Republicans face big risks in contested California races as Democrats fight for control of the House

Democrats have their strongest shot in the 49th District, covering northern San Diego County and the southern Orange County coast up through Dana Point. Mike Levin, the Democrat, has a 55%-41% lead over Republican Diane Harkey, the poll shows. Republican Rep. Darrell Issa decided not to run for reelection in a district that Hillary Clinton carried by just more than 7 points in the 2016 presidential election.

White voters with college degrees make up 45% of the likely voters in this mostly affluent, suburban district, and they back Levin 60% to 35%. Latinos, who make up about 1 in 8 likely voters here, back him by about a 3-1 majority. While men are divided almost evenly between the two, women favor Levin 60% to 34%.

Perhaps most important, likely voters disapprove of how Trump is doing as president 61% to 39%, with more than half, 55%, saying they strongly disapprove. Democrats and liberals were significantly more likely than Republicans and conservatives to say that it was “very important” for them to cast a vote to show their position on Trump.

LA Times
Democrat Mike Levin to Replace Republican Darrell Issa in SoCal’s 49th District

Democrat Mike Levin has won the race for the 49th Congressional District, moving controversial Rep. Darrell Issa’s seat from the Republican column. Issa has held the seat since 2002.

Levin will probably seek to put his influence on environmental issues, which have occupied most of his career since law school. He has been an executive and advocate at alternative energy organizations and has favored the state’s goal to eliminate fossil fuel in electricity production.

I think the big win can be attributed to an amazing ground game by the Flip the 49th group. After the 2016 election a dedicated group of people started protesting at Issa's office in Vista CA every Tuesday. Darrel dismissed them as a bunch of nut cases. Bad move by Darrel, this motivated them to make him pay. the Republicans tried to get the protest moved away, tried to get law enforcement to harass the protesters, to no avail. Any event Darrel went to in the county, protesters showed up. I think It ended up being the largest ongoing protest in the country, regularly attracting between 300 and 600 protesters. Eventually the protesters organized to canvas every Saturday (daily around election time). I think they knocked on every democratic door at least once, I had at least three visits to my house, and that was just when I was home. Textbook case of great grass roots organizing.

Darrel Issa is the gift that keeps on giving. Question is, how many more ways can he lose? His most recent loss was in the CA Court of Appeals. I suppose he can appeal to the Supreme Court, please do Derrelick
During the course of the 2016 political campaign to represent the 49th Congressional District, challenger candidate Doug Applegate's campaign ran two television advertisements about incumbent Darrell Issa that Issa contends were false and defamatory. Issa filed a lawsuit against Applegate, Doug Applegate for Congress, Inc., and Robert Dempsey (the respondents), alleging libel based on statements made in these two television advertisements. The trial court granted the respondents' anti-SLAPP motion and entered judgment in favor of the respondents on Issa's complaint. Issa appealed. While "t is abhorrent that many political campaigns are mean- spirited affairs that shower the voters with invective instead of insight[,]" in order "to ensure the preservation of a citizen's right of free expression, we must allow wide latitude." The Court of Appeal ultimately concluded the trial court properly granted the respondents' anti-SLAPP motion because Issa could not demonstrate the statements about which he complained were demonstrably false statements of fact.
