Salt Lake Tribune
Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams jumps into U.S. House race against Rep. Mia Love

Ben McAdams, the Democratic mayor of Salt Lake County, announced he is running for Utah’s 4th Congressional District, teeing up a 2018 challenge against two-term Republican Rep. Mia Love.

McAdams, a former state senator who was re-elected to his second term as mayor of the state’s largest county in 2016, is known as one of the state’s most politically popular and ambitious Democrats. His name for years has been included in possible candidate lists for U.S. Senate and for governor.

He told The Salt Lake Tribune on Wednesday he’d zeroed in on the House seat because Congress and the federal government have created roadblocks to solving issues Utahns face. ...

Love, the first black Republican woman elected to the U.S. House, first ran in 2012, losing narrowly to Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson in the newly drawn 4th District. Matheson retired in 2014 and Love defeated Doug Owens in back-to-back showdowns, in 2014 and 2016.

The only other declared candidate hoping for a chance to face Love on the ballot next year is political newcomer Darlene McDonald, a Millcreek Democrat who works as an analyst at a high-tech firm in Lehi.

Salt Lake Tribune
Ben McAdams leads Mia Love, but says it may take days of ballot counting to call winner

Election night vote counts were too close to call in the race between GOP Rep. Mia Love and Democratic Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams — extending a 4th District race that always was close, with recent polls showing the race was tied.

But McAdams was leading 51.4 percent to 48.6 as of 7 a.m. Wednesday. That was close enough that McAdams said he figures he must wait perhaps days for late-arriving by-mail ballots for a clear victor to emerge. Love also hunkered down for possibly a long wait for more results.

“I think it is going to take a few days to know the outcome of this election,” McAdams told supporters. “If we win, this will be a win for people over politics. This will be a win for grassroots, small-dollar donations in Utah.”

Love, the only black Republican female member in the House, wasn’t close to conceding. “I’m optimistic and enthusiastic, I have to say. … We’re looking good. We’re waiting to see,” she said. “It’s a really good trajectory. We’re seeing about 74-75 percent of Utah County’s votes going our way. This is really good news.”

They just released some more numbers. McAdams lead grew slightly compared to earlier in the day, but it's still extremely tight:

BEN MCADAMS DEMOCRATIC 50.30% 115464
MIA B. LOVE REPUBLICAN 49.70% 114107

No idea how many votes are still outstanding.

Mia Love is the only black female R in Congress.
Mia Love, Sole Black Republican Woman in Congress, Fights for Her Seat
By Julie Turkewitz Oct. 4, 2018

MILLCREEK, Utah — Ben McAdams, a candidate for Congress, was speed-walking along the highway shoulder in his business suit, safety and common sense be damned.

“We’ll make it,” he said, as the trucks whistled by, blowing dust into the Utah sun.

In his bid to unseat Representative Mia Love, a Republican, Mr. McAdams has been trying to do just that — make it, in this case to the United States House as a Democrat from a state that runs about as red as the desert is dry. The district he seeks to represent, Utah’s Fourth, is a boot-shaped expanse extending south from Salt Lake City where fewer than 15 percent of the voters are registered Democrats.

The Hill
Mia Love suing to stop vote count in Utah

Rep. Mia Love (R-Utah) filed a lawsuit Wednesday to halt the processing and counting of votes in her bid for Utah's 4th Congressional District seat.

Love, who closely trails her Democratic opponent, Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams, requests in the lawsuit that the counting be stopped so that her campaign can examine “whether the signatures on ballot envelopes match the signatures on file with Salt Lake County.”

The lawsuit claims that poll monitors have noted instances when signatures on ballot envelopes did not match those on file.

"Given the time sensitivity of this petition, petitioners request a hearing at the court’s earliest convenience," the lawsuit adds.

In the lawsuit, filed in Utah's 3rd District Court, Love seeks the ability for her campaign to contest the county's determination of signatures on ballot envelopes, asking that such votes remain uncounted until those challenges have been settled.

But...didn't trump say Love lost because she didn't show him any love? If we apply trump logic, it's over and she's a loser.

Slight uptick for McAdams today. The margin is just over 1000 votes (50.2%), but apparently a batch of votes is due today from a heavily republican county that could put Love in the lead.

The Hill
Judge tosses Mia Love lawsuit to halt vote count

A judge on Friday dismissed GOP Rep. Mia Love's (Utah) lawsuit seeking to halt the vote count in Salt Lake County as the congresswoman continues to trail her Democratic opponent in the race for Utah's 4th Congressional District, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. ...

Third District Judge James D. Gardner dismissed Love’s suit Friday, stating that she "failed to show an entitlement."

“Although the Love Parties identified specific relief sought in the Petition, they failed to show an entitlement under Utah law to the relief sought,” Gardner wrote, according to the publication.

“In other words, the Love Parties failed to point the Court to a single statute, rule or case that would entitle them to any of the relief sought in the Petition,” he continued.

Gardner stated that Love’s campaign was asking him to “create expansive new rights,” in effect, by requesting that her campaign get involved in the ballot-counting process. ...

The race remains too close to call, but McAdams attended orientation for congressional freshmen in Washington earlier this week.

Mia Love had moved ahead by almost a percent for a while, but now it seems that McAdams is (barely) back in the lead. I'm fascinated by how long it takes for Utah to count votes...

Republicans were screaming bloody murder because Broward County, FL, with a million registered voters and 70% turnout, had a hard time counting their votes in three days.

Sorry for the threadjack but these damn arbitrary deadlines piss me off. They do nothing but disenfranchise voters because their county is understaffed or having mechanical issues.

New York Times
Representative Mia Love, Once a Republican Star, Loses Re-Election in Utah

Ben McAdams, the Democratic mayor of Salt Lake County, unseated Representative Mia Love, the first and only black Republican woman in Congress, whose bid for re-election in deep red Utah failed by a narrow margin on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.

After two drawn-out weeks of vote counting, Mr. McAdams, 43, won with 50.1 percent, or about 700 votes, in the Fourth District, a feat that many viewed as unlikely in a district where fewer than 15 percent of voters are registered Democrats.

With this victory, the Democrats have now picked up 38 House seats in the midterm elections. Three House races have yet to be called — two in New York and one in Georgia.

Ms. Love, 42, had been seen as a rising star in her party even before she was elected to Congress in 2014. She was given a prime speaking spot at the Republican National Convention in 2012, when she had mounted an unsuccessful congressional bid while serving as the mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah. Her family’s immigration from Haiti was a central theme of her speech.

The election results were a distinct departure from Ms. Love’s re-election in 2016, when she sailed to victory by 13 points. It also underscored the degree to which unease with President Trump is a bipartisan issue in Utah, where his hard-line policies and disdain for decorum has upset liberals and many conservatives whose political attitudes are shaped by the Mormon Church. Mr. Trump won just 45 percent of the vote in Utah in 2016.

Bye Mia.
After his election, Love called out the president for reportedly calling Haiti, home of her parents, a "shit hole" country, deeming his comments racist.

"I can't defend the indefensible. You have to understand that there are countries that struggle out there. But their people, their people are good people and they're part of us. We're Americans," Love said during an interview on CNN.

McAdams’ victory means House Democrats will hold at least 234 seats as the majority party in January when the new Congress is sworn in. The party has now flipped 42 seats, a net gain of 39.

According to Cook Political report editor Dave Wasserman, Love's loss means House Republicans will lose 43 percent of their female members at a time when there will be more women serving in Congress than ever before — a historic result powered almost entirely by newly elected House Democrats.

Salt Lake Tribune
Republican Rep. Mia Love concedes to Democrat Ben McAdams in Utah’s 4th District

Two-term Republican Rep. Mia Love called Democratic challenger Ben McAdams on Saturday to concede in Utah’s close 4th Congressional District race.

McAdams tweeted around 11 a.m. Saturday that he had just received a call from Love, who “graciously” congratulated him on winning the election. ...

“I thanked her for her service to our state and country. I wish her the best," McAdams said in the tweet. “There’s a tremendous amount of work to get done and we need bipartisan unity to do it.”

Dave Hansen, Love’s campaign manager, confirmed the concession call.
