X is the future state of unlimited interactivity – centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we’re just beginning to imagine.
Why - you already have that one cornered by your owner, he will not let anyone bypass him on inventing something more simple than an X. Nor will any inventors use that place to have their ideas stolen by Elmo. :twisted:

The form is just too common looking that as a standalone item it has qualities that could ask for a special treatment. It could have been devised by any other designer in a "cleanroom" attempt.
Which is also why it is such a terrible logo. If it is so generic looking that people can not figure out if you stole it or not, then it isn't exactly distinctive or memorable.

In addition to their signage issues*, there may be some trademark problems ahead. I'm hoping Mike Dunford will chime in at some point.

*as to signage permits, I had to go through the process back in 2007-2008 when my company moved from Sunnyvale to San Jose. It was an incredibly drawn out process involving the Building Dept, design review committees, the planning commission, and, in our case, a grant committee, because grants were available, I'm cheap, and signage is freaking expensive. (a 2-sided monument sign & 3-d building sign together (neither illuminated) ran over $14k) it took about 4 months in SJ, and I have to figure San Francisco is at least as strict.

Things I don’t understand:
Marketing / Branding and Elon Musk.
TWITTER and the BIRDIE Logo are highly recognizable and unambiguous (except perhaps among ornithologists).
On the other hand X regardless of typeface tweaking is the very essence of ambiguity (Let X = unknown).
So Musk has this brand which though it may be perceived as toxic by folks on both extremes of the political spectrum for different reasons, but which the vast majority of ‘normies’ perceive as positive or at least neutral and he has decided to change it to something with no meaning in the space he wants to dominate and whose only asset IMHO is brevity.
Is he really the smartest guy in the room?

A normal person who’s been obsessing over a brand for at least a decade (X) would build that time into his plans. I guess edgelords don’t have to do that shit. He’ll pay the damn fines.

I don’t like edgelords.

He may have some fines to pay, but until he goes through the process, no signage for him.

That's terrific about the TM. Maybe Meta will just let him have it. :P

Not only is the X logo terrible (totally blends in on Chrome tabs, the blue was so noticeable), but PayPal wouldn't change it to X because focus groups absolutely saw it as a porn site name. Which is true in a way -- since Elmo, every single day I get 1-3 follows from female escorts, e-girls and chaturbate girls. They are easy to spot, they follow hundreds and only get a few followers. It was nowhere like this in Twitter 1.0.

Based on the last few months, hard pressed to think how anyone who had intentionally planned to destroy Twitter would have done anything different. Another nail for the Elmo coffin (NADT).

I saw a post? Tweet? something, earlier that said the only "valuable" asset twitter had at this point was the recognizability of it. I can believe that. I can also believe Musk knows that and doesn't give a shit.

Orly, me too. For a while I had 2-3 per day along with Xtianists.

I got suspended again on my new account this morning for about 20 minutes. No ideas why, I’ve been careful not to call anyone a bimbo this time- or any names for that matter. I could read but not post or retweet. And then I could and the banner over my account went away. I’m pretty sure it was a glitch during the X-ification. 🙄

When you're rich, they let you grab them by the Twitter.

Here on the North Fork the sign laws are both complex and strict.

Back when a McDonald's opened in Mattituck the building couldn't look like a McDonald's and the golden arches were limited to a 3' x 3' sign hard to see from the road. No drive thru was allowed.

When the Modern Snack Bar went to replace its collapsing iconic 1950s era lighted sign with a new one that looked identical they were told they couldn't. Massive public pushback got that decision overturned. ;)

The city wouldn't allow golden arches in Sedona. Looks like they snuck in a flag though!

Interesting thread by a member of the design team for the recently-cancelled twitter logo:

https://twitter.com/martingrasser/statu ... 8602010624
Today we say goodbye to this great blue bird

This logo was designed in 2012 by a team of three.
@toddwaterbury
,
@angyche
and myself,

The logo was designed to be simple, balanced, and legible at very small sizes, almost like a lowercase "e", a 🧵

Pretty sure that was the idea. Can't have chain fast food restaurants spoiling the North Fork ambiance. ;)

The Information Dirt Road (my BBS during the 80's and 90 preinterwebs)

It was my annual April Fools joke to send my users a bill for their use of the Capital letters T I D & R in their messages. I claimed I had a script that could count those letters in all their messages over the past year, do the calulation, and generate a bill. I wanted one mille per use (a tenth of a penny). In actuality the script just pumped out random numbers, and each time they logged in on 4/1, they saw a different total. It was good for a giggle.
