Mnuchin to head US delegation to World Economic Forum in Davos
PUBLISHED WED, JAN 1 20207:33 PM EST
Reuters

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will lead a group of U.S. officials who will attend the World Economic Forum later this month in Davos, Switzerland, the White House said Wednesday.

Mnuchin will be joined by officials including Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Labor Secretary Eugene Scalia,
Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and White House senior advisors Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.

Also attending will be Keith Krach, a State Department under secretary for growth, energy and the environment, and
Christopher Liddell, a White House deputy chief of staff.

Reuters reported on Dec. 17 that President Donald Trump planned to attend the annual Davos economic forum, citing a
source familiar with the plan. A White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Wednesday that Trump is still expected to attend at this time.

In 2019, Trump had to cancel his plan to attend the annual gathering of global economic and world leaders due to a
government shutdown. He attended the Davos forum in 2018.

Trump’s appearance in Davos on January 21-22 will mark his first foray onto the world stage since he authorised the US military to kill Iran’s top military commander.

It will also be Trump’s first trip outside the US since becoming only the third American president to be impeached, and the first one to carry that mark into a re-election campaign.

Trump will address the gathering about two weeks before the first rounds of voting in the process to determine his Democrat opponent in the November election.

how things could get interesting
Iran’s Zarif to Attend 2020 Davos Forum, Swiss Paper Reports
By Catherine Bosley
January 7, 2020, 7:59 AM GMT+1 Updated on January 7, 2020, 9:31 AM GMT+1

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will attend the World Economic Forum in Davos this month, according to a Swiss newspaper, potentially setting the stage for a clash with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Tuesday’s report in the Tages-Anzeiger cited organizers of the event, and said that Zarif explicitly confirmed his attendance after the U.S. killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani near Baghdad airport last week. Iraqi President Barham Salih will also be in Davos, the paper added.

With Trump expected to attend, three of the main protagonists in the current flareup of Middle East tensions would be present at the Jan. 21 to Jan. 24 conference in the Swiss ski resort.

Concerns are mounting that Iran will seek to avenge the assassination of Soleimani, who led proxy militias that extended Iran’s power across the region, by striking at U.S. interests and those of its allies. Iran’s Supreme Leader has threatened “severe retaliation.”

not tired of winning
America is winning, declares Trump

Richard Fletcher, Davos
January 21 2020, 12:00pm, The Times

President Trump attacked the Federal Reserve and the “prophets of doom” — interpreted as referring to Greta Thunberg

President Trump has declared that the American dream is back “bigger, stronger and better than before”.

Speaking at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, he argued that “America is thriving, America is flourishing and, yes, America is winning again.”

Mr Trump claimed that the United States was “in the midst of an economic boom the likes of which the world has never seen before” as he reeled off a long list of statistics about job creation and investment. In the third quarter of last year the US economy grew by 2.1 per cent, below the historic average.

“We are no longer simply concentrating wealth among the few. We are developing an economy that works for everyone,” he said.

Trump, climate change icon Greta Thunberg lay out starkly different visions

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/trum ... d_ms_tw_ma
President Donald Trump and teen climate change activist Greta Thunberg presented starkly differing visions of the challenges facing the Earth at the World Economic Forum on Tuesday — one optimistic, the other an ominous warning for the future.

Speaking just after Trump at the gathering of world business and political leaders in Davos, Switzerland, Thunberg rebutted the one environmental policy the president mentioned in the address on Tuesday — a plan to join the Trillion Trees Initiative.

“Planting trees is good of course, but it is nowhere near enough of what is needed,” said Thunberg, whose solo "Fridays for Future" school strikes triggered a global phenomenon drawing millions to the streets to protest climate inaction.

:snippity:

"We’re not telling you to offset your emissions by just paying someone else to plant trees in places like Africa, while at the same time forests like the Amazon are being slaughtered at an infinitely higher rate,” Thunberg said.
It must infuriate Trump to share a headline with a Swedish teenager.

Trump Davos 2020: US president's speech fact-checked

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-51192999 ... ow_twitter
Claim: "The United States has among the cleanest air and drinking water on Earth."
Reality Check: Mr Trump has praised his administration's policies for improving air and water quality in the US before.

However, his critics point to steps that reverse environmental protection and to America's intended exit from the Paris climate agreement.

Air quality in the US ranks as 10th best in the world, according to the Environmental Performance Index, created by researchers at Yale and Columbia universities.

:snippity:

Reality Check: The annual rate of growth in gross domestic product (GDP) - the value of goods and services in the economy - has been between 2% and 3% under Mr Trump. But under President Clinton, the annual growth rate was higher - reaching over 4%.

One thing impotus may have forgotten, his audience was not a drumpf rally, but a collection of well versed politicians and well educated economists with the correct numbers immediatly at hand. Did he ignore the advice from his speech writers and go off script with glamorous Fake Facts?

Is this off-topic? You can see what Greta Thunberg is complaining about. Once the rockets go up, who cares where they come down, as Tom Lehrer said.
The oil-rich nation [Norway] claims the Johan Sverdrup field, which was opened with pomp by the Prime Minister last week, is helping to "reduce emissions" because it is completely powered by renewable energy.

Its Trump vs Thunberg at Davos! Let's go to the applausometer-

At Davos, Visions of Trump and Thunberg Clash

https://www.courthousenews.com/at-davos ... erg-clash/
During this speech full of descriptions about American greatness and his own, Trump offered one environmental solution: He said the United States is joining an initiative being launched this year at Davos to plant 1 trillion trees.

Up to this point, the audience had been silent, frosty. Now, applause, polite and hesitant at first, broke out.

But the applause was over as quickly as it started, and the room fell back into stony silence as Trump moved on and said “the perennial prophets of doom” must be rejected.

:snippity:

Shortly after Trump spoke, Thunberg delivered her remarks – and they were strikingly different and drew a lot more applause.

I saw some video of his speech at Davos. Same low-energy, drugged, semi-coherent delivery. I couldn't tell if his eyes were dilated.

I'm too tired to ridicule this, so I'll just put it here and note that in a day at Davos he's called America "a developing nation" and said he doesn't think the military folks being treated for head injuries have anything serious and it's just a headache. And Rube Nation cheers.

The second article of impeachment was for obstruction of Congress: covering up witnesses and documents from the American people.

This morning the President not only confessed to it, he bragged about it:

It’s interesting that the Climate Change deniers oppose science in this area, but want their medical doctors to have a science background. :cantlook:

As Swiss summit ends, Greta's star outshines her critics

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-davo ... ce=twitter
If making headlines and drawing flak is a measure of success at Davos, then Greta Thunberg probably came out on top of this year’s edition of the Alpine business-meets-politics gathering.

The 17-year-old climate activist has already attended the World Economic Forum twice. She and her team have shown themselves adept at shaping the debate, even managing to turn criticism from the U.S. treasury secretary to her advantage.

This year’s program was weighted toward discussion of the climate crisis, partly reflecting Thunberg’s rising global influence as well as the deepening concerns of big business.

As the summit wrapped up on Friday, Thunberg lead a protest with young people in the center of Davos, flagging her message to the end, after most world leaders had left.
