Jimmy down the hall would be the safe bet, but I'm going to go out on a limb and vote for the Walrus. I get the sense he's no longer hawkish enough for the OSG and will be asked to step aside soon.

Don't know who Esper is or if he has a chance of getting nominated for the big gig, but I'm still worried it will be another war monger, Tom Cotton.

He was Trump's 3rd attempt at Secretary of the Army, after Vince Viola(?) and Mark Green. Among other notes on his career...

He is occasionally referred to as "Dr." because he has a PhD. We're doomed.

I always vote for Kushner. One day he will do something that prompts wifey to complain to daddy.

Wait just a damn minute here....they're not even trying anymore. And why do I think they're hiding something?

He's been divorced for 10 years and his kids are grown, and he's quiting "to spend more time with his family"? That's either a bad lie or the guy really likes his cat.

And second, one other reason I heard was that the FBI hasn't started the full background check yet and it would take too long? WFT? Is anyone else concerned that the guy was already the Assistant Secretary of Defense and they didn't have a pretty good start on the background check yet? Or even 6 months after he moved to the big office?

This stuff...
In late March 2019, news sources reported that Shanahan was under investigation by the Pentagon's Office of Inspector General because of allegations he improperly advocated on behalf of his former employer, Boeing Co.

In a May 2019 internal memo, Shanahan ordered new restrictions on how information about global operational plans and orders are shared with Congress, such that summaries are provided rather than an actual plan or order that was requested.
I'm willing to bet is a bigger deal than we already know.

That doesn't even count the crooked banker from Wisconsin who just got indicted. Would have been convenient to have someone nominated that we already know what he's gonna go to prison for. :rotflmao:

ETA: just saw most of this on the "Transition 2016 and so forth" thread. :blackeye:
Trump says Shanahan out as Defense secretary nominee
..................
Shanahan said in a statement that going forward with the confirmation process “would force my three children to relive a traumatic chapter in our family’s life and reopen wounds we have worked years to heal.”

“I would welcome the opportunity to be secretary of Defense, but not at the expense of being a good father,” he said.
...........
Trump’s announcement Tuesday came just over an hour after USA Today reported that Shanahan’s FBI background check was being held up by an alleged 2010 domestic fight with his now-ex wife.
...............
Shanahan himself said he had “no concerns” about the background check.

But after rumors circulated under the radar for weeks, reports began to come out publicly this week that the process was being marred by the alleged domestic incident.

As reported by USA Today, police reports and court filings showed that an August 2010 fight with his ex-wife escalated into a physical clash. The wife, Kimberley Jordinson, reportedly told police he punched her in the stomach, while he told police she was the aggressor and punched him “10 or 20 times.”

She was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, but prosecutors later dropped the charges citing a lack of evidence.

The Washington Post on Tuesday also detailed a 2011 incident in which Shanahan’s son hit Jordinson with a baseball bat and left Jordinson unconscious in a pool of blood.

“Bad things can happen to good families . . . and this is a tragedy, really,” Shanahan told the Post in an interview published shortly after Trump’s tweets. Dredging up the episode publicly, Shanahan said, “will ruin my son’s life.”

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan, who has done a wonderful job, has decided not to go forward with his confirmation process so that he can devote more time to his family....

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump
....I thank Pat for his outstanding service and will be naming Secretary of the Army, Mark Esper, to be the new Acting Secretary of Defense. I know Mark, and have no doubt he will do a fantastic job!

18:59 - 18 Jun 2019
Yeah - dotus knows Mark, but does he also know all the murky personal details in the past of his buddy who likely will advance to a nomination for Seretary Of Defense?

Its a hedge against the 25th Amendment challenge. If it comes up, he'll argue you need a majority of the POSSIBLE WHEN ALL JOBS ARE FILLED Cabinet, and the Actings don't get to vote, and there's no quorum.

Then, using his might Article Two powers that let him do anything, he orders all the real cabinet members to vote to keep him and if they refuse he fires them. Then his lawyers write a letter saying he can't be impeached for using his legally granted powers and we start over...

Not just as a perpetual Jimmy voter, I say yes: the CBP is on the same tier as the USCG, Secret Service, TSA, and ICE on the DHS's org chart.

And Sanders only had this job because Nielsen was purged.
