I'm sensing a certain unease among people with regard to Mattis' departure. :?

I think Marco didn't read the resignation letter.

Oh hell. I remember when Mattis, John Kelly and Tillerson made a pact that one of them would always be babysitting Trump. With Mattis gone, #PresidentLoco is now without adult supervision. Be afraid, America. Be very, afraid.

Big tell in the letter is the sign-off.

There is none. Just a signature. No thank you. No "Very respectfully" (a default military closing), not even a "sincerely yours." Nada. It's like those rare times when a SCOTUS Justice goes with "I dissent" instead of "I respectfully dissent."

This is scary. Secretary Mattis has been an island of stability amidst the chaos of the Trump administration. As we’ve seen with the President’s haphazard approach to Syria, our national defense is too important to be subjected to the President’s erratic whims.

This is a sad day. General Mattis was giving advice POTUS needs to hear. Mattis rightly believes that Russia & China are adversaries, and that we are at war with jihadists across the globe who plot to kill Americans. Isolationism is a weak strategy that will harm Americans...

Sadly, the Trumpenfuhrer won't get that sort of subtlety. For Trump to get it, something like, "Go fuck yourself you stupid piece of shit" would have been more appropriate.

There isn't a single word of praise for Trump in Mattis's resignation letter.
Actually, paragraph 3 starts "Like you, ..." (but even that's "damned with faint praise")

Maybe KellyAnne will mention to Trump....................

George Conway: 'Speaks volumes' that Mattis did not praise Trump in resignation

George Conway, a lawyer who’s married to White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, on Thursday analyzed outgoing Defense Secretary James Mattis’s resignation letter, saying it included “not a word of praise” for President Trump.

Mattis announced on Thursday that he would resign because Trump deserved a secretary "whose views are better aligned with yours."

Conway tweeted that the resignation letter lacked the usual pleasantries and the absence of praise “speaks volumes.”

“No pro forma ‘it has been a privilege to have worked with you to [something],’ or formulaic ‘I am proud that we were able to [fill in here]’—or even the usually obligatory ‘thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve,’” Conway noted.

The nicest line in the letter was the opening, “Dear Mr. President,” he added. <SNIP>

I've got mixed feelings about this.

On the one hand, Mad Dog was just about the only member of the entire administration who is not, at all times and in all places, a catastrophic assclown.

On the other, the Constitution makes POTUS, not SECDEF, the Commander in Chief. It sounds like, at least with regard to both Syria and Afghanistan, he's decided to do some Commander-in-Chiefing. Regardless of whether those decisions are right or catastrophic geopolitical blunders that will cause damage from which the country may never recover, they're his decisions to make. Having an "internal resistance" to his whims in this area was never something that was healthy; it was, at absolute best, slightly less harmful to the nation in the long term than the decisions being resisted.

With Mattis gone, the Republicans no longer have the "adult in the room" to hide behind. They're going to have to face facts: they need to either shit or vacate the pot.
