exposing the need for new kinds of vigilance to protect lives, homes and communities.
Fire forecasting organizations are sounding the alarm: There is “above normal significant fire potential” across much of Hawaii through October, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Hawaii’s counties have 96% more “wildfire hazard potential” than other communities in the rest of the nation.
I can't find the article that showed fire hazards across the state. It amazed me that Honolulu is covered with fire potential, including my neighborhood.

Kevin Mccarthy visited somewhere around Lahaina, then a press meeting. The people who lost their homes and jobs received $700 one time. At the meeting, he was asked about continuing the $700. How else can the families buy food, clothing, car & everything else they lost? His response wasn't very well thought out.

‘Symbol of hope’: Lahaina’s beloved banyan shows new growth after fires
A colossal, beloved 150-year-old banyan tree at the centre of Lahaina town that was scorched when deadly wildfires ravaged Maui, Hawaii, last month is showing viridescent signs of new growth.
The tree, which has been described as the “heartbeat of Lahaina Town” was badly singed, but still standing last month after fires killed at least 97 people and reduced much of the historic town to ash.
Since then, arborists have volunteered their time and expertise to save the tree, according to Hawaii’s department of land and natural resources (DLNR) – and have suggested that new leaves sprouting from the tree’s singed branches are a positive sign of recovery.

A fast-moving wildfire fueled by Santa Ana winds in Riverside County grew to 2,200 acres by Tuesday morning with no containment, officials said.
The Highland Fire has already consumed three structures, damaged another six and prompted the evacuation of some 4,000 residents in the area since Monday afternoon.
The fire, which began at Highlands and Aguanga Ranchos roads in the small town of Aguanga, was first reported at around 12:30 p.m. Monday and rapidly expanded in the hot and dry desert winds.
Another fire broke out last night in Riverside County around 10:30 p.m. Monday evening, torching 30 acres on the north side of Mount Rubidoux.
As of 6 a.m. Tuesday, that fire, dubbed the Mission Fire, had been 100 percent contained, officials told KTLA 5’s Carlos Herrera.

This is smoke from the Quaker Run fire, currently burning on the eastern slope of the Shenandoah National Park, on the far side of this ridge. It’s about 20 miles from here as the crow flies, but 50 miles if you had to drive it. The fire has been burning since some time in October. I don’t know when it started - it was burning when we got home from Europe.
This fire has burned almost 3,000 acres so far. The National Park Service is saying that because of the terrain, they don’t expect it to be contained for another couple of weeks, then another couple of weeks to extinguish it entirely.
