The early returns seem to be all from the rural counties

Unfortunate but not really unexpected.

I bet there are some white supremacist peeps who are not happy that 46% of Mississippians voted for a black man. And the demographics will continue to evolve.

The runoff is automatic if no candidate gets over 50% of the vote and there were originally 5 candidates, including the poster boy for MS racists, Chris McDaniel.

I am warming up to the idea of preferential voting like Maine used this year. In case you haven't followed how this system works voters are allowed to select a first and second choice. If no one wins a majority of the votes the 3rd place finishers votes are given to the top two based on his or her voters' second choice. It probably wouldn't have mattered in the Mississippi race but it would allow more 3rd party candidates to run without being spoilers.

Companies are still waiting on Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith to refund donations made to her Senate campaign.

Aetna and Boston Scientific are two of the businesses who haven't gotten their money back.
