‘We have tapped into something’: Impeachment drive builds digital army to take on Trump

SAN FRANCISCO — When billionaire Democratic donor Tom Steyer launched a digital petition drive to impeach President Donald Trump two months ago, some Democratic Party leaders dismissed it as an unhelpful vanity project — and even Steyer thought he’d top out at a million signatures.

But nearly four million digital signatures later, the philanthropist and environmental activist’s unlikely campaign has seized on an issue — impeaching Trump — that could become part of the Democratic mainstream in 2018. It's placed at his fingertips a potentially powerful tool: an email list of millions of motivated activists who he can reach instantly for organizing and fundraising and that could become the hottest trove of data in Democratic politics since the email list that Bernie Sanders’ insurgent campaign against Hillary Clinton collected in 2016. ...

Campaign experts say Steyer’s petition drive is breaking new ground in digital organizing in the nontraditional political terrain of the Trump era, though it’s been anchored by an traditional media onslaught — national television ads that have been running nonstop since Oct. 20. So far, 3.73 million people have signed on to Steyer’s NeedToImpeach.com drive, which has brought his message into the living rooms of millions of average Americans.

An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released this week showed that 41 percent of Americans now back impeachment hearings — higher than the percentage that would support Trump in a 2020 election. And in a recent vote, 58 House Democrats backed Rep. Al Green’s call for impeachment — a dramatic shift from the two who supported impeachment at the start of Steyer’s drive in October.

Steyer himself admitted shock at the avalanche of grassroots support for Trump’s impeachment in a recent interview, amid clear disapproval from Democratic party leaders like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, who have suggested that it distracts from the party’s agenda. “We have tapped into something much larger than we thought,’’ Steyer said in a recent C-SPAN interview. He says he’s upped his original goal of one million now to 5 million signatures.

Tom Steyer bought a copy of "Fire and Fury" for every member of Congress

Washington (CNN) Democratic mega-donor and billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer bought every member of Congress a copy of Michael Wolff's controversial book "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House," he told San Francisco news outlet KQED on Friday.

"Judging by the excerpts, we went and bought 535 copies, and we're going to get citizen volunteers to deliver them to the office of every Congress person and senator," Steyer said. ...

Steyer spent $20 million on national television and a digital ad campaign calling for Congress to impeach Trump, telling CNN's Dana Bash in November that "it's very important and urgent that we get him out of office."

Steyer did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment Saturday.

Amen.
And I would like to point out that (1) Mike Pence is next in line - a real ideologue, with few vulnerabilities, and (2) Mitch McConnell and the other Republicans still want to repeal ACA, close down the EPA, and all that stuff.

Newsweek
Trump Impeachment House Parties Planned Across U.S. Ahead Of Presidents Day

A campaign to impeach President Donald Trump announced on Monday it will hold house parties in more than 500 communities across the U.S. the weekend before President’s Day to pressure Congress to remove him from office.

“Americans across the country are sending a clear message to members of Congress: we’ve had enough,” Tom Steyer, a Democratic billionaire who founded the Need to Impeach campaign, said of the new Party to Impeach initiative planned at big cities and small towns on February 17.

“Our elected leaders in Washington D.C. can no longer neglect their Constitutional obligation to remove this unfit President from office,” Steyer stated in an emailed press release. “Their lack of accountability has awakened millions of people to their failure to protect the safety and stability of our country and everyone who lives in it.”

Since Steyer launched the Need to Impeach movement last October on television and social media, more than 4.3 million people have signed a petition demanding Congress to begin proceedings to remove Trump. The campaign is using President’s Day to draw attention to the growing demand.

Doesn't seem to me to make much sense except one invites the House and Senate representatives to join the party and get an earful of the anger. But they already know how those townhall meetings turn out for them and will skip for highter duties...

Perhaps you're taking it at face value too much? The parties are an excuse for like-minded people to get together, have some fun, confirm that they are not alone in this ongoing nightmare, reduce the feeling of powerlessness, make a general statement to others (on both sides), perhaps get some ideas for what to do next, etc. Rather like the recent Women's Marches.

So true. What will save us is voter turnout in the midterms, which will happen only if we have exciting ideas and candidates.

Billboard calling for Trump’s impeachment will go up near his Mar-a-Lago resort

A billboard calling for President Donald Trump’s impeachment will soon be propped up near his resort Mar-a-Lago in West Palm Beach.

The sign, which says: “Impeachment now, Make America America Again!” will tower over Interstate 95 from March 19 to April 15— about two miles from Trump’s property on East Shannondale Road, according to Mad Dog PAC, the left-wing organization that’s funding the sign.

The political action committee is known for installing controversial billboards across the country that target Republican politicians.

Recently the organization funded one in Pensacola that read, “The NRA is a terrorist organization.” <SNIP>

Politico
McAuliffe: ‘We ought to look at’ impeachment of Trump

Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said Sunday that lawmakers should consider whether to impeach President Donald Trump, who he said has been “bear-hugging” Russian President Vladimir Putin while the foreign leader attempts to undermine U.S. democracy.

“I think that's something we ought to look at,” the Democrat said on CNN’s “State of the Union“, when asked by Jake Tapper whether Trump should be impeached.

“If President Clinton or President Obama had gone to Helsinki and done what President Trump had done, you would already have impeachment hearings going on,” he said, in reference to a news conference alongside Putin where Trump appeared to give equal weight to the findings of the American intelligence community that Russia meddled in the 2016 election and to Putin’s denial of that fact.

The U.S is battling Russia on multiple fronts, McAuliffe said, citing Ukraine and Syria.

“There has to be a reason, Jake, why he is over there acting the way he acts about Putin, then inviting them here, and then saying he may go over there,” he said. “Do not forget that they came into the 2016 election, they came in and tried to destroy the greatest democracy in the world.”

Newsweek
Brett Kavanaugh Has ‘Energized’ Donald Trump Impeachment Petition As It Nears 6 Million Signatures

A campaign pushing for President Donald Trump to be impeached has received a big boost from the controversy plaguing his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

The Need to Impeach campaign received 10,882 signatures on its online petition urging Congress to begin impeachment proceedings against Trump on Wednesday alone, thanks to advertisements it ran against Kavanaugh, the campaign’s lead strategist Kevin Mack told Newsweek on Thursday.

There was a roughly 20 percent increase in petition signers in the past week compared to the previous week, campaign spokesman Erik Olvera said. The anti-Kavanaugh ads have helped the campaign, which usually gets 3,000 new signers per day, come very close to reaching six million signatures.

The campaign has run just over 200 different ads against Kavanaugh on social media since July 10, according to Olvera. Some of the ads have centered on a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in which Christine Blasey Ford detailed allegations that she was sexually assaulted by Kavanaugh at a high school party in the 1980s. Kavanaugh has denied the allegations and played down his drinking habits as a teenager.

Impeach Donald Trump

https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/ar ... mp/580468/
Instead, he has mounted a concerted challenge to the separation of powers, to the rule of law, and to the civil liberties enshrined in our founding documents. He has purposefully inflamed America’s divisions. He has set himself against the American idea, the principle that all of us—of every race, gender, and creed—are created equal.

This is not a partisan judgment. Many of the president’s fiercest critics have emerged from within his own party. Even officials and observers who support his policies are appalled by his pronouncements, and those who have the most firsthand experience of governance are also the most alarmed by how Trump is governing.

:snippity:

More troubling still, Trump has demanded that public officials put their loyalty to him ahead of their duty to the public. On his first full day in office, he ordered his press secretary to lie about the size of his inaugural crowd. He never forgave his first attorney general for failing to shut down investigations into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, and ultimately forced his resignation. “I need loyalty. I expect loyalty,” Trump told his first FBI director, and then fired him when he refused to pledge it.

Trump has evinced little respect for the rule of law, attempting to have the Department of Justice launch criminal probes into his critics and political adversaries. He has repeatedly attacked both Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Special Counsel Robert Mueller. His efforts to mislead, impede, and shut down Mueller’s investigation have now led the special counsel to consider whether the president obstructed justice.

After reading that article, James Fallows himself has jumped aboard the impeachment train. I'm joining him. There is no reason not to start the process, is there? If that process serves to put the brakes on some of trump's more egregious activities, that alone is enough reason to start the ball rolling.

Rasmussen: Voters Say Illegal Immigration, Health Care Are Congress’ Priorities:
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 29% of all Likely U.S. Voters believe illegal immigration is the issue the new Congress should deal with first, closely followed by 24% who want to emphasize health care. Seventeen percent (17%) think the focus should be on President Trump’s impeachment.

I'm surprised it's that high for impeachment in a Rasmussen poll. They always tend to lean right.
