Chosen Country A Rebellion in the West by James Pogue

OK, I got my hands on an ARC, I think the real deal comes out in May. The back cover says Pogue has written for The New Yorker and others including Vice. We were chatting at OLive yesterday, and I think this is the guy who wrote that excellent piece on Wes Kjar and his journey away from the refuge (too lazy to look it up right now).

Still in the first chapter, and it begins a bit too in-depth in name dropping at the refuge except for those of us who have followed this from day one (hopefully the finished copies include a cast of poot characters). LOL, Jason Patrick is indeed the heavy smoker we all knew he was and currently having a heated phone call with someone with the first name of Brandon - I suspect Brandon Curtiss.

You all can join me in this short journey, but this seems a good spot to track my thoughts and quotes. Oh, and since we all know how it ended, spoilers ahoy and spoiler tags not needed?

Looking forward to hearing more.

You did a great job in the "Fire And Furry - The quotes thread". Thanks for that.

I need the cast of characters because I can never keep Ryan Payne, Blaine Cooper, Brandon Curtiss, the guy found sniveling in the chicken coop, et al., straight. Also need a website to track the ever-shifting fights and alliances.

So far, the author is not alikeable narrator IMHO. He's had a past with the poots - a mine in southern Oregon - that I assume is Sugar Pine Mine? They all seem to recognize him, and the author claims he was doing a bit of drifting before Malhuer and doing drugs and stuff. He's just recounted catching up with Jason Patrick and some conversations and observations.

And this while everyone's paranoid the FBI is coming in now:
Sean and Sandy Anderson, a couple in their forties with matching camo getups, matching rifles, and matching far-north Wisconsin accents, came up, deeply freaked out and claiming to have seen figures moving at the rear gate entrace to the compound, which they'd been guarding.
Whew, that's a long sentence with a lot of commas.

He left off their matching alcohol and/or substance abuse habits.

Do we have the answer to the rattling door knob in the middle of the night? The author recounts this episode with JP and himself
He asked if I wanted to go meet Ammon.

We drove over, left the truck idling outside, and tried the door of the stone office. It was locked. We didn't know it at the time, but the mood inside the office was such that Ammon's bodyguard (is raised his AR-15 and pointed it toward the door. Ryan indicated to him to fire through the tongue-and-groove boards if the knob rattled again. Jason went for the knob and took it in his hand, then paused. "It guess they're busy,"...Ammon Bundy leaned back in a swivel chair and played with his iPhone. "oh," he said, to no one in particular, "it's fun to live this way."

Jason came in just as I'd finally laid down to sleep. I pretended to be out already and he leaned his AR against the wall, unclipped the holster hodling his .45, and stuck it with the keys and changes from his pocket in a cubbyhole above my head.
Memory fades and all, but I thought it was a bit of a deal at trial/sentencing that JP never had a firearm?

There are typos in these paragraphs. Can't his publisher afford a proofreading pass? I know, I know. Who proofreads anymore?

1. The typose might be mine, Chrome doesn't always auto-correct for me, so the fault could be mine.
2. If the typo isn't my fault, ARCs are supposed to come with some slack, since they aren't the final copy. I have seen some ARCs with wicked typos.

Not blaming you. Just not happy with the state of the publishing industry. I appreciate the quotations.
I'm surprised Jason could balance his cigs, Wild Turkey, and AR-15 without accident.

My memory faded a long time ago but here is a snippet from a Feb. 14, 2018 OLive article - so he had gunz.
"Patrick carried a gun at the refuge in violation of his release conditions in a pending Georgia case"

I'm hoping to hit it hard this weekend. I really would like to see some of our favorite media folk- s who reported on this give this a read. Those who do the Twitter thing, please encourage them to write to the publisher and see if they'll send them an advanced copy. Never hurts to try. Maxine, Leah Sottie, Scott Klatt, Peter Walker (I am currently reading the author's take on the big meeting in Burns and it seems a bit different from PW's version).

Chapter 6. Not quite sure why the author has back tracked so many years and what a summer in Sonora CA hanging out in bars has to do with the refuge occuation, but at the moment I need something to put me back to sleep and this might do it...
