We count our early votes as they arrive, and that total is released the minute the polls close. So if Ohio goes for Biden at the end of the night, that wrecks every path Trump has to win. No chaos, no battle to the death cage match, Ohio goes blue, its over.

Trump might not accept it, but everyone who matters will.
But, Ohio permits absentee ballots to continue to arrive and be counted up until Nov 13th (so long as they are postmarked by Nov 2nd). Thus, if it's close and there are still a lot of ballots not returned on Nov 3rd, they may not be able to declare a winner.

Here in Florida, the mail ballots must received by 7pm Nov 3rd (regardless of postmark), so Florida has a better chance of announcing a state winner on election night. (yeah, yeah, I know... Florida -- good odds we will F-it up yet again)

Does Florida open and count them as they arrive? There are some states where they don't even begin opening the envelopes until the polls close and that is the single biggest time crunch on absentee ballots, because before they can be opened, in some states, the signature must be verified and who knows what else Republican county level phucktwits can do to slow it down, which allows the national party to take advantage of the impending chaos.

In Ohio, mail in ballots are opened, verified then the identifying tab that allows a ballot in the envelope to be traced to a certain voter is removed, the envelope is opened in the presence of a Republican and Democrat appointed by their parties to do so, and fed into the computer to be counted. The machines are checked every night from when the process starts till election day that the total number of ballots fed into it matches the number of envelope tabs that were removed and those tabs are matched to the master voter roll as having voted, so they cannot get another ballot on election day.
The machine, meanwhile, has the vote totals and on election day, as soon as the polls close, the totals are announced and then updated as the in person ballots come in. At the end of election night, they may be too close to call, but we will at least know that, because they will know how many mail in ballots were sent out, how many have been returned and how many of those people showed up to vote in person instead (provisionally).

In Ohio. In some other state, as I said, they could, if they tried, drag it out a month.

No matter what, though, the Electoral College votes on December 14th, so it can't go beyond that.

Since ballots are being counted as they're received, what is there to prevent leaking this data ahead of Election Day?

As of Oct 12, Florida counties were able to start scanning-in and counting/tabulating (but not releasing candidate totals) the returned mail-in ballots. So, yes, we will have everything scanned-in Nov 3rd and counted.

But, again, it is Florida. :?

Travis County, Texas has registered 97% of its eligible voters. https://thehill.com/homenews/520908-tex ... stered-for

Let that sink in. What's in Travis County? Austin and UT.

The computer is tabulating them, but it won't show the totals until a time programmed before the election starts, and when it does, it takes a password from one Republican and One Democrat chosen by the party to show them.

That is good, so Florida and Ohio will be able to release substantially complete counts on election day, Bob willing the the creek don't rise.

Ohio and Florida saying they have heavy counts favoring Biden (because even if they have counted 99% or the possible mail ins already the networks aren't gonna say so) sinks Trump. If he loses Ohio and Florida, its over.

It will be imploded altogether in January.

Still nobody for the "Assumes Room Temperature" option? I thought I'd get at least one.

And anyone else here trying to keep from talking themselves into believing he never had Covid and has co-opted the hundreds of people at least it would take to lie about it?

Cause I'm trying to figure out if it could be done.

If it could be done, he damn sure did.
