I know this will make me sound like some kinda old man luddite, but there's not a bit of "electronica" that can match the sound of a tubed electric/bass guitar amp.

You're not a Luddite. I've heard this argument before. I apparently don't have the ear to tell the difference, and I consider myself a connoisseur of fine noise. Despite decades of addressing poor audio quality issues in telephone and radio calls, I entirely miss the extra something that tubes bring to high fidelity audio.

And that's not to say I doubt anyone can hear these differences. I'm confident they can. I have on many occasions tried to point out the obvious issue I'm hearing over the air to one person, or several people at once, and they are giving me Orphan Annie eyes because they can't hear it, or more correctly - they can't discern it.

It's clear as a bell to me, but all they hear is irritating unitelligible audio. They can't separate the interference from the desired voice. So, the whole envelope stabs them in the brain. Literally some people experience pain because they have a headset on, and the crap is getting pumped directly into their ear. But they can't filter it in their mind. Resolving it made me their hero for a day.

I have a ton of stories about noise.

The first couple of generations of MP3s I heard of Led Zeppelin's Gallows Pole were missing the banjo. Ugh.

I just put this back into service for the winter a couple of weeks ago. This isn't a recent photo but I've had this amp for 20 years. Currently, it's running Gold Lion KT77's but one of them started at very low voltage while I was setting the bias so replacements may be in order. Those are about $340 for a matched quad.

So, yeah, count me in as a tube guy too.

That's wild. The banjo is right out front. The mandolin is more subdued buried behind the lead guitar. But when the bajo kicks in, it's obvious.

Wow. Pretty. I had a Macintosh and a University tube amps back in the 80's. They got left behind when we moved to Oregon along with just about everything else. If it didn't fit in the pickup, it didn't come with us.

Those old Macintosh amps will do. So will the new ones for that matter. This amp is an early Cayin TA-30 from before they had wider distribution in the U.S. The inside is all point to point wired except for small circuit boards for the internal bias pots. Mine has been modified with external bias adjustments and higher grade foil capacitors. It's an incredibly nice little amp.

The Mac was a monster. Chrome steel frame with black paint shields. Huge transformers. No volume control except for a screwdriver input level set pot. RCA jacks for the input, barrier strip for the speakers. Heavy as hell. I joked it took three strong men and a boy to carry.

As opposed to the University made from stamped aluminum in a Tektronix blue case. At least half the weight of the Mac and claimed similar specs. I couldn't tell the difference. But I only took the University to parties.

This is a machine I built to calculate square roots. It uses only electromechanical relays like the early computers of the 1930s. There are 480 of them, each with a light that you can watch on the front panel. No micro controllers in sight!
