Minnesota Congressman Under Fire Over 2012 Comments About Women

By Astead W. Herndon
July 19, 2018

After audio surfaced of Representative Jason Lewis, a swing district Republican from Minnesota, making misogynistic remarks on his former radio program, his Democratic opponent in November’s midterm elections is saying Mr. Lewis’s rhetoric proves he is too extreme to represent the ideologically diverse district.

Angie Craig, a former journalist and health care manufacturing executive who is challenging Mr. Lewis in one of the most competitive districts in the country, said in an interview that “comments like this don’t represent Minnesota values.”

Mr. Lewis’s remarks were first reported Wednesday by CNN, which unearthed audio recordings of a radio show he hosted from 2009 to 2014.

In several instances, according to the recordings, he implied that women who voted for Democrats proved the stereotype that the female gender is more governed by emotion than reason. He also said that women who vote based on issues like birth control “have no cognitive function whatsoever” and lamented that certain women can no longer be publicly called derogatory terms like “sluts.”

With ‘slut’ comments, Rep. Jason Lewis’s radio career flares up again

Lewis spent two decades as a conservative radio host before running for Congress, leveraging his popularity as “Mr. Right” to a narrow win in Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District even as Democrats tried to use a history of controversial remarks against him. But Lewis’s comments about women while filling in for Rush Limbaugh in 2012 hadn’t previously been publicized until they were first reported by CNN Wednesday.

“Now, are we beyond those days where a woman can behave as a slut, but you can’t call her a slut?” he said.

It’s not Lewis’s first brush with backlash to his career as a conservative commentator. His on-air comments were widely circulated during his first campaign, including a remark that young women were “non-thinking” for their passion for contraceptive access.

He also wrote a passage in his 2011 book, “Power Divided is Power Checked,” suggesting it wasn’t the federal government’s role to ban slavery.

“If you don’t want to own a slave, don’t. But don’t tell other people they can’t,” he wrote.

Why did I have to transpose that statement into

“If you don’t want to own healthcare, don’t. But don’t tell other people they can’t"

I'm still holding my breath. The problem with rooting for the Democratic candidate is that metro areas usually come in first and they're the ones with the larger Democratic populations. If they're waiting for non-metro areas, I'm afraid that's going to be to Jason Lewis' favor. So I'll wait a bit longer before I celebrate.

Jason Lewis is/was a former right-wing radio talk show host who has run for public office in at least two states: Colorado and Minnesota. Since he lost this seat, look for him to show up in your state in his incessant pursuit of a good-paying job with the very government he rails against on the radio.
I've heard this bull before.
