Poll: Tenney, Brindisi locked in dead heat in race for Congress

U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney and State Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi are locked in a dead heat for the 22nd Congressional District seat only 10 weeks before the election, according to a poll made public Wednesday night.

Brindisi, a Utica Democrat, is favored 46 to 44 percent over Tenney, R-New Hartford, according to the Spectrum News/Siena College poll of likely voters. ...

"In a district with 30,000 more Republicans than Democrats, incumbent Republican Tenney is barely holding her own versus Democratic challenger Brindisi," said Siena pollster Steve Greenberg, who noted that Brindisi has the support of 26 percent of Republicans.

One reason for the disconnect is that Tenney is viewed unfavorably by the majority of voters (42 percent favorable to 47 percent unfavorable) while Brindisi is viewed favorably (44 percent to 27 percent).

The results confirm what political analysts in Washington have predicted for months: The Tenney-Brindisi battle is one of the most competitive House races in the nation in this year's midterm elections, and perhaps the best chance for Democrats to pick up a seat in New York state.

Tenney has tried in the past month to boost support among her base in a district that President Donald Trump carried with 55 percent of the vote in 2016.

Anthony Brindisi, a Democratic state assemblyman, defeated a first-term Republican incumbent, Claudia Tenney, in a district stretching through central New York from the Pennsylvania border to the shores of Lake Ontario, taking in the cities of Utica and Binghamton. Though the district is now seen as leaning Republican, Democrats represented much of its territory in the decade before the 2012 redistricting.

I may have jumped the gun on this one, but the (D) Win looks to be proving out.

Anthony Brindisi pads his lead; Claudia Tenney needs a miracle to keep House seat

Anthony Brindisi is on the verge of clinching a victory in the 22nd Congressional District election after winning the absentee ballot count Friday in two more counties, distancing himself from Rep. Claudia Tenney.

Tenney's chance of a post-election night rally all but disappeared as Brindisi expanded his lead to 3,178 votes on the strength of absentee ballot victories in Broome and Herkimer counties.

Tenney, R-New Hartford, won the absentee count in Oswego County on Friday, but the 125-vote margin (484-359) was not enough to make a significant dent in Brindisi's lead.

With five of the eight counties in the district now finished counting absentee and affidavit ballots, Brindisi seems assured of a victory.

Tenney, R-New Hartford, would need to capture about 78 percent of the uncounted ballots in Oneida, Chenango and Tioga counties to win the election, a vast departure from the Election Day vote in those counties.

An Ardent Trump Supporter Becomes 3rd N.Y. House Republican to Fall

Representative Claudia Tenney, a first-term Republican who aligned her re-election campaign to President Trump, has lost her bid for a second term in New York’s 22nd District in Central New York.

After a drawn-out vote count, Ms. Tenney was unable to make up her Election Day deficit to Anthony Brindisi, a centrist Democratic state assemblyman, in a district that stretches from Lake Ontario to the Pennsylvania border.

Leading by roughly 1,000 votes after the initial vote count, Mr. Brindisi, 40, had declared victory over Ms. Tenney. But Ms. Tenney, 57, refused to concede. The Associated Press called the race on Wednesday.

With Mr. Brindisi’s victory, Democrats have now picked up 39 House seats in the midterm elections. Two House races remain to be called: one each in New York and California.

Ms. Tenney becomes the third Republican in New York to lose a congressional seat this cycle. Antonio Delgado defeated Representative John J. Faso in New York’s 19th District, and in Staten Island, Max Rose defeated Representative Dan Donovan.
