Polish Town fair is canceled again this year

The Polish Town Fair and Street Festival has been canceled again this year, a representative of the Polish Town Civic Association, which sponsors the fair, told RiverheadLOCAL today.

Joyce Bressack, acting president of the Polish Town Civic Association, said the fair won’t be back this year.

“It’s unfortunate,” Bressack said. “It’s sad.” She did not provide an explanation and couldn’t say whether the group would try to hold the street fair next year. That decision has to be made by the civic organization’s board of directors, Bressack said.

The iconic Riverhead street fair first took place in August 1975 continued through its 45th annual event in 2019. It was canceled by COVID in 2020 has not returned. Civic association officials said in 2021 pandemic restrictions were not lifted early enough in the year to allow the group to apply for the required permits and line up vendors.

Last year, the death of event chairperson Kay Davis in February was followed by a flood in the civic’s association headquarters required extensive remediation, according to the group’s treasurer Rob Gottschalk. That made planning the fair impossible.

Gottschalk said last June the event would return in 2023. The group did not file an application with the town seeking a permit to host the event, Riverhead Town Clerk Diane Wilhelm said last month. Gottschalk did not respond to a phone message earlier this month.

But that day must take us through at least 3 of the 5 boroughs of New York City.

Greetings from the North Fork where it is 39F just now.

We arrived here Thursday after a miserable drive from PA.

As soon as we reached the NJ side of the GW Bridge we crawled almost all the way to the North Fork. Every major LI highway was full of folks getting an early start to the Memorial Day week. Took twice as long as usual.

Friday the plumber, who was supposed to give us 30 minutes warning before arriving, showed up at 7:45 am with no warning. We scrambled. At least the water is on.

Happily our handyman was able to come yesterday afternoon so all of the shutters are open and most of the screens are up.

Got a takeout pizza and salad from our favorite local Italian restaurant last night.

I am going back to bed now.

Perfect late Spring North Fork weather today. High of 72F. Humidity 50%. No wonder the crowds are out.

Our lawn sprinkler system gets turned on this Tuesday.

Our handyman returns later this week to replace some rotting boards on the deck then clean and stain it.

Mrs. V has already sat down and spoken with her garden club cousin about which plant shops have the best perennials and prices.

Will try to take it easy today. Put up the lower porch decorations. Set up the radios so I can listen to WLNG Oldies 92 both upstairs and downstairs. Get the laptops set up. No more big desktop in my upstairs office. The tower is now too heavy for me to get upstairs so it stayed in Texas.

Yesterday the lawnmowers where running but so far today it is quiet.

It is early in the season now so all the summer folks want work done ASAP. The vendors are rushing to get as many paid jobs in as possible.

Traffic here today is terrible. Mrs. V has abandoned plans to go to the supermarket today.

The local Italian restaurant and the bagel shop will feed us.

Lawn service has arrived for one of our neighbors. Sigh.

There was a time when workers took holiday weekends off or at least stopped work early. Not now.
