MacArthur Faces Tough Race In New Jersey

A new Monmouth poll in New Jersey’s 3rd congressional district finds Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-NJ) barely leading challenger Andy Kim (D), 41% to 40%, among all potential voters – that is voters who have participated in an election since 2010 or have newly registered to vote.

“When applying two different likely voter models, the contest shifts in the Democrat’s favor although it remains basically tied. A historical midterm model gives Kim 45% support and MacArthur 44%, while a model that includes a turnout surge in Democratic precincts gives Kim a slight 46% to 43% lead. These gaps are within the margin of error for these samples.”

The Cook Political Report has the district as Lean Republican.

CBS News
Kim Takes Lead NJ’s 3rd Congressional District, Votes Still Being Counted

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The race in New Jersey’s third congressional district is too close to call. Officials say it could be days until the race is officially called.

It’s a critical seat in the balance of power. Republican incumbent Tom MacArthur is facing a strong challenge from Democrat Andy Kim, who is a former Obama administration official.

MacArthur has been an ally of Trump’s and is seeking his third term.

The battle for New Jersey’s Third Congressional District won’t be officially decided until next week, says Burlington County’s Election Board Chair. Burlington County says they received a record number of mail-in ballots, 26,000 and are still counting those. Then they’ll count provisional ballots.

According to CBS’3 Cleve Bryan, Kim has the lead by roughly 2,600 votes after mail-in ballots were counted.

Currently, Kim has a total of 148,582 votes, MacArthur has 145,958. Officials say there are still 4,000 provisional ballots that need to be counted.

I really hope Kim pulls it out. He started one of the early resistance groups that I got roped into, and I was on a few small conference calls with him. The guy's really really smart, very driven, and had the initiative to start putting something together when most folks were still doing the decapitated chicken dance.

That CBS report says that the mail-in ballots are still being counted AND that they were all counted.

That's metaphysically absurd, man.

AP hasn't called this yet.

Philadelphia Inquirer
Democrat Andy Kim claims win over U.S. Rep. Tom MacArthur in N.J.’s 3rd Congressional District

MOUNT LAUREL — A day after an Election Night standoff, Democrat Andy Kim claimed victory to a seat held by U.S. Rep. Tom MacArthur after thousands of mail ballots tallied by Burlington County election officials gave him the lead in New Jersey's hotly contested Third District Congressional race.

"With the vast majority of votes now in and counted and based on the numbers we saw from Burlington County today, we have built a substantial lead," he told supporters crowded into his headquarters in an office park in Mount Laurel Wednesday night. "I am proud to announce that we have won this hard-fought race."

MacArthur, however, did not concede, issuing a statement saying, "This has been a hard fought campaign and like Andy Kim, I'm ready to see it come to an end." He said he would await the final count, including 7,000 votes he said were still outstanding. ...

Even before the remaining mail ballots were added to the results, officials at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said they were confident that the final results would lift Kim over MacArthur, who encountered a surge of suburban activism and an electorate's deep anxiety over health care in his quest for a third term.

Ex-Obama Aide Andy Kim Beats GOP Incumbent In NJ House Race

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Democratic former national security aide to Barack Obama Andy Kim has defeated two-term Republican incumbent Rep. Tom MacArthur in New Jersey’s 3rd District.

Kim upset MacArthur in the hotly contested southern New Jersey district, widening the Democrats’ edge in the House.

The U.S. House historian’s database shows he’s the first Asian-American elected from New Jersey. Kim has never run for or served in elected office before.

The Associated Press called the race Wednesday.

The district last elected a Democrat in 2008.

New York Times
N.J. Democrat Defeats Trump Ally, Leaving the State With Just 1 Republican in Congress

Andy Kim, a New Jersey Democrat who had been locked in a neck-and-neck race for Congress, has defeated his Republican opponent, a two-term incumbent and staunch ally of President Trump, according to a final vote tally.

After a drawn-out vote count, Mr. Kim, a former national security adviser under President Barack Obama, was declared the winner by a slim margin, beating Representative Tom MacArthur, who wrote a key amendment in the effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act, according to The Associated Press.

The victory by Mr. Kim caps a devastating midterm election for Republicans in New Jersey.

With 11 Democrats now holding House seats, Representative Chris Smith is the lone Republican in Washington from New Jersey; the last time Democrats had such a large advantage Theodore Roosevelt was in the Oval Office. ...

Mr. Kim’s race had once been seen as a long-shot. Though Mr. Obama won the district in 2008 and 2012, Mr. Trump claimed it by six points in 2016.

Since the early 1990s, only one Democrat — swept in on Mr. Obama’s coattails in 2008 — has represented the district in Congress.
