Gun Control Activist Lucy McBath Wins Democratic Nomination for Congress

By nearly every measure, Lucy McBath wasn’t supposed to get this far in the Democratic race for Congress in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District. She’s a mom who became a national advocate against gun violence after her only son, Jordan Davis, was shot and killed by a white man at a Florida gas station. She spent three decades as a flight attendant for Delta. And she had never run for public office before last year, when she jumped into the race for Georgia’s statehouse. Then she decided to switch things up and launched an even more ambitious run for the US Congress. In May, she won 36 percent of the vote in a crowded Democratic primary—enough for her to advance to a runoff. On Tuesday, she defeated Kevin Abel, a small businessman who immigrated from South Africa.

Along the way, McBath picked up a slew of prominent endorsements, including one last week from Rep. John Lewis (D), the civil rights leader who has represented the neighboring 5th district for the past three decades. Politically, the endorsement was a big deal because of Lewis’ outsized moral significance in the Democratic Party. But it also resonated personally with McBath. “He is such an icon and probably someone I have admired all of my life with a civil rights background,” McBath told Mother Jones. “So I’m very honored and humbled to have that endorsement.”

McBath’s run in the 6th district came roughly a year after another historic race. Jon Ossoff, a young Democrat, narrowly lost a special election in 2017 to Rep. Karen Handel in what was once considered a safe district for Republicans. Now, McBath will face off against Handel in November’s general election. ...

“At the forefront of my mind has always been, ‘I just want to make a difference,'” McBath said recently. Part of making that difference is upending the conventional wisdom of which voters matter in Georgia. She hoped to shape “that narrative that this is a diverse and inclusive district and that the person who represents this district should have the heart to serve the people in this district.”

This Democrat Just Seriously Outraised Her Republican Opponent in a Tight Georgia Race

Lucy McBath is gaining momentum in her face-off against Karen Handel in Georgia’s sixth.

Lucy McBath, the Democratic candidate vying to represent Georgia’s six congressional district, raised nearly twice the amount as Republican incumbent Karen Handel in the last quarter, according figures released this week.

While Handel still has raised more money over the entire campaign, the latest fundraising totals could be a sign of enthusiasm for McBath heading into the final stretch of the race. McBath reported raising about $960,000 in the third quarter, while Handel’s report shows about $540,000 in the same time period.

A McBath win would be a significant upset in a state that’s been all consumed recently with the competitive governor’s race and allegations of voter suppression on the part of Republican gubernatorial candidate and current secretary of state Brian Kemp. McBath is a former Delta flight attendant and first-time candidate who is running in part on a gun safety platform, inspired by the high-profile shooting death of her teenage son, Jordan Davis, by a white motorist at a Florida gas station in 2012. Handel, meanwhile, served as Georgia’s secretary of state before narrowly defeating upstart Democrat Jon Ossoff in a high-profile 2017 special election. That race also drew headlines for its massive fundraising hauls. But the state’s sixth congressional district has long been a Republican stronghold, and Ossoff ultimately finished just under three points short of Handel in a run off. ...

While McBath’s team celebrates the fundraising haul, Handel—who has carefully tried to distance herself from President Donald Trump—is still seen as a slight favorite in the race, and a poll last month showed with her a two percent lead over McBath. She also has almost $980,000 cash on hand, while McBath has just over $700,000. The last Democrat to represent the district was Jack Flynt, who left office in 1979.

Turnout soars on the first day of early voting in Georgia
By Mark Niesse Posted: 10:44 a.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2018

Voters across Georgia rushed to the polls on the first day of in-person early voting Monday, with 69,049 people casting their ballots.

That’s a sharp increase from the last midterm election in 2014, when 20,898 people showed up on the first day of in-person early voting, according to numbers from the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office.

Some early voters in Cobb County had to wait in lines for more than two hours, and others in Fulton County encountered delays because of technical difficulties.

Atlanta Journal Constitution
Lucy McBath declares victory in Georgia’s 6th District race

Democrat Lucy McBath has declared victory in her quest to unseat U.S. Rep. Karen Handel.

The Republican incumbent says not so fast.

“Given the close results of our race, and the fact that the official results at this time are within the 1 percent threshold where a recount is possible, we believe it is prudent to review and assess all data before making additional actions or statements,” Handel said in a statement.

The two graduated from Election Day to the day after in the fight for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District. While Handel maintained a slim lead in the early hours of Wednesday, the opposite was true by the time the sun came up.

Earlier Wednesday, McBath said the race appeared headed to a recount and launched a new fundraising effort via social media on Wednesday morning.

Later, she declared the race had ended in her favor. Results have her about 3,000 votes ahead - still within recount range. Additionally, Fulton County has about 3,700 provisional ballots outstanding and could have up to another 1,000 overseas ballots that need to be in by Friday at 5 p.m. Those ballots are county-wide; only part of the county is included in the district.

Awesome!! CNN just announced Karen Handel lost, that's fantastic!!

Amy Kremer is a mean and nasty Tea Party gal, she's on CNN a lot and always a total bitch. So mostly I comment on how lovely and compassionate she is. Here's her support for Brian Kemp:

And my reply:

Something tells me Amy's going to have three Grand Slam breakfasts and a bottle of cheap vodka this morning.

CNN: Georgia Democrat Lucy McBath beats GOP Rep. Karen Handel following tight race ...

"After carefully reviewing all of the election results data, it is clear that I came up a bit short on Tuesday," Handel said in the statement. "Congratulations to Representative-Elect Lucy McBath and I send her only good thoughts and much prayer for the journey that lies ahead for her."
