Obama campaign successor teams up with progressives to train full-time activists

ATLANTA — Organizing for Action, the successor to Barack Obama’s presidential campaign that has been rebuilding itself as a Trump-era resistance machine, is launching a new effort to train more activists by connecting progressive groups with newly-trained organizers.

After training 1,000 fellows since the start of the year, OFA will work with the Wellstone institute, the woman-focused Emerge America, Run for Something, the African American-focused Collective PAC and the millennial-focused New Leaders Council to place fellows with the relevant causes.

“OFA couldn’t be more excited to launch this partnership program and work with these influential organizations to help elevate the next generation of progressive leaders — leaders who reflect the youthful, diverse population at the heart of progressive movement,” said OFA spokesman Jesse Lehrich. “Now is the time to invest in the future, to encourage talented young activists to take the next step and run for office, and to provide them with the training and support necessary to be successful.”

The progressive group’s six-week fellowship program, created by veterans of the Obama campaigns, has become an under-the-radar asset for activists who plunged into politics after the 2016 election. The free program has been turning out organizers for special elections, voter registration and protest campaigns — especially the sustained protests against the Republican effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act. ...

Six months later, OFA has settled into the firmament of the progressive movement — and by connecting other groups to fellows, it’s trying to build a farm team that the Obama-era DNC never could.

OFA targets vulnerable Republicans with new grassroots project

(CNN)As President Donald Trump's policies and rhetoric have put him increasingly at odds with the national Republican party, a leading progressive organization is kicking off a new grassroots campaign to link vulnerable GOP House members to Trump's troubled brand.

Organizing for Action, the group spawned by former President Barack Obama's national campaigns, is beginning the program by focusing on 34 seats in GOP-held congressional districts around the country where Trump received less than 50% of the vote last November.

Sixteen months out from the 2018 midterm elections, organizers say they have already enlisted more than 4,000 volunteers dedicated to building a new activist network. OFA's plan is to enlist and train a small army of hometown organizers to agitate against endangered lawmakers like Rep. Carlos Curbelo of Florida and California Rep. Darrell Issa. Both congressmen voted to pass an unpopular Obamacare repeal bill in the House and are expected to face tough re-election bids next year.

Volunteers, many new to tedious arts of effective phone banking and canvassing, will receive training through the organization. Their energies will then be directed at recruiting friends and neighbors, and building capacity in an effort to pin down the nearly three dozen lawmakers highlighted on an OFA-designed website called "Rubber Stamp Reps." If the designation sticks, they hope it will prove especially damaging in districts where Trump was a divisive figure even before his post-inauguration plummet in the polls.

It's that time of the year again: Applications for OFA's fall Community Engagement Fellowship are now open.

And we're looking for passionate people like you, who are ready to fight for change and take their organizing skills to the next level.

Whether you're new to organizing or just need to brush up on your skills, the Community Engagement Fellowship equips organizers of all levels with the tools and training they need to bring their communities together around critical issues, from climate change to immigration.

Applications are open now. Get started on yours today.

For six weeks, fellows will learn from experienced organizers and trainers through weekly online trainings. They'll do a deep dive into the theory of change behind community organizing, then work side-by-side with experienced community organizers to push for progressive change in their areas.

The last few months have proven what kind of impact we can have when we come together, get trained, and use those organizing skills to effectively push for progress. Becoming a fellow is a great way to get involved and fight for change on issues that matter to you.

Don't wait -- get started on your application now.

Apply

Thanks,

Jennifer

Obama group announces midterms hit list

Organizing for Action, the group formed out of Barack Obama’s old campaign apparatus, is moving more directly into politics than ever before, deploying in 27 House races around the country this year.

Through an existing partnership with the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, OFA will also work in nine states to campaign for ballot initiatives and Democrats running for governor and state legislature positions. The group is pushing for greater Democratic control over redistricting ahead of the 2020 Census.....

The full list of districts includes several where Donald Trump did better than Hillary Clinton. It does not include all the seats held by Republicans in districts where Clinton beat Trump, which Democrats tend to see as their best opportunities for pickups in November.

Here is the full list of districts OFA is targeting:

AZ-02
CA-04
CA-10
CA-21
CA-25
CA-39
CA-45
CA-48
CA-49

IA-01
IL-06
KS-03
MN-02

NC-13
NJ-11

Missouri 2nd is Todd Akins old district. It is most of the white St. Louis County suburbs in the south and west part of St. Louis County, along with a little bit of St. Charles and Jefferson County. If the Dems can win there, then white suburbs anywhere are in play.

CA-04 Tom McClintock

CA-10 Jeff Dunham

CA-21 David Valadao

CA-25 Steve Knight

CA-39 Ed Royce

CA-45 Mimi Walters

CA-48 Dana Rohrabacher

CA-49 Darryl Fucking Issa

Since term limits were installed, some of the former perpetual legislature candidates have gone National. McClintock and Royce, in particular, are reliable anti- environment voters.

This is Claire McCaskill's seat, right? My sister-in-law is campaigning for her.

McCaskill is the Senator (whole state). She is originally from the Jackson County (i.e. Kansas City) Prosecutor's Office.

Ann Wagner is the Representative for the 2nd District. She is a Republican, very pro-business but not overtly crazy.

Issa is not running for re-election. [That was a good news day!]
Rep. Darrell Issa, a California Republican, is among the candidates who have been discussed as President Donald Trump gets closer to naming who will run the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
