Trump plan to BUILD THAT WALL!

#1

Post by TexasFilly » Wed Jan 25, 2017 1:54 pm

The ridiculousness of this has been discussed here during the election. But now VIC is trying to move forward with this absurdity. I heard a discussion on MSNBC last night about how VIC plans to use money ( an estimated $58 billion, which I think is too low) appropriated to DHS for other matters and just shift the funds. This appears to me to be an obvious violation of the Constitution, not to mention the fact that Mexico was going to pay for it. :brickwallsmall:

The President Trump thread is getting unwieldy (as tends to happen when you have a lunatic in the Oval Office), so I thought I'd start breaking down the topics, for ease of discussion.

Time to call your congressman even if they are like mine- all Party policy following Republicans.

Time for Tribe et al. to file another lawsuit. Hopefully, this time they can find some plaintiffs with standing.

. 2,000 Miles @ $6,000,000,000 per mile = $12,000,000,000,000

That's $12 Trillion, folks, in case you can't count that high.

Edit: Anyone know the GDP for Mexico? Waaaaay less, a sliver of $12 Trillion, an educated guess.

That's why the Mexicans are going to pay for it.

Seriously, how long is it going to take for even Trump's supporters to decide this is ridiculous?

Unless Trump can get Congress to waive the National Environmental Policy Act, then the Sierra Club et al and Indian tribes will have this bottled up in court for years.

Where did price of 6 billion per mile come from? That seems off to me by orders of magnitude. I dunno.

I saw an estimate somewhere that the whole thing would be like 25 billion -- maybe Washington Post? Not the administration. Nothing they say is true.

Yeah, I've heard estimates in the $20 - 25B range too. That's still yuge.

It's complicated. Many of the areas that the "wall" would be built upon are (a) rivers or (b) mountainous or rocky terrain or (c) owned by private landowners. I'll see if I can find some legit estimates, but you have to factor in all of the above to come up with a true average cost/mile.

Mr Rhuzkan's estimate was based on a wall that ran five feet beneath the ground and 20 feet above. Mr Trump's claims for the wall range between 30ft and, more recently, 55ft. Even at 1,000 miles - vast amounts of concrete would be required.
A study by the Washington Post estimated the cost of the president's wall would be closer to $25 billion.
Imagine a 1,000-mile wall, at a height of about 50 feet, the middle of the range that Trump has thrown out. Then suppose the wall extended 15 feet underground—a little more than is structurally necessary for a foundation, but enough to deter some tunnelers. You wouldn’t really build a long wall at a constant thickness, but let’s assume that on average, it’s one foot thick—enough to make a 50-foot wall stable and hard to cut through, a concern that Trump and his supporters have raised with the existing border fence.
That makes a 1,000-mile wall pencil out at $27 billion to $40 billion.
https://www.technologyreview.com/s/6024 ... rder-wall/
The analysts predicted the wall would be 40 feet tall and 1,000 miles long, go 7 feet underground (to prevent tunneling), and be 10 inches thick. The simplest construction material to use would be concrete, according to the analysts — and based on concrete prices and the estimated size of the wall, that cost alone would be around $700 million.
The estimated cost would be at least $15 billion, according to the analysts, and possibly as much as $25 billion.
http://www.businessinsider.com/bernstei ... ion-2017-1
So 25-40 billion depending on depth and thickness and height.

OUR GDP is only 16 Trillion or so.

In 2015 Mexico's nominal GDP was $1,283 trillion.

Who had standing when the House filed a lawsuit over Obama's supposedly unconstitutional use of funds for Obamacare subsidies?

I was already upset about Mary Tyler Moore and then Donald's hard core, mean, vindictive remarks at DHS with his staff cheering again made me sick to my stomach. I try not to hear him but it bled over the Mary coverage. I made 5 calls.

Yay that CNN went back to Mary. Carl Reiner is about to call in. That must be pissing Donald off bigly. But they can't be let off the hook for the damage this is doing already.

Well, they won't have to wait for environmental impact reports, so screw the wildlife.

Seven feet will prevent tunnels? You guys are a special kind of stupid, aren't you?

Hand-dug mines have been dug hundreds of feet below the surface. A tunnel dug down twenty feet and back up again is pretty easy in favorable subsoil conditions.

Where did you get the figure of $6B per mile? That seems extremely high, even taking into account that this isn't an ordinary wall. I might believe $60M per mile, but even that seems high to me.

$60M /mile is ~$12K/ft. That might be about right. At that rate, total is ~$1.2Trillion.

Killing one more place gives $6M/mile, only ~$1200/ft. Seems doubtful. Anyone got an opinion on that?

from the Gaza Egypt border:
Tunnels were considered a means of resistance” and became more sophisticated and large enough to accommodate bigger items. Tunnel lengths ranged from 300 yards to more than 1 mile. Their circumference could reach more than 6.5 feet at a depth of 65-100 feet underground, the worker said.
http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/origina ... gling.html

Tunneling will of course only be done where the entry/exit points can be well hidden, which means they would be within existing villages and cities.

we should all just chip in and buy a gold plated toilet and have it installed in the Oval office. Trump can invite Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell and they can champagne toast each other while they flush every penny (and the US) down the toilet.
