And a real media move. This Friday the last of the Los Angeles Times staff will have moved out of their offices across from City Hall. Most are moving to a new facility in El Segundo (one of the 88 incorporated cities in Los Angeles County); there will be a small bureau in downtown to cover things like city and county politics.

There has been lots of reminiscing about the old home, both in the press, and on Facebook groups for current and former employees. Darrell Kunitomi, who had been leading tours of the facility for decades, has been giving special tours for employees. The final one was last week. Also last week there was a final celebration of the place for current and former employees. I wasn't able to attend, but there have been lots of FB posts about it. The posts are mostly on closed Facebook groups, so it wouldn't be appropriate to share them here.

I think I can share these two pictures. The eagle is on it's way to El Segundo:

One thing the Media could do is move their microphones in the direction of a Democrat.

From https://www.mediamatters.org/blog/2018/ ... age/220738

There are a couple of other graphs there of the number of times they were quoted by day. On 2 days the dems were quoted more than republicans in the NYT, and 1 in Wapo. That's it.

Tell me again how its the democrats fault they cant get their message out. I need a good long laugh.

Democrats need to start getting creative about putting messaging in places that aren't controlled by media outlets. Counting on news organizations to get your message across is a losing strategy for Democrats because they aren't the ones with the outrageous messaging. Usually. Remember when Maxine Waters made her somewhat controversial comments recently? They had NO problem splashing that all over the place.

If Democrats want their positive messages all over the place, then they need to start thinking of creative ways of getting short, memorable messages in front of people on a regular basis.

I've heard that women tend to look for men that resemble their fathers. In this case Junior is looking for a woman who resembles his dad.

Newspapers Plan Coordinated Response to Trump

The Boston Globe is proposing a coordinated editorial response from publications across the U.S. on August 16th to President Trump’s frequent attacks on the news media, the AP reports.

About 70 outlets had committed to editorials denouncing what the Globe called a “dirty war against the free press,” with the list expected to grow.

Second Fox News reporter leaves this month over network's direction: report http://hill.cm/tGzwfUs

11:43 AM - 24 Aug 2018
On-air senior correspondent Adam Housley has decided to leave because he disapproved of on-air discussions, former Fox News employees with knowledge of his situation told Politico on Friday.

Housley, who joined Fox in 2001 out of Los Angeles, disputed the story.

According to Politico, he told other former employees that it is difficult to get "hard reporting" on air because of the network’s focus on President Trump and its number of political commentators.

“He’s not doing the type of journalism he wants to be doing,” the former employee said. “And he is unhappy with the tone of the conversation of the channel.”

Fox News disables comments for all YouTube videos about McCain’s death after followers ruthlessly smear him
David Edwards DAVID EDWARDS
26 AUG 2018 AT 13:34 ET

Fox News on Sunday disabled the ability to comment on its YouTube videos about the death of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).

Over the weekend, scores of commenters at the Fox News website were allowed to trash Sen. John McCain. But those attempting to view videos about McCain on YouTube were notified that the network had “disabled” commenting.

“Comments are disabled for this video,” a notice on each video said.

Fox News continued to allow comments on videos about other topics.

Meanwhile, at least one story on FoxNews.com had accepted at least 3,500 comments in about two hours. Many of the comments wished McCain “good riddance” and declared him a traitor.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t celebrate the life of a man who has done so much evil,” one commenter opined. “He is burning in Hell right now, and receiving the due payment for his evil deeds.”

The New Yorker - Jeffrey Toobin
A New Book Details the Damage Done by the Right-Wing Media in 2016

The Washington conventional wisdom presupposes a kind of symmetry between our polarized political parties. Liberals and conservatives, it is said, live in separate bubbles, where they watch different television networks, frequent different Web sites, and absorb different realities. The implication of this view is that both sides resemble each other in their twisted views of reality. Rachel Maddow and Sean Hannity, in other words, represent two sides of the same coin.

This view is precisely wrong, according to a provocative new book by Yochai Benkler, Robert Faris, and Hal Roberts that will be published next month by Oxford University Press. The book’s title, “Network Propaganda: Manipulation, Disinformation, and Radicalization in American Politics,” is a mouthful, but the book’s message is almost simple. The two sides are not, in fact, equal when it comes to evaluating “news” stories, or even in how they view reality. Liberals want facts; conservatives want their biases reinforced. Liberals embrace journalism; conservatives believe propaganda. In the more measured but still emphatic words of the authors, “the right-wing media ecosystem differs categorically from the rest of the media environment,” and has been much more susceptible to “disinformation, lies and half-truths.”

“Network Propaganda” is an academic work at the crossroads of law, sociology, and media studies. Benkler is a law professor at Harvard and a co-director of the university’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, where Faris and Roberts both conduct research. The book is not a work of media criticism but, rather, of data analysis—a study of millions of online stories, tweets, and Facebook-sharing data points. The authors’ conclusion is that “something very different was happening in right-wing media than in centrist, center-left and left-wing media.” Accordingly, they wrote the book “to shine a light on the right-wing media ecosystem itself as the primary culprit in sowing confusion and distrust in the broader American ecosystem.”

The core of the book is the study of how that right-wing ecosystem works. According to the authors, false stories are launched on a series of extreme Web sites, such as InfoWars (the home of Alex Jones), “none of which claim to follow the norms or processes of professional journalistic objectivity.” Those stories are then transmitted to outlets such as Fox News and the Daily Caller, which, according to the authors, “do claim to follow journalistic norms,” but often fail in that function when it comes to tales from the Web sites. Notably, the authors write, “this pattern is not mirrored on the left wing.” There are no significant Web sites on the left that parallel the chronic falsity of those on the right, and the upstream sources do follow traditional journalistic standards, and serve “as a consistent check on the dissemination and validation of the most extreme stories when they do emerge on the left, and have no parallels in the levels of visibility or trust that can perform the same function on the right.”

Gothamist
The Village Voice Is Officially Dead

Three years after buying The Village Voice, and a year after the paper shut down its print edition, owner Peter Barbey told the remaining staff today that the publication will no longer be posting any new stories.

"Today is kind of a sucky day," Barbey told the staff, according to audio obtained by Gothamist. "Due to, basically, business realities, we're going to stop publishing Village Voice new material [sic]."

Barbey said that half of the staff, which is around 15 to 20 people, will remain on to "wind things down," and work on a project to archive the Voice's material online.

The rest of the staff will be let go today.

"I bought the Village Voice to save it; this isn't exactly how I thought it was going to end up. I'm still trying to save the Village Voice," Barbey told the staff.

Very interesting chart on site.
Wonkette Is Fake News Like Louise Mensch, According To World's Best Fucking Chart

Have you seen that chart posted above? The very good one? The one that gets posted on your Nana's Facebook all the time, that shows exactly how biased and factual websites are? Of course you've seen that chart! It is a fairly decent chart, with only 174 or so errors! If not, LOOKIT.

Well, bad news, Wonkette has recently been added to it and ... um ... we don't think they actually read Wonkette for long enough to understand what is going on here at this dick joke warblog/mommyblog about recipes and sex that talks about politics sometimes. Do you see where they put us? In that bullshit place to the left of The Intercept and just north of Louise Mensch when it comes to #ScienceFacts? The fuck, bro?

We found out about our recent inclusion on The Chart because apparently it was displayed at some sort of #GoodJournalism conference in Austin called ONA this morning. We like good journalism very much!

The chart was made by Vanessa Otero, juris doctor (of patent law, which is not JOURNAMALISM), and it's published on a website called Ad Fontes Media. "Ad fontes" is a Latin expression that literally means "back to the fountains or springs" -- in other words, back to the original sources. This would also be a good name for the Wonkette website, because we link to original sources in every post, and we are big fans of reading Supreme Court decisions and Devin Nunes's cow-fucking memos for ourselves, because we want to get it right, so that we can add our opinions, analysis and dick jokes appropriately. (FACTCHECK: We are still not sure if Devin Nunes has ever fucked a cow. But we're not saying he hasn't!) And when we get it wrong, we tear our hair out, fire everyone (we don't fire everyone because it's usually Rebecca) and say so!

CNN
Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and his wife are buying Time Magazine

Another billionaire tech CEO is buying a prestigious print publication.

This time it's Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and his wife Lynne Benioff. They are buying Time Magazine for $190 million from Meredith Corp.

"The Benioffs will hold Time as a family investment," Time editor in chief Edward Felsenthal told his staffers when the deal was announced on Sunday night.

"It will have no connection to Salesforce, the software company Marc founded in 1999," Felsenthal said. "While they will not be operators of the business, we are extremely fortunate to have Marc and Lynne's guidance and mentorship as we set out to build a new company." ...

Meredith is still working on selling three other former Time Inc. titles: Fortune, Money, and Sports Illustrated. Benioff is not buying those.

A Meredith spokeswoman said deals for the other three titles are expected to be announced in the "near future."
