Still hanging on to didn't even know. He's earned his place in infamy.
Tuberville, Austin call fails to yield breakthrough on military holds

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) spoke on Tuesday but failed to make any progress on breaking the logjam of nearly 300 military promotions the senator is holding up, Tuberville said.

According to a Tuberville spokesperson, the two officials had “another cordial conversation” and spoke about the planned Senate briefing with Defense officials to discuss the Pentagon’s abortion policy that sparked the fight. The policy allows the department to cover travel expenses for military members to seek abortion care.

The Pentagon and Democrats have been trying to move him off the holds.

“Coach looks forward to the briefing and to further discussions to resolve the situation,” the spokesperson added.

Tuberville told reporters at the Capitol, however, that the talks have yet to yield any progress toward a resolution.

“No, not yet,” Tuberville said. “None. … Just cordial [conversations]. Everybody gives their position and then, ‘Well, let’s talk again.’”

A Defense Department official confirmed the call and said, the “Secretary underscored to Sen. Tuberville the mounting disruption the holds were inflicting on military families, who have already sacrificed so much.”

“Secretary Austin has also explained to Sen. Tuberville, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, that his blanket holds were increasingly harming U.S. military readiness and national security at a critical geopolitical moment,” the official added.

The wit and wisdom of Tommy Tuberville.

“I tell people, my dad fought 76 years ago in Europe to free Europe of socialism.” – Tommy Tuberville

“I’m pro-life. The thing about it – there’s not just Alabama. There’s other states across the country making these tough decisions. And it’s really not a tough decision. It’s about life or death. We’ve killed 60 million babies in the last 45 years – 60 million. I mean, what the heck is going on? People need to open their eyes and just think a little bit about what we’re doing. We’re supposed to be a civilized country. We’re thinking sometimes that we’ve got all the answers. But we got too much government involvement.” – Tommy Tuberville

“Our government wasn’t set up for one group to have all three branches of government — wasn’t set up that way, you know, the House, the Senate, and the executive.” – Tommy Tuberville

“There is not a gun problem. It is a people problem.” – Tommy Tuberville

“It’s concerning to me that a guy can run for president of the United States and have an opportunity to win when he leans more to a socialist type of government, you know, one-payer system in health care, raise taxes 20 percent, when the other half the country is basically voting for freedom, let us control our own lives, stay out of our life.” – Tommy Tuberville

“He (Trump) made a mistake. He said he made a mistake. That’s not, to me, not an impeachable offense.” – Tommy Tuberville

“That’s concerning to me, that we’re to the point now where we’ve got almost half the country voting for something that this country wasn’t built on.” – Tommy Tuberville

“You do have a little bit change of weather. But somebody needs to prove to me that it is because we are burning coal or we have cars driving on the streets.” – Tommy Tuberville

I’m tired of my Senate colleague threatening national security
The people who would be most hurt are our lowest ranking service members and their families.
By Tammy Duckworth, U.S. senator from Illinois

For months now, thanks to one man who has never served in uniform a day in his life, the United States Senate has been failing our troops and military families.

In March, Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., began blocking all senior Department of Defense nominations, protesting a Defense Department policy that helps service members stationed in anti-choice states travel for basic reproductive care. With that decision, my Republican colleague effectively told the country that his own anti-choice agenda was worth jeopardizing our military readiness and our national security.
:snippity:

Let me be very clear: the Defense Department is not funding abortions. It simply allows service members reimbursement for travel if they are forced to make their way to a state with less draconian reproductive policies. There, they can receive a range of health care services, from IVF to, yes, legal abortions.
:snippity:
The GOP’s tantrum over this Defense Department rule redefines the word hypocrisy. I served in the Army, so I know firsthand that Republicans were just fine with me using my body as I saw fit — when I chose to use it to fight wars on our country’s behalf. They were even OK with me leaving parts of it strewn across a battlefield in Iraq in defense of this great nation. Many thanked me for my service — for making that incredibly personal choice about my own life. I know the same is true for other female service members and veterans, too.

So my question is, precisely when do anti-choice folks like Tuberville think that we military women no longer have that basic human right to make our own decisions about our own health?
:snippity:

Tuberville’s tales about his father in World War II have false elements
:snippity:
Five Bronze Stars
This is false. The Bronze Star, the eighth-highest military award, is earned when a soldier “distinguished himself or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service” in combat with an armed enemy of the United States.

Earning five Bronze Stars would be highly unusual; Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier of World War II, earned two Silver Stars and two Bronze Stars, among other medals. About 395,000 Bronze Stars were awarded to the 11,200,000 Army soldiers who fought during World War II, so about three out of every 100 soldiers earned one.

None of the hundreds of pages of after-action reports on the 746th Tank Battalion, from June 1944 to August 1945, lists Tuberville as a recipient of the Bronze Star even as the reports meticulously list scores of soldiers who were either recommended for an award or received one.

Neither his tombstone nor his widow’s memorial notice makes any mention of Tuberville’s earning a Bronze Star, let alone five.
:snippity:

Worth reading the whole thing, WAPO seems very fair IMHO.

Tommy Tuberville is full of shit? Say it ain't so!
Tommy Tuberville pledged to ‘donate every dime’ to veterans. He hasn’t.

“I stand with our veterans and I’m going to donate every dime I make when I’m in Washington, D.C., to the veterans of the state of Alabama. Folks, they deserve it. They deserve it a lot more than most of us.”
— Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), in a Facebook campaign video, March 9, 2020

As senator, Tuberville has made veterans one of his key issues. The former football coach serves on both the Veterans’ Affairs Committee and the Armed Services Committee. He is now in a high-profile battle with the Biden administration over abortion policy affecting veterans. He has stalled the confirmation of more than 250 senior military officers over his objection to a Defense Department policy allowing military personnel and their families to recoup travel expenses incurred while seeking an abortion if they are stationed in a state that bans or restricts the procedure.

Yet there is no evidence that Tuberville has kept a key pledge he made when he ran for Senate three years ago — that he would “donate every dime” he made in Washington to Alabama veterans.

Maybe someone could it explain it to him in terms of that he is benching his entire team, leaving no one to take the field and play the game.
Military logjam worsens as senators leave town with no fix to Tuberville blockade
Members are beginning a five-week recess with hundreds of top jobs in limbo.

Senators flew home for recess Thursday with no solution in sight to Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s (R-Ala.) blockade of military promotions, leaving the Pentagon in an unprecedented predicament: By mid-August, the heads of the Army and Navy are slated to retire with no Senate-confirmed leader to replace them.
:snippity:
The logjam affects more than 270 military officers. They include 10 four-star officers, 54 three-stars, 70 two-stars and 139 one-stars, according to a Senate Armed Services Committee aide. Twenty-one of those three- and four-star officers have had their retirements deferred to ensure continuity of command.

Among the field commanders on hold is Rear Adm. Frederick Kacher, the pick to lead the Navy’s Japan-based 7th Fleet, which oversees naval activities for the Asia-Pacific region. It’s the largest of the forward-deployed U.S. fleets, with 50 to 70 ships and submarines, 150 aircraft and 27,000 sailors and Marines.
:snippity:
Arnold Punaro, a retired Marine major general and former top Armed Services Committee staffer, called Tuberville’s tactics “pathetic.” He sounded a pessimistic note that the senator could be easily convinced to drop the effort.

“It is having an impact,” Punaro said in a POLITICO Playbook interview. “And unfortunately, the only way you can ever prove it to somebody like Sen. Tuberville, who’s never served ... is you’re not going to really be able to prove it to anybody till young Marines and young soldiers die in combat because they’re not as well led.”

Tuberville belongs in a military prison.
Biden escalates clash with Tuberville over military vacancies
Alabama senator has blocked hundreds of military appointments over abortion. Biden says he is torpedoing national security.

President Biden is sharply escalating his criticism of Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville, highlighting his blockade of military nominations and using him to criticize other right-wing Republicans he characterizes as extreme, obstructionist and willing to jeopardize the country’s national security.

Biden, who has often cited Republicans outside the congressional leadership as emblematic of what he calls their party’s radicalism, warned in harsher tones and with more specificity this week that Tuberville is undermining the servicemen and women who are putting their lives at risk.

“Something dangerous is happening,” Biden said Thursday night, speaking at the Truman Civil Rights Symposium. “The Republican Party used to always support the military, but today, they are undermining the military. The senior senator from Alabama, who claims to support our troops, is now blocking more than 300 military [nominations] with his extreme political agenda.”
:snippity:
Biden, arguing that Tuberville is holding America’s military readiness hostage to an ideological agenda, has targeted Tuberville with growing frequency in recent weeks, mentioning him at fundraisers and in economic addresses and tweets. He often highlights the impact of Tuberville’s blockade in general terms, but on Thursday night got more specific.

The president noted that Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., an F-16 pilot and the first African American to lead any branch of the Armed Services, will become the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff if Tuberville lifts his hold. Adm. Lisa Franchetti, the second woman in the Navy to achieve the rank of four-star admiral, would make history as the first woman as chief of naval operations.

“Tens of thousands of America’s daughters and sons are deployed around the world tonight keeping us safe from immense national security challenges. But the senator from Alabama is not,” Biden said. “For the first time in more than 100 years, we don’t have a sitting confirmed commandant of the Marine Corps.”

Tuberville’s blockade, he said, is harming military readiness and troop morale, while disrupting the lives of hundreds of top personnel who do not know if their promotions will go through and if they will need to move their families. Biden decried “a growing cascade of damage and disruption, all because of one senator from Alabama — and 48 Republicans who refuse to stand up to him to lift the blockade.”

I think the Vice Chief of Staff for the Army, the Vice Chief of Naval Operations, and the Assistant Commandant of the Marines Corps fill in as acting chiefs in the absence of the chief in their service. Knowing the military, they probably have a longer list of who will act as a chief if you don't have a Chief or Vice Chief.

All this said, the Joint Chiefs do not have command authority. Command authority passes through the Secretary of Defense to the commanders of the Unified Combatant Commands. Luckily, it appears that most have entered into their role in the last year or so. Hopefully, they can get Tubberville to stop f****** around with our military before they start having openings.

No Space Command for Alamaba. Good job, Tommy (granted, the move there may have been as much a Trump whim as anything so anybody who says the reversal was just politics, well, it was Trump games).

Tuberville is on Guilfoyle's show. He said we have 44 four star generals now, when we only had 7 in WW2, so we are top heavy anyway. What a jerk.

He's on at about the 30min mark or so.

No... Yes, we may be up to WW2 numbers, but they had more than 7. In April 1945, there were four 5-stars and thirteen 4-stars (that includes Army Air Corps). that makes 17, not 7.

We have something like 14-16 army generals right now and around 41 4-stars in all services.

There are statutory limits
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_a ... r_officers
...statute sets the total number of four-star officers allowed in each service. This is set at eight four-star Army generals six four-star Navy admirals, nine four-star Air Force generals, two four-star Marine generals, two four-star Space Force generals, and two four-star Coast Guard admirals.

You may notice we are above the limit on at least Army Generals, but there is an exception in that somebody in a joint role does not count against the 4-start number. Those include the Chair and Vice-Chair of the joint chiefs and the commanders of the Unified Combatant Commands.

He is such a prick.
